I recently got a job that requires me to be standing up in the same place for hours on end, and its incredibly uncomfortable on my feet. However I used to have a job that required me to be sitting all day and that was very uncomfortable on my back.

Do other people have these issues or is it just me? Should I be looking for a lying down job?

In terms of discomfort, standing for long periods is much worse for me than sitting

Feet in agony, legs aching, and my back locks up and sciatic pains start. Much prefer to sit down and fiddle about finding a comfortable position for my back. Standing, there's not much you can do to alleviate it.

yeah for some reason walking around isn't so bad, but standing still is horrible.

It depends on the nature of your job.

"The Workplace (Health and Safety) Regulations 1992 refer to standing. The law says that employers must supply suitable seats if workers are able to perform their duties, or a substantial part of them, sitting down.

No prosecution of an employer under this law has taken place. There have been five improvement notices served on employers. These notices have insisted upon seats for workers. All the employers complied."

Are you able to perform your job seated?

I have a sitty downy job, but I sometimes put my knees on my chair with my ass up in the air when I get a bit bored of sitting. I can feel my back getting ruined and I know I'm hunched over my keyboard a lot. Bad habit.

Yeah doors Rodger, sometimes 13 hour shifts

I've also had an office job sitting down and driving all day, it can get uncomfortable but standing for me was miles worse. Especially if your training and your legs are hammered

Sitting - you can adjust things to get comfier, and take a walk and stretch out etc

Standing - you can't et away from the pain or adjust at all, and I have nowhere to sit. No relief at all and it nigh on kills me

I used to do the door on a pub and found Clark's much better than anything else for long hours on feet. I'd probably have tried orthotics or equivalent if they had been available back then.

I worked in a coffee shop that had no seats available for staff for two years. It only caused discomfort for the first month or so; after that it was fine. I also found that my maintenance calorie requirements were much higher then than they are now (sitting office job).

I'm assuming this job involves interacting with people. In these instances I've usually found that being either miserable or aggressive or a combination of the 2 will ensure that whoever you're working for either moves you to a different department or dismisses you. Either way it's a win win situation.
Happy to help.

Good replies lads.

I have orthotics, iv done shifts with and without. Without them is maybe a bit easier on my feet, however worse on the rest of my body. Like my SI joint will be clicking a lot.

13 hour shifts makes me realise how easy I have it, mine are nowhere near that long.

Useful advice Travis thank you

I have issues with standing. My back seizes up and gets really quite uncomfortable. I very much enjoy being in a seated position.

My job sometimes involves me standing and staring at people swinging back and forth a lot.
I wish I had an atv wheelchair that I could do it from.
