Old Age Presser Member 75, 7740 posts SQ 0, BP 200, DL 200400.0 kgs @ 105kgs Eq | Thankfully, the elbow seems usable if slightly tender. The prayer worked. Tonight was a tickover session. 6 sets of seated rows (the one with the pad on the chest) 6 sets of lat pulldowns 5 sets of machine lateral raises (for side delts) 3 sets of dumbell hammer curls (light and tentative!) 35 minutes cardio 5 sets of sit ups on an angled bench. First sit ups this year iirc. I await tomorrow's doms. Bands tomorrow...

I got my ticket booked from Stansted. Now just the problem of getting there. Virgin wanted over £200 for a return train ticket because I was leaving at peak time. No wonder people don't use public transport. Think I'll end up driving down and finding somewhere to park. Is the airport long stay parking prohibitive?

Old Age Presser Member 75, 7740 posts SQ 0, BP 200, DL 200400.0 kgs @ 105kgs Eq | Ladies and gentlemen of Sugden, I have seen the road to 200. And the road to 200 is paved with bands. First ever proper band session tonight, and the first and over-riding emotion is why the hell did I wait so long to start using them? I feel totally wrecked, but in a goodish sort of way. We did a bit of playing about with different band options, before deciding on both the purple bands under the seat and round the bar about three inches in from the hands. Before that we played around with the mini-bands doubled round the cross member, then we added a wide purple and I thought my arm was going to snap under the strain. We reckon each purple band gave an additional resistance of between 30 and 40K at the top of the stroke, but I can't be precise. Anyway tonight's workout... Bar for 10 40 for 10 60 for 8 80 for 6 4 sets of 100 for 3 speed sets. Then both purple bands on and 40 + bands for 10 60 + bands for 8 80 + bands for 6 90 + bands for 4 100 + bands for 2 Then bands off and 4 sets of 100 for 3 speed sets. And that was it. Totally wrecked, but happy. Last four speed sets felt far heavier than they normally do. Arms hurt in places I didn't even know I had and front delts are burning. The right elbow is still bothering me, BUT didn't seem to affect the bench stroke. I can sense that, with time, this training will really bring my bench on. Probably discovered bands to late for them to have much effect on my performance in Italy or Burnley, but I should be benefitting from them by the British Bench next February.

Yes it is massively expensive if you turn up on the day. But if you book in advance it comes down in price, and the more notice you give the cheaper it is I tried to book yesterday for Thursday 11th October, Pete. That's over 2 weeks in advance. It was so expensive apparently because the train I wanted leaves at peak commuter time (0722). The first "off peak" one doesn't get me there in time. Think I'll end up driving down and using the long stay car park. Crazy that the train is much dearer than return petrol plus a £40 parking fee. In Germany last week, an hour and a half train journey from Berlin to Schwedt Oder was 10 Euros. And they say they want to get people off the roads and onto public transport. Fine words...

Old Age Presser Member 75, 7740 posts SQ 0, BP 200, DL 200400.0 kgs @ 105kgs Eq | Conventional wisdom suggests that band work is to assist lockout, primarily with a view to improving equipped benching, and it is very good for that. However my gut feeling is that it will really bring my raw bench on as well, for a number of reasons: You have to learn to explode off the chest in order to develop enough momentum to lock out as the weight increases quite dramatically. That has got to help raw work. "Accelerated gravity" (i.e. the weight being catapaulted down towards your chest) helps develop the relevant muscles. The equivalent "end of the arms" weight at the start/finish position is far more than you could bench raw, and that's got to help the CNS and get you used to a heavy weight. I feel that last night's session really shocked my system and that's got to be good for raw and equipped. I only wish I'd listened when people tried to convert me to band work ages ago. I'm not suggesting it replaces more traditional work. I'm just adding it to my DE session (which isn't hugely demanding, by definition) and doing the assistance work I normally did after DE the following day instead. BTW if any 50+ 100 Kg lifters are reading this, bands are absolutely s**te and a complete waste of time. Yes, I'll try and get a flag. Apparently I AM the male Scottish team in Italy. Lol - no pressure then!

Why wait, mate? There's no base strength level you need before you start. It's just a different way to train bench. They're appropriate for all levels.
