Tom, you seem to have problems with pulling your chest fairly often. Where abouts do you usually experience pain?

I pulled mine a few month ago and had problems ever since, it recovers to feeling 100% with no tightness or pain and then the weights start to climb and when i get to pb territory i strain it again.

The problematic area for me is like upper chest where it joins to my shoulder.

Well I've had a bit of downtime since my comp so I'm easing back into it now. With no comps to work towards for a little while, I'm starting again by building a new technical foundation across all 3 lifts rather than just trying to lift the most amount of weight possible, as

a) things were getting a bit sloppy as they were getting heavier
b) a break from the absolute top end weights is needed and welcomed
c) historically it seems I peak after 3/4 weeks of hitting the top end numbers constantly before continued effort becomes futile.

So moving forwards next year I would like to be a little more intelligent with my own training, planning around competitions better and spending periods rebuilding a base with technical emphasis, volume work or both, before moving into max single competition prep for the right amount of time, and no longer.

First 3 sessions this week -

1.

Squat - no belt, no sleeves (ouch)

bar x 5 sets of 3
70 x 3
100 x 3
120 x 3
140 x 3 (5 sets)
160 x 1
180 x 1
195 x 1
205kg x 1

Rusty, but not a bad first one back. No sleeves will take some getting used to.

Bench - max legal width - long pauses

bar x 3 x 3
60 x 2
100 x 1
140 x 1
155 x 1
160 x 1

135 x 5
135 x 5
135 x 5

The slightly wider grip is going to take time to adjust to, but will hopefully be worth it. Nothing difficult there, just uncomfortable with the new setup.

Deadlifts - deficit/weightlifting shoes/clean pull

70
120
170
220
250
270kg x 1

2.

Squat - no belt, no sleeves

bar x 5 x 3
70 x 1
120 x 1
160 x 1
190 x 1
210kg x 1 - happy with this, much better than yesterday's 205
220kg x 1 - not terrible, but not acceptable either. It was as easy as it should be, but half way up I got a bit looser than I would like, so called it a day here.

Strict Press - all reps paused

bar x 5 x 3
50kg x 3
70kg x 3

75kg x 5
75kg x 5

Still terrible at this...

Bench Press - max legal width, long pauses

bar x 3
60kg x 3

85kg x 8 sets of 3

3.

Squat - no belt, no sleeves

bar x 3 x 3
70 x 1
70 x 1
120 x 1
160 x 1
190 x 1
212.5kg x 1 - happy with form, just a bit lazy
222.5kg x 1 - much better all around!
230kg x 1 - this started to tip me over a little more than I'd like. Back stayed strong and tight but still....not entirely happy

200kg x 2
200kg x 2
200kg x 2 - no problems with any of these. Getting used to not having any sleeves on now.

Bench Press - close grip, no pause

bar x 3 x 3
60kg x 3
100kg x 1
140kg x 1 - brilliant
160kg x 1 - hmmmm a bit sloppy, could be better. No spotters so called it a day here
130kg x 8

Ran out of time so no deadlifts again Unhappy

Squats are progressing quite quickly, todays 230kg while not completely satisfactory was much better than yesterday's 220kg. Looking forward to seeing where I can take this while being super strict and hitting completely full depth. Hopefully I can get to 250kg before I start working exclusively in the comp equipment towards a big number again.

Bench feels like it's getting stronger with the long paused stuff. Close grip and strict press are both lagging compared with a couple of months ago, which was when my bench was at it's best. I now seem to suffer with lockout, and I'm hopeful that increasing and maintaining these 2 movements will help with that, as it did last time.

Why no sleeves. Are you trying to be more Foy?

I kind of feel like I've become reliant on them. How weak I felt the first time I squatted without them didn't make me feel too great. There's nothing wrong with my knees, so I'll see how far I get without them, and then I can evaluate their benefit (if there is indeed one) when I put them back on again in prep for competition.

Squat - no belt, no sleeves

bar x 3 x 3
70 x 1
70 x 1
120 x 1
165 x 1
195 x 1
215 x 1
225 x 1 - lovely
235 x 1 - stubbornly held my form while grinding it out. This is difficult to do
240 x 1 - let my back round at the sticking point a little bit. Most I've squatted with bare knees, but a technical fail for my current objective. 235 is still 5kg up on last time though, so can't complain.

Bench - max width grip, long pauses

bar x 3 x 3
60 x 2
100 x 1
140 x 1
155 x 1
165 x 1 - this came up pretty well. Pretty promising for the change to full width grip, as after only a few sessions it's only 5kg less than I did in my last 2 comps, and with a much longer than necessary pause also. I'm sure this will become 170 in the next week.

137.5kg x 5
137.5kg x 5
137.5kg x 5

These were really easy

Deadlift - no belt

70
120
170
220
270
305kg x 1 - this was pretty tough lol, my strength drops off so fast with time off.

120kg x 3 (5 sets)

Bench

100kg x 1
85kg x 3 (5 sets)

Well....that was really quite difficult to get through. Doesn't bode well for tonight.

PM session

Squat, no belt, no sleeves

bar x 3 x 3
70
120
165
195
215
227.5

205 x 2
205 x 2
205 x 2

80 x 1
86 x 1
90 x 1

72 x 5
72 x 5

Just one of many difficult days! Getting back into the swing of things is always difficult after time off. I expect tomorrow to possibly be worse!

I am terrible at keeping this up to date.

Not much to report. Did a 180 bench though....
