In this case, I think multiple doubles at 85% would be enough to push Wayne to a new PB. Whether or not you decide to call that a strength gain is up to you. It will certainly build strength endurance. I suspect the ability is already there and just needs unlocking, as it were. The volume will harden and condition his back and the weight should be low enough for him to focus on performing the movement explosively, without it being too light. As he's already identified, the back gets a lot of work elsewhere. What makes all the difference in the deadlift itself is learning to pull in an explosive, but controlled manner, whilst accelerating all the way through (actual speed of movement may slow).

Would you mind elaborating? I know what I mean, but I'm struggling to elaborate! What I'm trying to say is - my back is primarily a vital part of my body that I need in working order for everyday life. Car lifting etc is a secondary function! A bit of care should be exercised with regard to back training. Striving for speedy results with a vulnerable structure like the human back could potentially be very harmful. Develop slowly! Sorry - that's a crap reply I've given you!

Sorry - that's a crap reply I've given you! But I'm suggesting working at around 85% to improve, instead of your typical 95%+. All you need to do is work on some explosive doubles or triples once a week, instead of a heavy grinder. I think your back will probably thank you for it. As usual though, I'm sure you know best.

Still got a little bit of strength Member 400, 22054 posts | I do power cleans for explosion. Col_Austin said: As usual though, I'm sure you know best. I'm experienced enough to know how my body reacts to training. I've done rep work (and even bicep curls ) in the past. I've found what works for me. As I've said before - I'm progressing (at a rate I'm happy with) and I'm managing to avoid injury. I'm happy with that. I know you're a BIG puller, and the things you're saying are valid. I'm sure you'll agree though that different things work for different people.

left the country satisfied Member 10, 19241 posts SQ 240, BP 150, DL 270660.0 kgs @ 107kgs UnEq | its just a "thing", neutral I am more worried that col bothered to dig up your pic, unless he already had it saved on his hard drive... for what its worth, i agree about waynes point about not striving to beast the back - some people prefer it that way and it suits them. but, i dont agree that you cant build up your work capacity. If you trained with a crew like ours you would end up doing it just because of training with guys who are on a higher level, which is a good thing. Anyway, col, cheers for the tips and explanation, i will try to take some of that in and build up my dead, even if wayne wont give it a go

power by name , power by nature ! Member 439, 217 posts | I am not a strongman but i train my lower back twice a week,it varys but will often be a good morning type exercise on one sesion, then some kind of deadlift on the other ,normaly after some max effort squat movement (again it varys) so I think your back could cope with what Col Austin sugested. I do a manual job as well, If I am honest I think your back would benefit from a greater workload {rep wise} I pulled a 307.5 at 90kg a couple of weeks ago in a comp. (not limit)and my deadlift seems to be improving (I am in my forties now)

If I decide to have a stint of focusing on dead lifts then I'll look at upping the volume and getting some more reps in, etc. At the moment it's not one of my top priorities and I'm just letting it tick over.
