I've knocked up a couple of sandbags and had a play with the lighter one today.

75kg sandbag, floor to left shoulder 4 sets of 3.

These had me blowing. Not doing too much this week as I want to fresh on Sunday. I will attempt the 105kg sandbag afer the comp'.

i knocked a sandbag up yesterday using an old army duffel bag sand and burying several 5kg standard plates in it, are you using the same technique as on wills vid?

Yeah, I think that Will's technique is spot on, it worked well enough on the 75kg bag but I know the 105kg is going to be a real struggle - looking forward to it though!

For me sandbag training as neanderthal as it is got me in probably my best shape ever. I did the 50/20 thing. 50 reps in under 20 minutes shouldering a 90k sandbag. after 3 months i worked up to 55 reps in 19.58 minutes in sets of 5's, 3's, 2's singles. A puke fest but still the greatest strength/endurance feat i've ever done. Felt strong as a bull and fit as f**k!

I snapped a tendon on my middle finger shouldering a 136k bag. That sadly put paid to the bag training and i drifted back to the barbell.

I still look back fondly on those days of back yard torture

Thats some great work there Mac. I like the idea of increasing the reps within the allotted time, might have to give that a go.

Joni - cheers!

13th Sept 2009

WDFPA World Single Lift championships (Bradford)

Up at 5am for a 7am weigh in, skipped breakfast and brew to weigh in at 99.5kg, didn't need to do any water manipulation having steadily lost a couple of kg over the last few weeks.

The registration and weigh in was a smooth process and lifting started about 9am and ran pretty well.

I lifted around 1pm after watching my pal Colin Harrison (Spam on here) have a great comp and pull 275kg at well under 90kg.

I had put in an opener of 280kg but there wasn't anyone really near me in the 100s so based on warm-ups dropped it to 270kg, I was really struggling to get going, felt flat with no buzz at all.

270kg went up okay but form was like a stiff leg dead apparently and it felt heavy!

went to 285kg which I was confident would win me the class and set me up for a PB attempt on my 3rd lift.

285kg went up but it was a grind!

292.5kg for a PB came a few inches off the floor but wasn't there today.

I had hoped for a lot more - a PB then a World record attempt at 303kg but that now looks a long way off. I obviously need a longer build-up with some spefcific assistance work etc to progress rather than a bit of deadlifting for 3 or 4 weeks!

So overall I have come away as a World Champ of some description but also dissapointed and a bit low. I certainly wont be doing this type of comp again, sitting around all day to do a lift that would give as much satisfaction in the gym to get a trophy the same as the guy who came 6th in the class and paying £50 for the priveledge (plus £50 for a team tracksuit that didn't arrive in time for the comp!). Colin came 3rd overall and got nothing for that either.

well done mate, some great lifts there. £50 does seem a bit steep for 3 deadlifts!

Good going Ben..World Champ has a nice ring however you got there...! Would you recommend lifting with the BDFPA? I'm thinking of lifting with them next year (especially since the qualifying for the unequipped British is only 585!!Happy )
