sorry for how vague this is but at the Sydney Olympics some university did an anonymous poll at the athletes village, asking if they could give the athlete a drug right now, that was completely undetectable, but would guarantee them gold in their event, BUT they would be dead 1 year later, would they take it? Something like over 60% said yes
again, just from memory at the time

Lol, thats f**king crazy!

If you said the same to me re a WSM win, and extended it to 5 years of life, I'd be saying "f**k NO!"

I used to follow BB quite closely, and there were MUCH more health problems than just Flex Wheelers kineys
dead/dying bodybuilders were common news

Agreed - when testing was brought in it was to protect athletes. Before it people had died through drug use. It shouldn't be a case of the person willing to take the biggest risk coming out on top.

In my opinion, it's not protected athletes, it's probably just pushed them into more risky doping protocols in order to get around the rule.

People will do what they will do. I don't personally get why it should matter what path someone takes to get to their goals. If someone outlifts me I don't say 'well could he have done that without drugs, could I do what he did with drugs?'. The simple fact of the matter is you got beat at the very thing you were contesting, by someone who was more willing to do what it took to reach his level of success.

We're not trying to contest who has the best training methods, who's diet allows them to make the best improvements, who's willing to take on a s**tty underpaying job so he has more time to train, who's willing to sacrifice his social life the most etc etc. We're f**king lifting weights, and whoever lifts the most weight is the winner! It's complicated too much already with weight classes, why impose more restrictions? There's plenty of other stuff going on in an elite lifters day to day habbits that are AT LEAST as detremental to his well being physically and mentally, as drugs are.

off the top of my head

Don youngblood, won the masters olympia after a few attempts, popped his cloggs

Orvyle Burke, massive guy, sudden brain thing, either a vegetable or dead

Mike Materazzi or whatever his name is, MASSIVE calves, heart attack, don't know if he died, but not good

I was talking more mainstream...the Top 20-30 Olympia/Arnolds etc guys will be having regular blood work....which makes the chances of gear related health problems minimal IMO

all 3 were oylimpia competitors

youngblood was actually a self made millionare, who only started competing in his 40s, died at 51

Matarazzos last comp was the 2001 Olympia, where he came 21st

Orville Burke was at the 2002 Olympia

A sedentary lifestyle with no eye on fitness training is more of a loaded gun that PED's aimed at helping a person hit targets taken sensibly. Drink enough water and it'll kill you.

Lets answer the original post: yes. Did op want a pro/against PED debate? Maybe...

On a slightly different subject some may argue that PED use might be considered fair to address the deficiency in a persons genetic makeup/potential which as mentioned in another thread is measurable...

Who is to say if PEDs were the cause though? Legendary natural bodybuilder Mike Williams passed away from a heart attack on the way out of the gym at just 50. Mattarzzo didn't die btw, I read an interview after his problems and the thing he blamed/regretted was the huge quantities of red meat he ate.

No Masters Olympia....Coleman won in 2002...therefore not one of the "mainstream guys"

As I said, with regular GP visits, any negative side effect can de bnipped in the bud/usage stopped

Really? I would have thought that NHS GP's would have taken a pretty dim view on PED use and be reluctant to encourage / help users.

Don Youngblood won the Masters Olypia in 2002, but came 25th at the normal Olympia the same year

the other 2 were normal Olypia too

these were VERY well known guys at the time

you could indeed be correct, but I've seen other interviews where Mike blames the gear
