lol. i know what you mean! and we couldn't really be much further apart. we just need to find a 4th person in Biarritz and we've got the whole country covered!

Neil, I'm thinking exactly like you. I want to do a comp over here but I'm struggling to find one and how to get involved. I've found a forum but there doesn't seem to be much activity, and on the official site I found, there are no comps listed;

I'm going to keep searching and if i find a local level one we could give it a shot.

neil, have a look at this.

http://www.fsfa.fr/

They have some stuff on the calendar but it is all quarter finals, semi-finals etc. I have no idea how to qualify for all this. I'll shoot a few mails off and see if i can find out more.

Also, look at the "minimas" from what i can gather from a couple of forum posts, the level below qulifies you for the level above. So if you hit the regional level it is good enough to compete at the next level. At your weight your totals lok pretty competitive.

Anyway, something to look into.

Cheers for all the info, if you do find out anything from them let me know as I would be interested in at least attending an event even if I don't lift in it.

I haven't updated my log because I've got the cold from hell at the moment and feeling pretty sorry for myself because of it.

Monday 8th October

Squat: 50 x 6, 90 x 5,5, 130 x 5, 90 x 5,5.
PP+PC: 50 x 5,5, 70 x 3,3,3.
reverse grip pull-ups: BW x 8,8,8.

Just a nice gentle get back into it. Still suffering a little breathing wise on the arse end of this damn cold I've had now over a week! Feeling pretty weak tbh.

Inspired by Titch's journal post here, I've decided to add some structure to my own training because I've lost my way a little I think!

Please could you cast a glance over this and let me know what you think.

Monday
Squat
SLDL
Hamstring curls
Weighted hanging leg raises

Wednesday
Bench
CG bench
PC+PP
Tricep pushdowns

Friday
Deadlfts
Widegrip pullups
BB rows
TP curls

In terms of volume and weight% I will be looking to do the same as Titch i.e.

Squat, Bench, Deadlift
Week 1: 70%, 5 sets of triples
Week 2: 80%, 5 sets of doubles
Week 3: 90%, 5 sets of singles
Week 4: De-load

All the other stuff 5 sets of 8.

I will base my 1RM calculations on Squat 170, Bench 110, DL 210. That gives me reasonable figures to work with; Squat 120, 136, 150; Bench 80, 90, 100; DL 150, 170, 190.

After those 4 weeks I'll see where I'm at!

What you reckon?

Both the routine and progression are solid - the only thing I would bear in mind is that (in my opinion!!) 70/80/90 type progression is more suited to people like Iain who are more advanced. If he goes and does 5 singles with 90% of his deadlift or bench 1RM then it will more out of him than if you did the same.

What I'm basically trying to say is that as you aren't as advanced you may find you can push harder than those percentages, so something worth bearing in mind at least.

OK cheers Rob, makes sense. When I worked them out I did think to myself that it was going to be relatively trouble free to do them. Might up things by a few kgs here and there to present myself with more of a challenge then.

Yeah so I'm starting week 1 next week and I'm upping things to Squat: 140, 150, 160, Bench: 95,100,105, Dead: 170, 185, 200, for week 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

Wednesday 10th October

Bench: 50 x 6, 70 x 5, 80 x 5, 90 x 5,5,5.
CG bench: 70 x 5,5,5.
pushdowns: 30 x 8,8,8.

Just a little workout there to prepare myself for Saturday and beginning my new routine next week. Having said that those 90s were tough. I've lost 2kg bodyweight cos of this cold and perhaps because I'm playing quite a bit of footy now, twice per week training and a match most Sundays. Going to have to really work at making sure I eat enough.

Solid routine but I also agree with Rob. The % based training that both Titch and I are doing is partly based on the fact that we are both a bit burned out and need to de-load and work back into harder full bore training.

That's not to say it won't be good for you, but don't be tied down to a set weight just because one month ago that's what your wrote down. I think this is the problem with strict % based, linear progression. The body dose not work like that, and you may have down a date to take some pb's or high load but you may just not be up for it. The advantage of it is that you clearly undulate the load volume of work.

I suggest to do one cycle based on % as laid out with some good assistance work then see where you are after 3 weeks. You may not need a de-load? You may decide to go back to 70% and add 5kg? Either way you'll contiune to learn how to train yourself and what works. Which by the way, with your recent pb's, you seem to be doing pretty well!!

As I suggested to Titch box clever!

Thanks for the advice Iain. I'll stick with that routine and set/rep progression but when it comes to the weights I use I'll see how frisky I'm feeling. And as you say, I may just drop the deload if I don't feel worn out. It's just that with starting footy for the local team and having this cold from hell I guess I was beginning to feel a bit beat up. However, now the cold is mostly gone I find myself feeling OK again so I'll see where it takes me.

Hope everyone had a better day than me!

Saturday 13 October - Sugden barbell PB challenge

Squat: 50 x 5, 90 x 2, 130 x 1, 150 x 1, 170 x 0 (see vid).
Bench: 50 x 3, 70 x 1, 90 x 1, 105 x 0, 105 x 1 (see vid).
PC: 50 x 2, 70 x 1, 90 x 0, 90 x 0, 90 x 1 (see vid).

Squat 170kg fail

Bench 105kg

Ugly 90kg Powerclean

Conclusion
Squat: 150 went up a piece of piss, but I was feeling a little fatigued in the legs. Just watch me get crushed by the 170.

Bench: first attempt at 105 I paused for a longish time and then it went up a fraction and stalled. Next 105 was just a touch and go, and it was f**king touch and go whether it was going to make it as you can see... but at least today one of my lifts was a PB!

PC: rubbish, I've repped 90 for 3 before today! Wanted to get 100 but only just managed a down and dirty 90k on the 3rd attempt. My first attempt at 90 I even managed to ding my left knee cap ffs!

Either it's too much footy (3 times per week) or I just had a bad day. Dunno! One thing's for sure, no more PB attempts on anything else until I have put in the hours of steady training required to make progress! Disappointing, but at least I managed the bench PB.

Godd effort mate, that 105 bench was a real grinder. Dont worry bout the failed lifts, all you need is some burly fat men shouting at you.

Yea solid effort mate - after flu and loads of footy you did well considering you were on your own. Atmosphere makes such a difference when you're going for big lifts. Keep at it sure we'll be seeing some nice PBs soon!
