With known drug cheats returning from bans and going on to set new personal bests, I wondered how much of an advatage drugs give. I've seen individuals make huge gains when they first start taking banned drugs, but wondered just how much diference they make at to the elite performer at International level

If an athlete is able to improve on their drug assisted performances after a ban either

1. Drugs don't work
2. They are still taking them
3. ...?

obviously they are still taking, or taking something different

this bothers me, the number of tv pundits saying Dwain didn't need to take drugs as he is running as fast(ish) now is mental

3. They got enough of an advantage when on and caught to come back better than they would have if they'd stayed clean

I suppose it depends on the drug. Substances like stimulants seem to make you stronger just because you have the substance inside you.

Something like HGH will not make you stronger, but may improve the quality of your training due to improved recovery, and long term may allow you to become stronger than you would have without it.

Testosterone I would imagine, makes you stronger and also improves the quality of your training. When you stop, you lose the testosterone strength, but keep the training benefit. Is the strength gain from testosterone though, a direct result of the hormone, or a result of the increased bodyweight?

I don't doubt at all that it is possible to get stronger after stopping the use of drugs. Why wouldn't it be? It would just take a bit longer, surely?

If this is this case then it would suggest the length of bans is too short.

Well it's an impossible one to judge. If someone takes a banned substance you would presume it would in a set amount of time, make them better than they would of been without it. Otherwise why take it. But there's no way of knowing how much. The physiological edge knowing they were on and needed to reap th rewards may be more of an advantage than the actual gear say. But it impossible to know

If taking something speeds up your development by say 1year. As in it would take me 2 years to pull 260. But if I took test it would only take 1. I got caught. Served my time and returned. I'm still 1 year ahead of where I would of been. This leads me to think I'd prefer a lifetime ban

But then I think it's a silly idea

During a ban you would think someone would still train hard for they're return and they would always have that advantage of when they were on

Should a punishment be an equal inhibiting factor. You get caught with test, result is you have to take oestrogen to undo all the test work

Depends. How do you treat the no drugs rule? Does it mean (personally, to you? the individual lifter? the country?) that you absolutely must never take any banned substance, or does it mean you have a certain threshold at piss in a jar time, make sure you're not over it?

If someone has taken drugs in the past, outside of any participation in the sport, should they not be allowed to join a drug tested sport? They never broke any rules within the sport because they weren't participating at the time, and it would seem unfair to me to build a time machine in order to test lifters before they started lifting in a tested federation?

Here's an example, without mentioning any names as I wouldn't want to over step my mark and discuss someones personal habits, but it's not exactly a secret anyway...

A lifter from this forum made it known that he was considering joining the GBPF. In the past, this lifter would not have been elligable to lift in the GBPF for whatever reason. He has made no attempt whatsoever to decieve anyone, and no attempt to cheat in the sport. He had gone to lengths to 'set things right' so he could lift fairly in the GBPF.

WHY do I get the distinct impression that he would have been made far more unwelcome than another GBPF lifter who occasionally posts here, who had in fact been caught and banned cheating, served his time and is now a forgiven member of the happy family again?

Absolutely ludicrous! LOL

For one, it really wouldn't work that way anyway. Increased estrogen levels is a BENEFICIAL side effect in terms of strength gains from taking test. More water retention? f**king fantastic.

And for two, why is this s**t banned in the first place? Because it's a 'health risk' and it's not fair to let someone win because he was willing to take more of a health risk than someone else. If you are to believe increasing test levels is a health risk, then you sure as f**k had better believe artifically increasing estrogen levels is as much of a health risk.
