Careful if you try i seen a lot of torn pecs and shredded shoulders as people try go to wide to quick, finger width by finger width seems the best way Happy

Seems a smart idea. Because of shoulder issues I'm not to sure if I personally would give it a go. If I ever do, I'll take that advice.

I have had a pec/shoulder issue for almost 2 years now and during this time I have rarely been able to bench for any particular amount of time before things start to hurt. Though its only been 2 sessions, I am so far very pleased with how wide grip feels. It is infinitely more comfortable on my pecs and shoulders than any other grip. I have quite a tight arch and can engage my lats properly on both sides (which i cant do with a closer grip). I also "pull the bar apart" so it engages a lot of harry tricep and it really is feeling awesome. So far. Il probably be injured by the end of the week anyway.

This is good news.

I enjoy being someone who doesn't bench.

close grip bench

bar
40
50
60

70kg x 6 x 5 or something

deadlift

bar
70
120
155

Then I did some pull downs, upper back and kettlebell windmils. I absolutely love kettlebell windmills.

squat

bar
60

100kg x 5
120kg x 4
140kg x 3

145kg x 3 x 5 - all fantastic

Then I did some other stuff including bulgarian split squats and more kettlebell windmils. During the latter of those I had a very scary twinge in my lower back which seems to have not given me any particular problems since. I pounded 800mg of ibuprofen afterwards to kill off any inflamation that it left me with, so far so good. A valuable lesson has been learnt though. After some research I have realised that I was actually doing the exercise slightly wrong. Needless to say, I will do it correctly from now on.

At the gym at opening time

Close grip bench (using a grip that Rob taught me)

Bar
40
50
60

70kg x 7 x 4

Deadlift (hook grip)

Bar
70
120
150
165

175kg x 3 x 4

No time for anything else. All rest periods were timed and no longer than about 3.5 minutes.

Bench all went really well and deadlift was acceptable but not great. Hook grip with an IPF bar feels horrible, plus the technique im using now is really hard off the floor. I feel great now though.

bar
40

70kg x 8 x 4

deadlift (hook grip)

bar
70
120
140
155

170kg x 3
180kg x 2
190kg x 2
170kg x 4 x 3 - straps

Then some rows and stuff.

Heres a thing that I'm about to start writing and it may be a long paragraph and not that interesting, but perhaps interesting to other people who like to deadlift. Ready? ok here we go. Today I experimented with deadlifting slightly differently. I used to be really good at deadlifting a few years ago, and I used to deadlift semi sumo with quite a rounded upper back and high hips. This method worked very well with an eleiko bar, it just worked really well. A few years ago I went through a period of time where for ages I could only use bendier bars and I kind of gravitated towards widening my stance a little bit and straightening my back, just like how a proper sumo deadlift should be done. Well try doing this on a stiff eleiko bar and instantly take 100kg off your deadlift. Its just so hard off the floor. Well anyway today I didnt do that. I used my recent slightly wider stance and kept my lower back as straight as possible but properly rounded my upper back and the weight moved pretty well. I think if the rounding of the upper back can take the same amount of ROM from the hips that deadlifting with a bendy bar does then Im in business, though this comes at the expense of the bar drifting out infront of me which I will work on.

In other news, in one month I will compete for the first time in 2 and a half years.
