Huge lifting mate

On the other stuff....does being a great lifter automatically make you a great coach?

The success of great players as coaches in other sports would suggest otherwise

He's let me know I *SHOULD* train differently than the way I have been doing, deadlifting heavy 3-4 times a week isn't a good idea to him, and I can't possibly recover. This is what he told me. By 'doesn't get how I train' I ment that stopping me from pulling it on that particular day isn't going to make any difference, because I'll be deadlifting heavy again tomorrow anyway.

It would be interesting to discuss this again in 5 to 10 years time - if you ignore the weights you lift, you are still pretty much a beginner. Most people who are new to the sport can train virtually every day and still make great progress. It will be interesting to see if you can continue to train the way you currently do when you start to get closer to your maximum potential.

Tom -

Great job on your world record deadlift (and power shrug).

Which deadlift suit do you use and how did you size it? We have fairly different builds but I am looking to get a new suit and was wondering what you would recommend. If it helps I am about 171 cm and 102 Kg and will be pulling conventional style.

Get out of this boys bedroom and go and ruin someone elses fun !!!!

I deadlift max three times a week with him and I started training in 1994 now the fact that 99% of powerlifters are lazy boring f**kers isn't Toms problem is it ?

NO it's not ..

Tom is an exceptional lifter and I am a great fan how he trains and I am certainly not saying what he does is wrong. I've always thought powerlifters should train far more. I hope he continues the way he is going and goes from strength to strength. I was simply trying to make a sensible, adult comment about whether he would be able to keep this quantity of training up. I guess only time will tell.

I'm pretty sure you haven't been deadlifting to max 3 times a week since 1994 - it will be interesting to see if you are still able to do that once you start to reach your full potential on deadlift. Did you snatch, clean & jerk, pull and squat to max 3 times a week as a weightlifter?

Shouldn't more advanced trainees train even heavier and more frequent? After all a greater level of stressor is required to induce extraordinary level of adaptation?

Tom - I wear the tightest suit that allows me to still reach the bar! It's a 30 inzer fusion. Andy Bolton brought a few sizes to the gym, I tried them all on and picked the 30. I boil it regularly to maintain it's tightness. It also blows out from time to time along the seems, but it's an old suit now...

Steve - 5-10 years? I'd like to think I'll have a proper career/family by then! Who knows. I can't see myself treating this sport as much more than a hobby once I get past 30, it's my life at the moment, but it won't be forever.

JC - thanks!

Mark - bunch of trouble makers my journal readers...

I never said I'd quit altogether, just that I'd train differently than I do now which I think is reasonable.... There's a lot of days in the week where I don't see my home apart from my bed... I can't remember the last weekend I had...

Steve - the bedroom remark wasn't just directed at you my old friend but everyone who seems to be coming in Toms journal and even being slightly negative towards the boys programme ..

He uses his journal to give an honest open view of what he is trying to achieve and how he means to achieve it .. I can pick out many journals of a powerlifter doing a standard "template" Roll-Eyes Or whatever it is you people call it but this is a guy who believes he can push him self harder to achieve better results .

So coming in here disagreeing with Tom is basically disagreeing with his opinions and how can his "opinions" be wrong ? and I never remember Tom saying that he believes others should train the way he does or that he was better than anyone else ..

He has had a negative welcoming into Powerlifting !! I don't give a f**k what anyone else might say ! He has ..

Steve did I Snatch and Clean and Jerk upto Maximum three times a week ???? Does that question even need answering ?? Well of course I did ! For about 10 years !! I certainly didn't reach a 170kg Snatch through going "WestSide" or following a Wendler or what ever the f**k he's called !!

That must be crazy tight!

If I remember rightly, isn't the 30 recommended for someone closer to my bodyweight?

Are you trying to mindf**k me? I think you've made great progress in a year, 2 unofficial world records, very impressive. But don't forget I'm still getting better, in all honesty I've just started training seriously since you did your 802 total, so you could say I've only been training for 6 months!
