Wednesday 13th June

Very slow 5km jog today. Beginning to realise that PL and running are incompatible. After my heavy deadlifts yesterday my back is still tender today and while running became quite sore. s**t.

I think they are compatible to an extent but it takes you a long time to get your body used to it. One guy at Sugden will often sq/dl upto four times a week and do seriously hard paced running a similar amount of times if not more.

Got any idea how long? I've been doing the running seriously since 3months and today I just found that my back felt damn sore. Now maybe I'm just a big wuss or maybe my back was about to snap, dunno, but I do hope one day that I'll be able to do both comfortably.

TBH I've found so far that I've been able to make strides in the weights but my running has fallen off badly. I'm lifting heavier and getting heavier (I've put on 2kilos in the past 1.5months) but my running has been getting slower and more painful.

This isn't from personal experience, but just what others have told me, and it would be months at least.

Ant's not human, though. As Rob says, he trains hard virtually every day, squats or deads or hack squats sometimes four or five days in a row (heavy), monstrously long sessions including seriously fast running for 12 minutes and 30 minutes of hard cross-trainer or rowing. Which is why he gets through 8,000kcal/day or so and is still ripped to the bone...

Ah I see. Unfortunately I am still mostly human, being only 1/10 animal Happy

I'll stick with it and see how it goes but at the moment it's looking like PL is winning over running and if I had to drop one it would be the running. Hopefully won't have to though.

Thursday 14th June

Bench: 51 x 6, 61 x 5, 85 x 5 x 5. 4mins rest between.
Dips: BW+9 x 3 x 8. 2mins rest between.
DB oh press: 21 x 3 x 8. 3mins rest between.
push downs: 26 x 3 x 8. 2mins rest between.

Week on week I am making progress (and PBs!) on the bench. Just 2 or 3 weeks ago I put a video up of barely pushing out 3 x 85kg and now I am doing 5 x 5 and marking myself down for 86 next week. Pretty happy about it obviously.

Friday 15th June

12" botty squats: 71 x 6, 91 x 5, 121 x 4 x 5. 4mins rest between.
Leg curl: 50 x 3 x 8. 3mins rest between and supersetted with both below.
Calf raises: 121 x 3 x 8.
Hanging leg raises: 16 x 3 x 8.

I was meant to go running today but it was raining so I pushed my squat day forward one. Despite my back still being a little tender I managed a reasonable 4 sets of 5 at 121kg. Body was upright and the botty touched the box each time. All good.

Saturday 16th June

Another miserable 5km jog/hobble. I've decided to restrict my running to one 10km run per week to see if this helps. I just might be overdoing it by trying to run 3times/week along with the 4times/week weights routine. bo***cks.

On the positive side, it'll give me more free time Happy

If your not all ready you could try creatine? It helps my recovery rate, i'v heard of runners using it too.

Just to add to this, if you are going to buy creatine make sure you buy ethyl ester. Its much more affective than the other forms.

LOL! Nope, tbench said it. As opposed to box squats where you can actually sit on the box and let it take the weight, these are made up of a 12" high set of palets that I simply touch the 'botty' on, hence botty squats rather than box squats. Blame boar for the rather gay terminology heh. Check out this video for a look at what I mean - last set of 121kg so they're a little ropey. I'm just trying to make sure that I go low enough each time.

Thanks for the advice. I don't know what's going on with my running. It could simply be that after heavy (for me!) deads and squats I am just not able to perform running properly. Whatever it is it's not affecting my weights at all. I'm making progress week on week with that. I've got a 10km race next Sunday so I'm thinking of giving myself a break for one week. I haven't had a break for months, so I could probably do with one.

As for supplements, I take glucosamine daily because I figure my joints could do with it. Apart from that nothing. I have got some creatine monohydrate, but tbh I haven't noticed any difference between that and simply eating like a horse. Perhaps I'll give it another go. I must have the best part of 3 months' worth in a bottle somewhere.

Sunday 17th June

Bench: 51 x 6, 71 x 5, 92 x 5 x 3. 4mins rest between.

This is my extra weekly bench session and I'm pretty happy with that. I think I'm simply going to keep adding 1kg per week until I don't push out all 5 sets of 3.
