Just back after two weeks away. Quick update

Thursday 24th - Bench - warm up then 140 x 5 x 4, then 140 x 4. Deads tickover up to 140.

Monday 27th - Bench - warm up, singles with 130, 140, 150, needed touch on 160, slightly worrying.

WDFPA Raw Bench, Sat 2nd

Warmed up to a pair with 140. Felt heavy, but it sometimes does in the warm up, then

152.5 - fail
152.5 - fail
152.5 - pass, just!

Those who drop in here from time to time will be as totally confused as I was. Came third in masters 3, first time I've ever been beaten when not injured. Winner got 162.5 at a lighter bodyweight, would have needed 165 to win.

Equipped Bench, 2 hours later

Hardly any warm up, just shirt on and 160 for 2 (no touch) and 170 for 1 (Nearly touched). Planned to open 192.5 but dropped it 10 after the earlier experience.

182.5 - fail
182.5 - pass, just
197.5 - failed.

Won M3 title, 4th on platform.

Changed shirt for third lift and nearly got it to be fair, stalled 2/3 of the way up.

Raw Deadlifts, Sunday 3rd

170 - pass
192.5 - pass (pb)
200 - fail, couldn't get it moving.

Won M3 title, 3rd or 4th on platform, not sure.

Equipped deadlifts, an hour or so later. Never been in a deadlift suit before.

180 - pass, not really ready, no belt on, was told there was a 10 minute gap between flights, then my name was announced as I blithely listened to ipod full blast and had to rush on to beat the clock.
195 - fail, didn't listen to Marc's advice on breathing, did the exact opposite tbh!
197.5 - this would have taken the lead on the platform, but it felt nailed to the floor. Tbh I don't think I could have done 150 by this stage.

Won M3 title, second on platform.

Reflections. The usual WDFPF overseas organised chaos. Each time I go I swear it's my last but I keep going back for more! I reckon I was about 6% down strengthwise, Problems included taking the holiday before the comp rather than after it, eating s**te for a week beforehand (you are what you eat?!), hot climate, having to take off weight both mornings, only reweighed at 9.25 both days, bit of personal stress on a couple of the days leading up to it.

Embrarrassingly crappy medals, most of the entry fee was spent on a top grade bench, bar and Eleiko plates. Great for Maltese, but the people that paid for them will never see them again. Lots of complaints especially from Italians, some of whom behaved very badly at the presentation.

The bench was held outside on the balcony, which sloped for drainage purposes, as balconies do! So I suppose it was really the slightly inclined bench press that I competed in. Still, came back with friendships made or renewed, 3 M3 titles, and a deadlift pb.

EPF Bench Masters in France in 3 weeks. If 152.5 feels light tomorrow I'll know I'm back on the right track. Otherwise, oh s**t...

Thanks guys - and it was the Europeans mate. Titles feel good, gutted to lift so little and not win raw bench, so mixed feelings.

First bench session back.

Bar for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 4
120 for 3
130 for 1
140 for 1
150 for 1
160 - fail
152.5 for 1
130 for 5 x 3 sets.

Definitely lost 5 - 10 Kg off my raw bench overnight. Gutted. All shirted between now and Luxembourg in 2 weeks time. Let's see what proper eating and training can do over the next two weeks.

Back Workout

Lats

Normal - 2 sets of 10 with 8 to warm up, then 3 sets of 10 with 10
Hammer - 3 sets of 10 with 11
Close Grip - 3 sets of 10 with 12
Rotary - 3 sets of 10 with bottom peg

Back

Rowing - 3 sets of 10 with 14
Seated Chest Supported Rows - 3 sets of 10 with 16 (normal grip); 3 sets of 10 with 18 (hammer grip).

I was at my strongest when I did my back workout religiously every week. Coincidence, or something to learn from? Shirted bench tomorrow...

I won't be doing BDFPA M3 any more after this year. M4 next year. New records to chase. One last chance to improve on existing British record at the NW qualifier in December. Really need to put it over 200 to set a decent target for those that follow.

Monday's Bench. Been s**tting through the eye of a needle Sunday evening and Monday morning, so went with sore guts and no expectations.

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 4
120 for 3
140 for 2.

Old SK on, everything to a 3 inch board

180 for 1 - good, but not easy
190 for 1 - possibly the best equipped rep I've ever done, timed it perfectly
200 for 1 - but of a struggle, but got it locked out

Shirt off and

140 for 3
130 for 5
120 for 8
110 for 10.

It's coming back, three bench sessions to go...
