World record breakers meet Finland

Competition write up

30th July

Didn't make the best start to the trip, missed boarding our flights at Manchester by 10 minutes so had to fork out £800 for a later flight! Meant we actually arrived in Helsinki earlier than planned and were greeted at the airport by Peter(big bald Finnish guy) and the German competitor, Mirko.

We then had a 1hr 30m drive to the venue to weigh in. By the time we'd chatted there I finally got on the scales at around 1am and came in at 98kgs fully clothed and in my shoes. I was a bit puzzled to say the least. By the time we'd been to an obscure Finnish takeaway for some food we finally hit the hotel at around 2am.

31st July

Woke up early feeling really tired and hit the restaurant for some breakfast. This was the first time laying my eyes on the competition, some really big guys there. Watched the Ukrainian guy tuck away 5 plates of food whilst I struggled through some porridge.

Spent the rest of the day sleeping then was picked up in a limo to go to the venue at 3pm. Quick competitors meeting then some time to get to grips with the equipment. This is where things started to go wrong, tweaked my left bi messing around with the sacks and the tyre had to be lifted half way up the tread as you couldn't get your hands under it. Felt quite tired and empty.

Medley, 2x100kg sack load, 120m farmers x 15m, 2x350kg tyre flip.
Sacks and farmers went up fairly easily although a bit slower than I was expecting. Had no technique with the tyre and ended up just wrestling it over for two flips. 63.7 seconds left me in 14th place.

Max log
Opened on 110 which went up no problem.
Took 120 for second lift ad wrestled it up, thought I'd locked it but was given a no lift, made a quick attempt to split jerk it but it was never going to go.
Second crack at 120 wasn't any better, clean flew up but my head went and had to bin it. Cleaned it again but ny now as finished. Ended on 110 which was 12th place

Farmers Walk, 120kg for 70 meters
Managed 46.43 seconds, grip felt ok just had nothing in my legs. Finished 15th and by this point was thoroughly disgusted with my self.

Last event of the day Truck pull for 15m
Managed it in 30.11s for 13th place. Technique just went to s**t.

Another long day and by the time we'd had some food it was midnight before we hit the hotel.

1st August
Another poor nights sleep didn't fill me full of confidence for today, especially as there were some bad events for me.

Straight back to bed after breakfast then on to the comp at 3pm again.

370kg car carry
f**king joy, I hate yoking so didn't expect this to be much fun. Managed to get the thing just over a meter by picking it up several times then falling forward. After 4 or 5 pick ups I accepted defeat. Finished 15th.

Deadlift 332.5kg for reps
Was a disaster ,never made a rep, then again neither did over half of the field. Just wanted to get this over with now.

300kg conans wheel
Had ever done this event so it was a bit of a wild card. Managed to get the thing three quarters of the way round. Good enough for 13th place. Hammered my already sore biceps which were in agony even after taking 120mg of coedine!

Atlas stones
Didn't see this going well as gripping the stones was going to be near on impossible. Was right as well, only managed 3 stones and could barely get the 160 off the floor. Finished in 12th place and was glad that the whole thing was over.

Had some food in the venue then is was back in the limo to go to the hotel.

After show party was a bit of a damp squib for me as I was pretty ashamed with my self. The Ukrainian winner had brought along a good bottle of Ukrainian Vodka so the highlight of the whole trip for me was probably standing in some seedy Finnish hotel car park drinking neat vodka with the newly crowned World Record Breakers Challenge Champion!

Learnt some important lessons and saw some performances that I didn't think were possible at under 105kg strongman.

I'll be back bigger, stronger and fitter next year.

Video of the event

cracking effort at the comp, nothing to be ashamed of there mate. looks like a solid plan. will you be fit for october?? Wink

Will I didn't produce what I know I can which is where the feeling of disgust/shame comes from. Think every guy on this site judges himself in the same way.

Setting no timescale on returning to full fitness Will, not going to rush anything.

fair play mate. I hope you can make it.

solid writeup + vid.
