2007 PROGRESS

Well, how did I do in 2007?
At the end of 2006 my best lifts were as follows:
Squat - 177.5
Bench - 120
Dead - 205

At the end of 2007 my best lifts are:
Squat - 180 (+2.5)
Bench - 122.5 (+2.5)
Dead - 205 (=)

So I have trained 3 times a week for 52 weeks for a minimal / nominal gain.
Am I doing something wrong?

On a more positive note, I did compete in my first competition back in July (which I enjoyed) and I have my second competition coming up in February.

One thing I would say from reading your journal is that you seem to go for max singles a lot - especially on bench and deadlift. Maybe you would be better concentrating on going for more rep PBs and getting some quality volume in - 3s, 5s and so on - then maxing every couple of months.

Don't want to sound like I'm telling you what to do, but that's what I think!!

Best of luck with next year anyway mate, keep training hard!

Thanks Rob, I'll definately be changing the training routine after my comp in Feb.

Wednesday 2nd Jan.

Trained at the Yardley Gobion Club tonight, they had a good crowd of about 12-14 lifters in, all very pleasant and helpfull, a nice bunch of lads (but are'nt most power lifters?). As our calibrated scales are up at the New Farm Gym there was no official weigh in, however I was 119.4 kilos on my home scales this morning, so I reckon that equates to a good 120+ in real money (Heavy Xmas).

Squatting with Kevin and Steve Walker (I keep good company don't I? One a 2006 IPF Masters world champion and the other a current IPF Masters world champion), shame they had to keep unloading the bar when it was my turn and then raising the rack height by about a foot. Benching with Kevin and Ed Clarke.

Squat
5 x 75
5 x 115
4 x 135
2 x 155
2 x 155
3 x 155
Pleased with this. The first set of 155's was going to be 3x and then I was going to come down in weight and do some lighter reps, however I found their bar to be very "whippy" and I almost fell over on the first set. The second set was better but I bottled out of a 3rd squat. Nailed it in the end though and I'm pleased to report that they were all good deep squats.

Bench
10 x 40 Close Grip
10 x 40 Wide Grip
10 x 40
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 90
2 x 100 Both paused
1 x 105 Paused
1 x 110 Paused
1 x 115 Paused
1 x 117.5 Paused
3 x 100 Close Grip
6 x 90 Close Grip
10 x 80 Close Grip
5 x 70 Wide Grip
Pleased with these, all the paused lifts were to calls and despite the fact that Kevin (Miserable Sod) called the 117.5 a no lift (uneven lock out), it was all me.

39 days to my competition and I need to lose 10 kilos in weight, squat 180, bench 120 and deadlift 210 to qualify for the British U/E as an M2 - WHAT CHANCE??????

Friday 4th Jan.

A second night at Yardley and another good crowd, probably around 12-14 lifters in again. No weigh in again, however I was down to 116 on my home scales so I have lost 3.5 kilos in three days and the Xmas excess is probably out of my system now. The next 3.5 kilos will be tough to get off.

Deadlifts with Kevin and Ian Kinghorn, benching with Kevin and a new guy by the name of Jeremy.

I have decided to follow some of the advice given on here and concentrate for the next couple of weeks on reps, maxing at 85% of my competition target. When I can do 5 sets of 3 at 85% I will add 2.5 kilos and go for the same.

Squat Target is 180. 85% = 153. Start at 155.
Bench Target is 120. 85% = 102. Start at 102.5.
Dead Target is 210. 85% = 178.5. Start at 180.

DeadLift
5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 150
2 x 180
3 x 180
2 x 180
2 x 180
2 x 180
5 x 150
Not too bad, the 3x180 was a real grinder but it got there, no chance of a 3rd pull on the other sets though. This was a hard session with little rests between sets, Kevin was doing singles at 270 and Ian was doing singles at 240 so between sets it was all loading and unloading.

Bench
10 x 45 close grip
10 x 45
10 x 75
5 x 95
3 x 102.5
3 x 102.5
4 x 102.5
4 x 102.5
4 x 102.5
4 x 95 close grip
8 x 85 close grip
8 x 70 wide grip
The 102.5's were easy, even threw in 4th lifts on the last three sets. I'll move this up to 105 next week.

Monday at 5 see's the opening of our new "Farm Weightlifting and Powerlifting Club" at Moulton College. Should be good, I'll take some vid's of the guy's working out on the new gear and post them up next week.

35 days left before my next competition.

Good stuff, Finch. Excellent lifting there. If for any reason the weight didn't come off, what would you have to lift to qualify for the next weight class? Also, I don't deadlift, but a lot of the lads here will tell you that, for some strange reason, they can do 30 or so more kilos on the platform than they do in the gym. It just seems to be that type of lift. Aiming for the qualifying weight at the next category is not a bad mental trick anyway. It means that if you fall just short you'll comfortably qualify for the lower weight class. Just a thought.

BWLA unequipped qualifying for an M2 (50 year old) at 110 kilos is 510 total. At 125 kilos it is 540 total. Probably beyond me at this point. However, I am a really fat bloke 42" waist, 50" chest, 19" neck and my doctor tells me that I really should make an effort to lose the weight, so getting down to 110 will have have health benefits as well.

Monday 7th January.

Re-acquainted myself with the club scales today. 116.0 kilos, going in the right direction.
The first night at the new gym did not go quite to plan. We had a good turnout, even some of the guys who are not training at the moment came and put their heads round the door. The problem is............

Squatting
5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 140
1 x 155
Break
5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 130
3 x 130
When using the weights station to squat everything looks fine until you start to put heavy weights on your back. It's at that point that you realise that the floor has about 20mm of give/flex in it. It's like squatting on a trampoline. On top of this the bars are very whippy. After a really tough 155 I gave up and went into the storage cupboard to do some work on my own. Very disapointed.

Benching
10 x 40 Close Grip
10 x 40 Wide Grip
10 x 40
10 x 60
5 x 90
3 x 105
3 x 105
2 x 105
2 x 105
2 x 105
5 x 90 Close Grip
What can be wrong with the benching I hear you say. Well the problem is that the benches are in two parts with a gap in the middle, right where your arse should be resting on the bench. On top of this they are so high that your feet barely touch the floor. Consequently you cannot lay flat on the bench and you can get no drive of the floor. I'm sure the 5 x 3 x 105 would have been there on a proper bench. Very disapointed. Benching in the storage cupboard on Wednesday.

I took a couple of videos of the place and I will post them up later.

Those facilities look absolutely fantastic, surely you can sort the floor out somehow with some plywood or similar.
