Monday

Log press
132.5 4x5

Axle deadlift
280x1

At this point I had to admit that I probably am overtrained and that I wasn't recovering. Getting to the end of a long season so need to be more cautious now in terms of my recovery capability.

Tuesday I had a massage then was away for my birthday for a couple of days hiking in the peaks which was perfectly timing with how I was feeling.

Friday feeling much more refreshed mentally and physically! Although my legs were a bit tired from the hiking haha

10:55

Log press 125x9

Axle deadlift 280 3x6

Yoke 350kg 6x10m

Sandbag steeplechase 120/140kg 20m
90 seconds

Buzzing to finish this medley, got to the 2md yoke at 55 seconds but failed the first load so had to f**k around for what felt like an age readjusting back to the lap and then loading but it went up eventually!

I imagine that after a season you'll be pretty beat up etc.

Is there anything you do coming into offseason that helps you recover better/more fully?

Also, feel well soon. Barfing up takes a lot out of me for a couple of days after.

Thanks Neil so other than my usual recovery stuff it's just a case of managing work load and not doing as much during the week as when I am feeling fresh. Had to leave training Saturday as I felt off and then did my mini leg machine session Sunday which felt fine. Started on log today and elbows felt off which is unusual for me and I just wasn't recovered from Friday. Pretty bored of abandoning so many sessions but I'm just gonna train tomorrow and Wednesday and then do a low volume event session Thursday then rest up until Englands on Sunday. Now is the time to be professional and make the right decisions.

Thanks for the in depth reply big chap.
It always amazes me how much work a strongman can handle. I can see it must be a bit of a stress when it's still the season and you have to drop volume or weight or whatever.
Hope the body holds out for a while yet!

Straps

Feel a bit knackered again today as expected with how I'm feeling generally so just mobility work for me and recover for events tomorrow.

Thursday

Log press
130x9 58 seconds (Pleased with that, wasn't the most psyched up with England's being on Sunday and it still moved fairly comfortably)

Yoke
360x20m 10.5 seconds
Annoying as I hit the door and it spun me quite a lot so had to hold on for dear life. Still a very quick time considering, will be well under sub 10 without that

Front squat
180x1 (Legs were feeling it after those events so just left it at 1)

Done. Feeling good and I think popping out the other side of overtraining now.

England's Strongest Man 2023

So felt very confident going in, knew I just needed a good start on husafel and I'd he off to the races

Event 1 Husafel: 186kg
Got a decent grip to start and felt very light but as I got to the first length my hands were kind of in the middle of hooking on and using my palms so I moved them to keep palms flat against it and the stone slipped down. Made the turn but it had gone too low, spent a while trying to hook it on my knee to repick but to no avail. 22 metres ish and last place so disaster start.

Event 2 yoke 40m
Crap run on this, didn't finish, just shy of the line. 6th place. I was wondering why as yoke felt so good in training but remembered I'm crap without a warm up usually. I started to address this in 2018 but since then we've always had warm up kit so just dropped off the priority list. Lesson learnt on that one, again.

Event 3 Deadlift Kratos bar 318kg
Again no warm up so straight out at 318kg but felt pretty good. Whip was a bit alien after all the axle work but went touch n go for the first time ever on comp and hit 8 reps for a PB. Thought that was good enough for the win but Flynn pipped me with 9. 2nd place.

Event 4 anvil carry 40m
Was up with Flynn and Paddy Haynes so I knew we'd all be quick. Was leading at the turn but Paddy got ahead slightly on the way back and beat me on the dive for the buzzer. 2nd place.

Event 5 incline log ladder
Weirdly realised that there were a lot of massive benchers in the field. Did quite a quick 4 but haven't strict pressed or benched anything since UKs so I knew I probably wouldn't hit 180kg. Quite low down with all the big pressers present. 5th place.

Overall 4th by 8 points which was extremely frustrating. Haven't trained for this, just focusing on Giants Live England's and assumed I'd walk this one but the husafel really got me and my pressing strength being relatively worse than I expected with this field didn't help. A s**t performance overall anyway with the bad yoke but it was my ego that got me thinking I could win it without prepping. Very annoying but on to the next one. The good news is I actually feel really confident for my next comp so it's not panic stations just a lesson learnt in tactics.

Had a deload planned in after England's, was off to Carcassonne on the Wednesday so reduced the frequency for this week but kept the intensity high.

Monday

9:48

Log press 137.5x5

Yoke 300 4x20m

Power stairs 232 2x5

Sandbag steeplechase 120/140kg 20m
67 seconds (23 second PB, buzzing with this!)

Done. Tired but a very good one considering.

Tried to get my axle deads done on Tuesday but it was a bridge too far with the fatigue from comp, left it at 270kg as that was way too slow.

Thursday

Front squat 180 2x8 (Beltless PB I think)

Vector jumps 8x2

Leg curl 3x10

Adductor 3x12

L-sit iso Bw 3x17s

Really good session, found a cool old school gym in France with some really nice machines.

Was flying back in the morning so slight change around on session order.
Was so up for deads and then opened my bag and realised I'd left my SBD belt at home. Well I say home I can't find it anymore! Anyway I squeezed into the last hole on my old APT belt and the session was saved.

16:37

Axle deadlift 300x8 (Just about managed to resist a hitch on these, really happy with it)

Vector jumps 8x1

Bent over row slow ecc 100 3x5

SA scap lock off 5 3x8s ES

Leg curl fast drop 32.5 3x10
