Monday 3rd September.
Weighed in at 118.45 kilos. Thats the trouble with Jaffa cakes, why eat one packet when you can eat three? Plus a packet of digestives,,,,,,,,and a packet of Ginger biscuits. The list goes on and on and on and on and on........... I had a bad weekend with respect to the diet.
Went up to the BWLA unequipped with Kevin & Little Pete on Saturday, it was an enjoyable day out with some good lifting although it did drag on a bit at times. Kevin reffed the ladies in the morning, only deciding to compete at the last minute in the afternoon. Now considering he lifted in the 100's when he is really a 90 kilo lifter (weighed in at 91 - he did not want to go back on the Sunday for the 90 kilo classes) and that he had a full training session the night before, I guess winning your class by over 100 kilos and setting a new british record must be seen as a good workout. He was back in the gym tonight, his main goal for the year is the World Masters in 5 weeks.

Benching with Stuart, Kevin and Mark. Dead Lifting on my own, this was because Mark decided to have a squat session, this is such a rare occasion that everybody else stopped what they were doing to watch.
Bench
3 x 10 x 35 close / wide / normal
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 100
2 x 105
1 x 110
1 x 115
1 x 117.5 needed a touch from the right spotter
2 x 110
3 x 105
4 x 100 should have been 5 but arms gave out
5 x 90 close grip
5 x 80 close grip
3 x 10 x 60 close / wide / normal
This was a tough session and my arms are now completely fried. However this is the best my bench has been without niggling little injuries to hold me back and I am sure that the 120 PB will fall this month.
Sumo DeadLift
4 x 5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 130
3 x 150
1 x 170
3 x 150
5 x 130
10 x 110 conventional
Fairly pleased with this although the knees have still not got used to the Sumo style and give me some pain at the higher weights. I guess I have got to persist and build up slowly.
Swimming tomorrow.
Squats and bench on Wednesday.

Friday 7th.

Work is really hectic (and stressful) at the moment so training is having to be fitted in where possible. Missed training on Wednesday due to working late, fully intended to get a session in on Thursday but work kept me away again, managed this session on Friday and will be at it again tonight but I am scheduled to go to France Wednesday to Friday this week so I will probably miss a couple more sessions.

Squatting on my own and Benching with Mark.

Bench
3 x 10 x 35 Wide / Close / Normal
10 x 60
5 x 80
5 x 3 x 100
5 x 90 Close Grip
5 x 80 Close Grip
3 x 10 x 65 Wide / Close / Normal
This session was tougher than it should have been, however with just Mark and I benching it was all over in about 30 mins so rest between sets was minimal. The arms really knew they had done some work and halfway through the last 3x10x65 set they completely turned to jelly.

Squat
5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 130
2 x 150
1 x 160
5 x 110
Nothing spectacular, all good and deep. At the moment I would rather go really deep and fail the lift than be not deep enough but try to kid myself that it was probably okay.

Bench and Deadlift tonight (Monday).

Monday 10th September.

Weighed in at 118.35 kilos. Getting heavier again, the result of yet another weekend of beer and takeaway (both Indian & Chinese) abuse. Did I mention the 2 x Macdonalds breakfasts and the Liver and Onions in Morrisons. I'll put it down to comfort eating due to the fact that work is so stressful at present.

Benching with Mark, Stuart and Gordon. Deadlifting on my own. We have not seen Kevin for over a week, he is having to put in full days at work at the moment and I think it is taking it out of the poor old sod so much he is having to skip a few sessions, not a good sign with the World Masters coming up in a few weeks.

Bench
3 x 10 x 35 Wide / Close / Normal
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 100
3 x 1 x 110 These should all have been 2 x 110 but it was just not there
2 x 5 x 100 Actually it was 5 and 4
5 x 90 Close Grip
10 x 80 Close Grip
3 x 10 x 65 Wide / Close / Normal
Dissapointed with the 110's they should have been doubles, Stuart managed a 130 and Mark pushed up 120 but I am starting to lag behind.

Dead Lift
2 x 5 x 70 Sumo
5 x 120 Sumo
3 x 140 Sumo
2 x 160 Sumo
1 x 180 Sumo PB
2 x 160 Conv
3 x 140 Conv
10 x 120 Conv
I don't know wether to be pleased or dissapointed, whilst the 180 was a sumo PB it was just so difficult. This entire session was meant to be Sumo but after the 180 I could not get the second set of 160's off the floor, feeling really annoyed with this I tried lifting conventional and they flew up really easy. So now I do not know wether to bring my 7 weeks experimenting with Sumo to a close and carry on with conventional or to keep plugging away with the Sumo.

Not much nicer than a Mickey's breakfast when you're in the mood. Salt, grease, and crispy, the three major food groups.

The problem is you cannot eat just one sausage and egg MuckMuffin, you have to have two. Worse still they are doing a buy one get one free on Big Mucks at the moment.

Made do with a coffee and a bannana for breakfast today and I have lost nearly 2 kilos?????

Wednesday 12th.
Just a short session tonight as I am off to France in about 30 mins. Some light benching on my own then squatting with Stuart. Weighed in at 116.9 kilos, amazing what skipping breakfast can do for your weight.

Bench
3 x 10 x 35 close, wide, normal
10 x 60
2 x 5 x 80
No time for anything else

Squat
5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 150 deep box squats
3 x 160 deep box squats
3 x 170 deep box squats
3 x 180 deep box squats
2 x 190 deep box squats
1 x 200 deep box squat
1 x 250 stand up from 3 pegs below normal.
Fairly pleased with the way this session went the 250 stand up was easier than two weeks ago and the 200 was a good 1/2 squat. That said I thought my head was about to explode during the 2nd 190.

In France now until sunday so no further training until Monday evening.

Monday 17th.

Weighed in at 117.75 kilos. Not to bad after a heavy weekend. Benching with Pete the chair, Mark, James and Larry. Deadlifting with Kevin, Stuart, Mark and Gordon. Well I include Gordon but his entire workout on DL's was 1 x 120 then 6 x 120, then a failure at 160. Gordon's deadlifting is like Mark's squatting, occasional.

Bench
3 x 10 x 35 wide / close / normal
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 100
1 x 110
1 x 115
1 x 120 needed a touch from the spotters at about 6" of the chest
2 x 110
3 x 105
5 x 100
5 x 90 close grip
10 x 80 close grip
3 x 6 x 70 wide / close / normal
Despite not getting the 120 (which would have equalled my best) it felt okay and generally I felt strong. The PB will go within the next couple of weeks.

Dead Lift
5 x 70 Sumo
5 x 120 Sumo
2 x 160 Sumo
2 x 160 Conv
1 x 180 Conv
2 x 1 x 200 Conv failed both about 18" off the floor
3 x 160 Conv
1 x 160 Sumo Failed miserably - could not get it off the floor
5 x 120 Sumo
Well I guess that my experiment with Sumo lifting is coming to an end, conventional lifting just seems so much easier, whilst I failed to lock out the 200's the 180 flew up. This was the first time I had attempted heavy (for me) conventional lifting in nearly 8 weeks. So, whilst I might continue with some light sumo work, in future it is now back to conventional dead lifts.

We are still looking for a new venue for the Farm weightlifting club, there are now just 95 days left before we get kicked out and the vultures are circling, for instance, I've heard "can I have a bench and some weights if you have to close" at least half a dozen times in the last couple of weeks.

Swimming tonight, 32 lengths, 1/2 mile.
First swimming for 3 months. Arms hurt. Back hurts. Eyes hurt. Everything hurts and I stink of the chemicals they use to neutralise kiddie pee.

Wednesday 19th.
Weighed in at 117.85, very dissapointing as I have eaten nothing all day. It must be last nights fish n chips keeping me fat.

Benching with Kevin, Pete the chair, Mark and Larry. Squatting with Kevin and Mark (yes Mark). Something is not right in the world, i seem to be in a parallell universe where Mark squats and Gordon deadlifts.

Bench
3 x 10 x 35 Wide / Close / Normal
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 100
1 x 110
1 x 117.5
1 x 122.5 failed about 3" off the chest
2 x 110
3 x 105
5 x 100
5 x 90 close grip
8 x 80 close grip
3 x 6 x 70 wide / close / normal
Fairly pleased with this session, the 117.5 was easy and the 122.5 would have been a PB, it felt good coming down, a strong drive off the chest but I just lost it about 3-4 " up. It will definately go this month. After 2 years of wrist, elbow and shoulder problems, it feels so good to be benching with no pain.

Squat
5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 140
1 x 160
1 x 170
3 x 150
5 x 130
All good squats, all right down deep. I was tempted to go again at 175, however the 170 was tough so i'll keep it for another night. Again I'm sure my 177.5 PB will go before long.

All in all a fairly good session tonight, especially as I got in first and plugged my i-pod into the music system which meant that we did not have to listen to Kevin's "Golden hits of the 1940's" and "easy listening classics".

Friday 21st.

Weighed in at 117.45 kilos. Very quiet night tonight, just me and Kevin lifting. A bunch youngsters were in using the machines and Pete the chair came in just as we were finishing.

Bench
3 x 10 x 35 wide / close / normal
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 100
2 x 1 x 110
3 x 3 x 100
5 x 90 close grip
7 x 80 close grip
3 x 6 x 70 wide / close / normal
10 x 60 wide grip
10 x 60 close grip
It all felt very heavy tonight. I was convinced that I was going to get the 122.5 but the 110's were so difficult I came back down in weight. The 7x80 should have been 10x. Very dissapointed.

DeadLift
5 x 70 Sumo
5 x 110 Sumo
5 x 110 Conv
1 x 150 Sumo, this should have been 3x but I could not get the second lift off the floor. Consequently, Sumo is dead. Long live conventional lifting.
3 x 150 Conventional
2 x 170 Conv
1 x 190 Conv
2 x 5 x 150 Conv
10 x 110 Conv
It feels good to have finally given up the experiment with sumo type lifting. The 190 was a grinder but it came up, my biggest DL since the competition in July.

Monday 24th,

Very long day at work today, then a trip to Stansted so did not get to the gym until gone 7 and everybody had gone home. Consequently a really quick, light (no spotters, in fact nobody at all) workout tonight.

Bench
3 x 10 x 35 wide / close / normal.
10 x 60
10 x 70
5 x 10 x 80
10 x 60 close grip
This was actually tough at the end, 110 bench presses in 30 minutes.

Squat
5 x 70
5 x 90
5 x 110
5 x 130 deep box squats
5 x 150 deep box squats
5 x 130 deep box squats
5 x 110 full deep squats
Not to difficult but it made me sweat, all completed in under 20 minutes.

The box was made by and for a short person (Kevin) so for him they would be 1/2 squats. I am 6 inches taller than him so for me they are closer to 3/4 squats. I generally rest my arse on the box, pause for no more than a second and stand up. What really hurts is standing astride the box with my feet about 12" further apart than for my normal squat.

Wednesday 26th September.
Weighed in at 118.1 kilos. I blame T-Mobile for this increase in weight, but it's a long story so I wont explain. A good crowd in tonight, benching and deadlifting with Mark, Kevin and Stuart.
Bench
3 x 10 x 35 close / wide / normal
10 x 60
5 x 80
3 x 100
1 x 110
1 x 117.5
1 x 122.5 stuck at halfway needed a touch from spotters before I locked it out. So close.
2 x 110
3 x 105
4 x 100 should have been 5
5 x 100
3 x 90 close grip should have been 5
8 x 80 close grip should have been 10
I do not know wether to be pleased or dissapointed, the 122.5 was nearly there. I will get it before long. Arms really burning at the moment.
Deadlift
5 x 70
5 x 110
5 x 150
4 x 160
3 x 170
4 x 160
5 x 150
5 x 110
Good session, 3 x 170 was okay, resisted the tempatation to go higher. Mark and Stuart were up around 220 and Kevin attempted 290 3 times but failed miserably (he got 280 okay).
Kevin is off to the world masters next Wednesday so Friday will be his last big training night.
Nearly forgot, we had to dig Mark out of a 150 squat attempt tonight, if Kevin, Little Pete, Stuart and myself had not been there to grab the bar it would have made a mess of him. Maybe he will just stick to his deadlifting in future, his squatting is like my sumo deadlift - painfull to watch.

i would bet that had you not gone for a lift which was just 2.5kg under your pb before the new pb attempt you might have nailed it? Or how did the 117.5 feel like?

Anyways, it seems like the pb is very close! Keep up the good work!
