Thank you very much guys. Who would have thought a 100 kilo deadlift would spark such attention? Tonight's session was back to what I'm relatively good at - benching. Went up to Catts tonight.

I warmed up to 118 for 3, then did three or four sets around the 110ish mark to keep warm while Joey and Wayne did their shirt stuff first. Then I put on my new 46 and did some board work. I should point out that I have no intention of touching in the gym in this shirt. I want to keep it for comps. All my weights are 2 kilos lighter than I thought they were (no big deal) because I found out afterwards we had been using an 18 kilo bar. Lovely feel to it though! Tonight's lifting...

178 x 1 (4.5 inch board)
188 x 1 (4.5 inch board)
188 x 1 (2.5 inch board)
198 x 1 (4.5 inch board)
198 x 1 (2.5 inch board)

Shirt off and...

148 x 1
138 x 2
128 x 3
118 x 4 (all long pauses on 118s)

That was it. Reflections? Not much volume tonight, but some good top end work. I really, really felt the benefit of the bands tonight. I'm used to the heavy weight at full extension, the technique was spot on, breathing was perfect, zero panic, and every rep was a good 'un. If I'm throwing up 200 off a 2.5 board, I can't see 191 getting the better of me in Solihull when I'm psyched up and at the end of a peaking cycle.

Thanks lads. Felt really strong tonight. Makes a pleasant change. Would like to train at Catts more often, but it's 2.5 gallons of petrol there and back, which can quickly get very pricey. Nice to go now and then to keep in touch, though. And Widnes is fine for training. Only problem there is only one decent bench, which sometimes gets used for dumbell curls!

With your various problems (back, knee, etc.) do you think you get less in the 'leg drive' department than others who are 'stronger' in the legs and back? I suppose I'm saying, now that you've started on your road to deadlifting glory do you think you'll get some benefit back into your bench? Great training btw!

Thanks Neil. My main problem is I can't put my feet where I want them to be because of the lack of knee flexion and deadlifting isn't going to change that unfortunately. I think the variation will do me good mentally, and hopefully the overhead presses will make my shoulders stronger, but at the risk of being boring the reason I was able to lock out that 188 really fast (and did the stuff that wasn't videoed) is bands.
