Sunday 30th January 2011 - BDFPA West Midlands Divisional

Sorry for the delay in getting this write up done lads, I didn't have time last night as I went out for a meal with Mrs Macca.

Bit of a mixed bag really, for reasons that will become apparent Happy

I'll start with my goals going into this comp - I wanted to use this divisional to see just how much weight I could cut without adversely affecting my performance and obviously I wanted to qualify for the British.

With this is mind I had let my weight creep up to 87.5kg, which is how much I weighed on Saturday morning Grin

So I followed my usual dehydration routine - over hydration for a few days, no carbs the day before the meet, cut out all water 12 hours before weigh in and one hour in a hot bath before bed. I then went to bed in sweats and a jumper and had a surprisingly good night’s sleep.

Weigh in was at 07:30 so I got up at 05:30 to check my weight - 84.5kg Eek A bit of a bugger, but nothing to panic about - So I spend another 45 minutes in a hot bath which takes be down to 83.6 kg, 'Bonza' I think, another 40 mins and I'll be done.
Well in truth, what I was actually thinking was 'f**k, I've got another 45mins of this living hell to go through!'

45 minutes later I was 83.4kg Eek

Time to panic a little now, it's 07:00 and I've still got a kilo to loose and unless I can do it quickly I’ll cutting into my rehydration time........

So I resort to having the bath full, the shower on super hot and jogging on the spot in the bath. I could keep this up for about 5 minutes before I had to collapse on the toilet, wrapped in towels trying not to pass out.

This god awful situation went on for one hour and ten minutes before I finally broke, I got on the scales and I was 82.8kg but I had to get to the venue to weigh in. So I got togged up, checked out of the hotel an drove to the meet - I'm now wearing everything I own so I was still sweating and hoping that the last few hundred grams would come off.

I weighed in at 08:40 at exactly 82.5kg, but I now only had an hour and a half before my flight was due to start squatting Eek

I got on with rehydrating and recarbing (water, isotonic drinks, maltodextrin, Dioralyte, potassium tabs), but I felt like death for at least an hour.
I didn't feel much better by the time I started to warm up for squats (about one hour ten minutes after weigh in) and I was constantly fighting my calves, lats and traps cramping Unhappy

Squats
  • Attempt 1 - 230kg - Good Lift

As I unracked the bar both of my calves cramped and cramped hard! I tried not to panic and get set up properly and then my lats started to cramp Unhappy - I just sank the squat and got it over as quickly as I could, it was actually a really fast rep but it felt horrendous!

  • Attempt 2 - Passed
  • Attempt 3 - Passed

I now had about an hour before I needed to warm up for bench - more water, salts and potassium were nailed.

Bench warmup was ok - my hands were cramping when squeezing the bar but I could deal with that

Bench
  • Attempt 1 - 140kg - Good Lift

    No drama here thank god!

  • Attempt 2 - 150kg PB

My lower back cramped up as I took my arch (which limited my leg drive), but I got the bas***d up and finally nailed a 150kg bench in comp!

  • Attempt 3 - 152.5kg

This was never going to happen as soon as I started to set up - My calves, outer thighs, lower back and lats all cramped just getting set up Unhappy I tried to press it anyway but only got it a few inches from my chest

Again I had about an hour before I had to warmup for deadlifts.

Warmup was ok, my quads tried to cramp up once or twice, but I managed to stretch and roll them out which seemed to keep the cramp at bay

Deadlifts
  • Attempt 1 - 230kg (Hook Grip) - Good Lift

    Easy

  • Attempt 2 - 260kg (Hook Grip) - PB - Good Lift

Easy rep, the hook was solid!

  • Attempt 3 - 270kg (Hook Grip) - No Lift

As I was setting up, my quads started to cramp up Unhappy I shook it out and locked onto the bar but as soon as I tried to drive they cramped again. The result was I has to let my hips shoot and attempt to stiff leg it.
I got it well past my knees and was determined to finish the lift (even if I had to hitch it) but I felt a sharp pain in my stomach so I dropped it like it was hot. I quickly realised that all that had happened was my belt had slipped and pinched my belly, so no damage done Happy

640kg Total

Hard to say I really enjoyed today as for most of it I felt like death. I think the only part of my body that didn't cramp up was my cock Grin

However there are some real positives to take out of today

  • I now know my limits for safely dehydrating weight off
  • I can still squat with most of my body cramped up Happy
  • I snagged bench and deadlift PB's Cool
  • I only just missed a 270kg deadlift
  • I'm not injured Happy - In fact the only parts of my that are sore are my outer thighs from when the cramped up on the bench
  • Cramp is not my friend.
  • The HOOK is Strong!

Just a quick word about the comp itself - I have to say that it's one of the best I've ever been to.
The venue (Fitness Factory in Coventry) was the most awesome gym I've had to pleasure to visit. Every piece of equipment was of competition standard and every bar was an Ivanko (I think I counted ten in all)

Add to that a well run comp with a great atmosphere and you can't go far wrong.

Here's the Macca Cam Production - It was being operated my Papa Mac who was also shooting still photos, as a result he missed my squat and first bench press Roll-Eyes

All things considered thats a bloody excellent day Macca! Good job a 230kg squat is such a walk in the park for you on a good day.

Now you managed to PB twice on a day when you were miles from optimal its going to be interesting to see what you can manage on a good day!

Crazy dehydration process mate! What's the plan then Macca, try and lose a few kgs or go up to 90s and watch that squat fly though the roof?
