Went to B & Q today in search of some wood to build a bench press board. Did you know they don't sell 2x4 !? Begrudgingly, I allowed B&Q to set the new standard for board press heights, and settled for some 44x96mm. Glued it together instead of using nails, decided I wasn't comfortable with something I'd built with nails in it sandwiched between my chest and 200kg. So I now have a 5.3", 3.85" and 1.75" board to work off......... great....... thanks a lot B&Q.

c**t! Grin we have 6 cats. Keep picking the little bugger up and place her (all cats are reffered to as female if you dont know there sex) in the litter tray. Do it after food, after a cuddle, after you've beaten her with you boards and she'll soon learn thats where she poo's and wee's.

She (it's definitely a he though....) knows the litter tray, but won't use it at the moment BECAUSE IT'S A f**kING DISGRACE, I TOLD HER SHE COULDN'T AFFORD TO LOOK AFTER A GOD DAMN KITTEN but she got it anyway and now DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY GOD DAMN FRESH KITTY LITTER and I refuse to buy some myself BECAUSE I'M MAKING A GOD DAMN POINT.

I have 2 cockatiels and a macaw. I don't want a cat. For obvious reasons.

I just got a message asking about my training leading up to my first 300kg pull, and after writing it out and replying I thought seems as I'd gone to so much trouble I might as well post it here for all to see

There are a few things that contributed to my deadlift, and I'm almost frightened to tell you that the main factor was probably a combination of straight leg deadlift (no boxes or anything like that) and overtraining! (By many peoples standards)

I'm actually quite embarrassed to admit to you all that I thought this was a good idea at the time... it did however work really well...

A rough guide of what I did leading up to a 300kg deadlift from a 250 kg deadlift would be

Week 1
Tuesday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 140kg

Friday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 145kg

Week 2
Tuesday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 150kg

Friday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 155kg

Week 3
Tuesday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 160kg

Friday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 165kg

Week 4
Tuesday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 170kg

Friday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 175kg

Week 5

DELOAD!!!

Week 6
Tuesday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 180kg

Friday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 185kg

Week 7
Tuesday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 190kg

Friday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 195kg

Week 8
Tuesday - straight leg deadlift - work up to 1 set of 5 on 200kg

Friday - Conventional Deadlift - worked up to new 1rm of 260kg EASY

Week 9
Tuesday - Conventional Deadlift - 250kg x1 - 280kgx1 not so easy - not surprisingly, weak point is lockout, strong off floor

Friday - Entire body still f**ked, no training

Week 10

DELOAD!!!

Week 11
Tuesday - Conventional Deadlift - 260kg x 3

Friday - Rack Pulls below knee - 300kg x 1

Week 12
Tuesday - Conventional Deadlift - 290kg x 1

Friday - No Training

Week 13
Tuesday - Conventional Deadlift - 300kg x 1 - hardest thing i've ever done in my life, felt like it took 5 minutes.

MASSIVE DELOAD

So there you have it, 13 weeks of complete disregard for well established training principles, consolidated by an idiotic lack of respect for the effects of overtraining.

Oh, I almost forgot. I squatted Monday and Thursday as well, every week.

Would I do it again? YES. But not for a while...

Since then I've been training 'normally', I really doubt I could go through something like the above more than once a year. I've been doing a little more rack work in order to make my finishes a little more convincing, although at the moment they're still holding me back, and working on technique with relatively light weights, apart from a recent moment of madness when I was a little too excited getting into equipment for the first time.

And back to this weeks training.

Bench Press with Purple Jump Stretch band wrapped over one end, under the entire bench frame then over the other end of the bar. About 100 lbs added resistance at the top, 60-70 at the bottom.

1x5 empty bar
1x5 60kg
1x5 70kg
1x5 80kg

Me my grandad and occasional training partner Seb wrestled with some Tesco's bags and a bench press shirt for about 15 minutes before deciding it was 'close enough'. Who knows how one of these should look when it's on properly anyway? Not me...

Board in place, Call it 6" cos that's what it's supposed to be

1x3 120kg felt awful

did something to the shirt, not really sure what, possibly put the sleeves in the right position

1x3 140kg felt really nice

1x2 160kg

1x2 170kg

all paused!

Came away today feeling like I'd learnt a lot about the shirt, be it in a limitted range of motion. I haven't done any board work in months, and my pb unequipped was 170kg for 1 off a 6 inch board. At a push I think I'm capable of 155-160kg unequipped at the moment as I haven't done this in so long, so 2 reps on 170kg is really promising, especially as I wasn't getting very far into the shirts working zone. Can't wait for next time when I'll be going down to a 4 inch board. I'm not really confident enough at the moment to go any lower than that without qualified supervision as I have a habbit of dumping the bar over my face when I get close to touching.

Deadlift Day! Grin

deadlift -

70kg x 5
120kg x 3
170kg x 3
220kg x 2
265kg x 1
305kg x 1 NEW PR but knew it was well within my limits anyway

18 inch deadlift

170kg x 3
220kg x 3
270kg x 1
320kg x 1

Bent over barbell rows

60kg x 5
80kg x 5

Tom, on your progress from 250 to 300kg. Was your 1RM at the start 250, or was it higher and you just started low? 50kg in 13 weeks is effing impressive!!!

it's hard to say, I pulled 260 around February last year, tore my hamstring sprinting and did no deadlift at all for a long time, I'm guessing my max was around 250 but never officially tested it. I clearly had a weakness in my hamstring which I addressed with SLDL and as a result my normal deadlift increased a lot very quickly. big gains are easy to make when you have a big weakness to fix! having said that, I believe any deadlifter will benefit greatly from bringing up their hamstring strength.
