You know Sugden isn't alive when UKs doesn't even get a mention haha

My write up

UKs Strongest Man 2021

Day 1

Event 1: Yoke 450kg 20m

Was out in the first heat and Yoke had been flying but I was a bit nervous as I f**ked it up last year completely! Managed to get out fast but had a drop which put me behind, got moving well again but had another drop near the line, finished in 22 seconds for 2nd place but was well beaten. Yoke is going great in the gym but at these weights without a yoke to warm up with I'm inconsistent so I need to work on that aspect now.

Event 2: Dumbbell press 70-110

Got out well and smashed the first 3, didn't take any gap before the 100kg and it cost me, locked it out but didn't have it controlled enough for the down command, had to go again and got the lift but it gassed me for 110kg, 3rd place. This is definitely something I'm improving at but need more work on.

Event 3: Car hold

Only needed a couple of points so held it for 20 seconds or so and put it down to go through to day 2.

Day 2

Event 1: Sandbag carry 180kg

Really annoying on this, couldn't quite lock my hands in properly but felt light on the pick up, started down the course but my grip was slipping pretty quickly and dropped at about 25m for last place. Frustrating this one as my carries feel really strong now just couldn't get moving well with this. Last place so work to do!

Event 2: Van hold arm over arm style

New event this one, arm over arm position with a transit van on a ramp, hold it as long as you can. Was out first with Bilton so knew I'd get a decent marker by seeing how much I could beat him by. Got set and when the brakes went off the van felt extremely light so just switched off and relaxed, after about 30 seconds I had a little look at Gavin and he was struggling, dropping soon after so I knew I was getting points from then on. Held on for 71 seconds and won the event by nearly 30 seconds.

Event 3: Car flip

2 flips then a sprint to the line, got both flips done but not the fastest, thankfully my sprint to the line just got me an extra point so after my nightmare sandbag I got through to the final without doing the eliminator

Day 3 the final

Event 1: Truck push

I thought before the comp this would be the crux for me, top 5 and I'd be off to the races. Started off really well and was leading my heat pretty comfortably. Couldn't believe how well I was doing then halfway down the track the mats in my lane came off the boards and my feet slid away, the next mat did the same and everyone started coming past me. Was really f**ked off after that. I came 6th when I should have been near the top, same thing happened to Pa in the same lane. Really s**t for both of us.

Event 2: Brick deadlift

Max weight, no straps on a 12 inch pull with a basket underneath so a tricky one. Started off well at 300 and 320kg. 340kg went up and I knew I was in for decent points. 360kg wouldn't go, got it past the knee but the kit didn't allow for hitching and just didn't have the upper back strength to lock out. My pull feels strong at the moment but I definitely need to work on some low block pulls. Joint 3rd place so back in the running.

Event 3: Stones 115 to 175kg

Stone run to barrels on the oversized Stones. I've done the 175kg on its own so was very confident going in. One motioned the first two and as I was one motioning the third it slipped a little, I went into the rim on the barrel hoping to just trap it and push it on but the barrel fell over completely. Then the lad holding it up couldn't flip it back up so eventually loaded the stone but after that I was done. Lapped the 175kg in frustration after the whistle just to see if I could have done it haha as I thought at that point my comp was pretty much over. Really annoyed at this after the truck as well as the lad holding it was not putting the most effort in but its my fault for not getting high enough straight away. Used comp tacky instead of cool weather and it just wasn't quite warm enough, lesson learned. 6th place but essentially last as two guys had pulled out.

Event 4: Viking press

Was out first because of Stones and didn't even warm up, was just sulking in the changing room but I thought I can't give up I've still got to work, managed 9 reps which didn't feel amazing but it held on for the joint lead. Should have kept my head on better it might have got me a 10th if so so that's another thing to work on. Miraculously after that win I still had a chance at podium so I went full on pep talk with myself in the mirror and got switched on.

Event 5: Anvil carry 45kg 20m into 300kg chain drag 15m

Went out in the second heat after Scott Milne smashed the first heat. I absolutely legged it with the Anvil, launched it about 5 metres over the line, sprinted back and got the chain moving well, fell over the line just at the right time to get the finish and the event win. I was going mental and Lalas shouted it wasn't over the line, I s**t myself but then realised he had his wires crossed and I was actually safely over the line!

Overall 2nd place on count back, I have no idea how but the two event wins clawed it back for me massively. Couldn't believe it when they told me.

Really happy to pull it back but still disappointed to lose out on the title, the stones thing was my doing but the truck push flooring really cost me, I was 3 points off the win so it was likely very costly. Either way my best finish at UKs, first podium and the best result of my career so far. Was definitely the strongest I've ever been and the most conditioned. Big takeaways are I need to keep really pushing my deadlift above anything else, work on my Yoke and having a limited warm up and improve my dumbbell technique moreso but thankfully it isn't too long a list.

Great to be back competing again in front of a crowd and I can't wait for the next one!

Hope that doesn't come across as too much excuse making. I don't like blaming outside factors and I will take that mistake on Stones as my own and learn but the truck push really was as a dagger as I didn't do a thing wrong. Very fired up to keep improving though, 10 years in and it feels like the long term approach is really paying off now

Ain't that the truth! Eek I saw that Bilton won on Facebook, but didn't even put two and two together from the podium picture. Great result despite the mishaps!

Great result in a very strong field, and amazing with the equipment failures.

I’m not sure what the Giants season is looking like after Albert Hall but hope to see you in one of those comps soon?

Thanks lads!

I imagine I will be doing Brits but not sure about any others. The Royal Albert Hall events suit me really well so that would be perfect but I doubt I'd be shocked if I got an invite to that
