Wednesday 10th.

A crap night at the gym, 3 weeks out from my next comp and I'm really losing interest. Weighed in at 114.55K, fat bas***d (do I have low self esteem?).

Everything was fine yesterday until some to**er decided to put his foot down in yesterdays rain and end up in a ditch. The resulting delays meant that I was late getting to the gym and consequently everything was rushed. It probably did not help that I had not really eaten yesterday either.

Deadlift.
5 x 70
5 x 70 Sumo
5 x 110
5 x 110 Sumo
3 x 140
3 x 140 Sumo
2 x 160
2 x 180
1 x 200 should have been 2x.
0 x 200 should have been 2x.
1 x 200 should have been 2x.
0 x 200 should have been 2x.
0 x 180 should have been 2x.
Felt ill so gave up on the deadlifts.

Bench.
10 x 60
8 x 8 x 80
2 x 8 x 80 Close Grip.
Shoulder still has the same dull ache.

BAD DAY.....

Friday 12th June.

Cheers Ed, todays another day, so how bad can tonight get?
Weighed in at 113.7 kilos. Hmmmm, not too bad, I had an entire giant malt loaf (50% extra free) and a litre of innocent smoothie for lunch and was expecting to be much heavier.

It was a busy night at the Farm, even Sean turned up for the first time in months, he must have a competition coming up in the next few weeks, 2-3 weeks training is about normal for Sean before winning British titles.

Squatting with the Banker and benching with Red Pete, Big Dave & Tall Paul.

Squat.
Full squats, no box.
2 x 5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 130
2 x 142.5
2 x 152.5
2 x 162.5
2 x 172.5
5 x 140
I'm actually pleased with this, all the squats were good and deep.

Bench
10 x 50
8 x 65
6 x 80
4 x 95
2 x 110
1 x 120
1 x 125
1 x 127.5
6 x 6 x 100
2 x 4 x 100 Close Grip
Not a bad session, everthing up to the 120 was paused, the last two big singles were touch n go. The shoulder was painfull for the early sets (up to 95K) but eased after.

Feeling better about lifting tonight.

Monday 15th June.

Not many in tonight, Deadlifts with the Banker and Benching with Banker, Lurkio, Red Pete and Blondie. Weighed in at 114.7 kilos Fat.

Deadlift.
5 x 70
5 x 70 Sumo
5 x 120
5 x 120 Sumo
3 x 145
3 x 145 Sumo
3 x 160
2 x 180
1 x 200
3 x 1 x 210 Failed, Failed, Failed. Useless.
5 x 160
5 x 165
I am useless at deadlift.
How can 200 fly up but 210 not budge?
I'm sure that it is all to do with my head.

Bench.
10 x 50
5 x 70
5 x 90
5 x 102.5
3 x 112.5
5 x 102.5
3 x 112.5
5 x 102.5
2 x 5 x 95 Close Grip.
A relatively easy session on the bench. No real problems.

Another bad day at the gym.

Wednesday 17th.

Very quiet tonight, just 8 of us. Weighed in at 114.15 Kilos. Sean was back again, he is lifting at the East Midland Masters in 2 weeks, after just 7 training sessions in 6 months........he'll probably break some records.

Squat.
2 x 5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 130
2 x 150
1 x 167.5
1 x 177.5
All deep squats, no real problems here but the 177.5 was tough, the original plan was to go for a 187.5 PB but it was not on, I was a bit worried about my spotters (4 of them with an average height of 5'3" whilst I am 6') so I continued with some rack squats, front squats and other squat type stuff.

Rack Squats.
2 x 190 to 225mm below rack height.
2 x 190 to 300mm.
1 x 190 to 375mm, failed 2nd.
2 x 200 to 225mm.
2 x 210 to 225mm.
3 x 150 to 375mm.
3 x 150 to 450mm (about 1" above level).
3 x 150 to 525mm (level).
Very hard work these, strange how the lads tell me that at 450mm I'm about 1" above level but by dropping the supports a further 75mm I am only just hitting level. This seems to have highlighted my major squatting fault. At the bottom of the squat I start to lean forward in order to reach depth hence the bar is dropping 3" but my hips are just dropping 1". Consequently I am having to "good morning" the bar backwards to get my chest under it before driving.
Does that make sense? According to our resident physio, this is because I do not have full flexibility in my upper back and bend solely from the waist????? He has recommended that I work on my overhead squat and has given me some other exercises to do, this time next year I'll be squatting 200+.
Finished with some sets of 3x70 front squats and some devilishly difficult overhead squats with just the bar.

Bench.
Absolutely nothing.......

Thanks for the encouragement Marc, I certainly felt that Wednesdays squat session was a bit of a revelation to me.

Friday 19th June.

Two weeks to my next competition and I weighed in tonight at 115.05 Kilos! What a depressing start to the evening. Kevin was back from his Benidorm sojourn and joined Lurkio and I deadlifting. There were so many of us benching tonight that we ended up by splitting into two groups, I lifted with Lurkio, Banker, Big Dave and the overactive Groin.

Deadlift.
5 x 70
5 x 70 Sumo
5 x 110
3 x 150
2 x 170
1 x 185
1 x 200
1 x 202.5
1 x 205
1 x 207.5
5 x 165
5 x 170
A much better deadlift session than of late, but every one of the 200K lifts was a grind. Concentrated on getting the arse down, driving with the legs and keeping the form good.

Bench.
10 x 50
8 x 65
6 x 80
4 x 95
2 x 110
1 x 120
1 x 125
1 x 130
Now this was as far as I was originally planning to go, however as my PB is 132.5 and the 130 went up easy I decided to have a pop at a 135.
1 x 135 FAILED.
I blame blondie for this completely, just as we started to load the bar he nicked my York 25K plates so I had to use another pair of Eleiko's. The problem with being anally retentive is that I like to use the same set of plates right through a bench session. Concentration out of the window, bar came down too near my belly and only came up about 3". However prior to this I was feeling good so I continued.
2 x 125 2x PB.
2 x 120 Failed the third press which would have been a 3x PB.
5 x 100 Close grip.
4 x 100 Close Grip.
Well, perhaps not benching on Wednesday did me good.

Finished with loads of overhead squats, just the bar (20K). A more unnatural excercise i cannot imagine, I fell over a couple of times.

2 squat sessions, 2 dealift sessions and 4 bench sessions left before the competition.

well done on the bench pb and 4 200+ deads in one session is good going!

overhead squats are almost impossible ive been doing them as a warm up for a while and as yet have not managed to get anywhere near depth !

I can hit depth okay, my problem is that as soon as I put any weight on the bar I fall over when trying to stand up.

Monday 22nd June.

Weighed in at 115.15K, s**t, it looks like I might be lifting in the 125's a week on Saturday.

Squat.
2 x 5 x 70
5 x 110
3 x 130
2 x 150
1 x 160
1 x 170
1 x 180
Happy with this, all good and deep, I tried to keep the head up, back upright and chest under the bar.

Rack Squats.
190 to 225mm
190 to 300mm
190 to 375mm
190 to 450mm (about 1" above level)
Hard work and the last squat was serious hard work but the toughest thing about these is constantly having to walk the bar out and back.

Bench.
10 x 60
5 x 80
5 x 100
4 x 107.5
3 x 115
5 x 105
5 x 100
5 x 90 Close Grip
This was a bit of a rushed session tonight and I had to skip some of the planned sets. All the sets felt very heavy.

I don't know where the time went, I do not seem to have done much but the legs are giving me some grief tonight.
12 days to the next competition and I am thinking about 175/120/200 for my openers, to be followed by 182.5/125/207.5 for my second lifts. The main target will be to beat my comp best total of 510.

Wednesday 24th June.

Just 10 days to the competition and I weighed in tonight at 114.55 kilos. Oh dear, I guess that I could just stay fat! Eleven of us training tonight, deadlifts with the Banker and benching with Lurkio and Big Dave.

Deadlift.
5 x 70
5 x 70 Sumo
5 x 120
3 x 150
2 x 180
2 x 200
1 x 210
2 x 180
5 x 160
Satisfied with this, the original plan was to just go up to the 200 double, which whilst being a b**ch was always happening. The 210 single was a bit of a last minute risk, if it had not come up I would have been pissed off and worried big time however the technique was good, arse down, drive with legs slow but sure.

Bench.
10 x 40
8 x 60
8 x 8 x 80
2 x 7 x 80 Close Grip, should have been 2x8
Nothing testing an easy bench session tonight. It's suprising how quickly the arms run out of juice on close grip benching.

So in my last three sessions I've hit a 180 squat a 130 bench and a 210 deadlift. In the competition I'd like to add a litle to the deadlift and squat but I'd be ecstatic with the bench.

Heavy squats and bench on Friday, deadlifting on Monday then nothing really until the 4th.
