48 Rage X Mate. Have trouble getting it up my arms, but it's far lower on the chest than my other one once you get it on, and the back is far looser. Must be a later model. Felt very strong in it, but wouldn't get a touch with 210. Trying to stretch the arms atm, if I can get it right up the arm might be able to touch 205. Plus 2 more sessions to do it some damage.

Thanks James. After the debacle that was Malta, it's nice the get some proper weight lifted again - even if it is only to a board.

Just back from the European Masters in France with my first ever IPF medal. First a training recap, then a brief report.

Sat 16th Oct, Bench.

Warm up then tight shirt on and

205 to 8 inches
205 to 5 inches
205 to 4 inches
215 to 8 inches
215 to 6 inches
215 to 4 inches (4 inch board pb)

Mon 18th Oct, Bench

Warm up, then tight shirt on and

200 to 8 inches
210 to 8 inches
220 to 8 inches
220 to 6 inches
220 to 4 inches - fail.

Felt the need to get these in to build my strength back up again.

European Masters, Hagendange, France, Fri 22nd Oct

180 - good lift
207.5 - fail
207.5 - fail.

Silver medal!!!

Quick explanation of the numbers. Because of withdrawals, 180 guaranteed me a bronze medal. The Finn opened on 205 and was lighter than me, therefore anything less than 207.5 would have been a meaningless lift, so I stuck on a super tight shirt and tried to a.) beat him and b.) play with his head. Nearly worked! He failed first time, got his second (just) passed 2:1, and then failed 210. I couldn't get the shirt on properly, in spite of valiant help from Cliff Haynes, who reckoned it was tighter than anything he'd put on Pinda. My first attempt, it was on my neck. I got a touch but nearly throttled myself in the process. Third lift got it down properly but was miles off getting a touch. It just totally stuck about 4 inches away and wouldn't go any lower. In the meantime, Ian Kinghorn opened on 215 and couldn't get one in on the day, so my 180 got me a silver medal. As I said, could have done more and played safe, but I couldn't have lived with myself if I hadn't given myself a chance. The 180 was really easy, reckon I could have got 190/195 on the day, but championships are about medals and I got the best medal I could.

As always, an IPF international event is a great experience. Great cameraderie in the ranks and made some new friendships, both in the British team and from other nations, especially the Danes. Fantastic gold medal performances from Cliff Haynes and Alex Lee were the British highlights, but many other good performances too, especially Tom Collins, Lee Meacher and Andy Howard.

The event itself was brilliantly organised, but the banquet was a huge letdown. A five course gourmet nouvelle cuisine meal with 45 minutes between courses was not what a couple of hundred hungry powerlifters needed; neither was a ticket that, contrary to previous precedent, did not include beer, and the event was completely flat. The first course was served about 8.45 (we arrived at 7.15) and I had to leave part of the dessert to get on the coach at 11.50.

I've won plenty of international golds before, but I think this silver just about takes pride of place.

Thanks guys. Short bench session yesterday. Warmed up to 120 for 3, then got my new training toy out (Slingshot) and

140 for 3
160 for 1
170 for 1
180 for 1.

Wow! Shirt training without putting a shirt on! Nice. Then slingshot off and...

120 for 8
110 for 10
100 for 10.

Thanks James.

Not had internet access for the last few days, so a training update.

Thursday – gentleish back workout, rowing, lat pulldowns, facepulls.

Friday – Bench

Warm up to a single with 140. Slingshot on and
165 for 1
175 for 1
185 – fail. Slingshot off and
140 for 5
130 for 6
120 for 7
110 for 8
100 for 10

Saturday – Deadlifts

60 for 5
90 for 5
130 for 5
140 for 4
150 for 3
140 for 4
130 for 5.

Planned to go heavier, but I’ve had a few weeks off and this felt like enough for the first one back. May keep this progression and add 5 Kg a week. Followed by seated chest supported rows, rotary lat and facepulls.

So to last night. Was joined by Paul and Dave for the first time in ages. KFP and Little Martin there as well so a good training buzz.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 3
140 for 2. Slingshot on and
16o for 3
172.5 for 1
182.5 – fail. Slingshot off and
142.5 for 2
132.5 for 4
122.5 for 6
112.5 for 8
102.5 for 10.

Very disappointed with my numbers. How can I go from 140 for 5 and 130 for 6 on Friday to 142.5 for 2 and 132.5 for 4 on Monday???. Just got the best I could on the night. Nice to train with the guys again. Paul likes the slingshot!

60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 3
140 for 3 x 5 sets

80 for 6
60 for 10 x 3 sets.
