So what's the difference between a hang pull and a rack pull?

A rack pull is where you lift the bar off the pins in the power rack, a hang pull is somewhat similar to a power shrug where you keep the bar in your hands and pop the hips, a crude description but if you google it you'll see how it's done.

Didn't think to search for it. I found this:-

Certainly not what I had in mind!

I'd call that a hang high pull as on pulls your arms generally should stay straight(er)

I suppose that is a high pull of sorts, but when you've only got an empty bar in your hands it's going to go that high. Normally the bar wouldn't go higher than your chest.

For a weightlifter a clean deadlift would just be a deadlift. So if you see Little A deadlift, for example, what you will see is the first pull of the clean (unless he's using a mixed grip). The grip is double overhand hooked, the shoulders are over the bar and the lift is fairly slow and controlled off the floor. Some powerlifters deadlift like this - look at Brad Gillingham, for instance:

He even has a double overhand (presumably hooked!) grip.

Compare this with Benedikt Magnusson, for instance:

The shoulders are further back at the beginning, mixed grip, and the lift is all about speed fromn the very beginning.

My PL deadlifts are similar to Magnusson's, so I distinguish between a PL deadlift and a clean deadlift.

Thanks Jo!

They went well today too in the end. Yesterday and today I had a bit of a twinge in my right lower back. Put some Voltarol on it yesterday and today but was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to squat or deadlift. But as so often happened, I did a thorough warm up, got started and it was fine. Left out the deads anyway as a precaution but it actually feels much better now than it did before I trained. Massage tomorrow as well. Happy

29/5/07

Squat
70x5x2, 100x5, 120x3, 140x5x8

Sets 5-7 were really quite easy. I reckon I could even go up to 145 next week if I wanted. But I'm not going to.

Bench Press
60x5, 80x3, 100x3, 110x1, 120x3x6

Also excellent. First two on every set were really fast, and every set was pretty easy - fairly short rests too.

Machine Row
127.5x5, 135x5, 142.5x5, 135x5x6

Had to do something to replace DL and this seemed a good idea, since I was restricted to the s**tty Sugden one on Friday.

I'm in a slight quandary about my bench press now. There are three options (bearing in ming squat and deadlift after this week are going to be singles and doubles working up to near maxes in the 4th week):

1) As squat and deadlift. This was the original plan.
2) Just carry on up - 125x3x6 (or 2s if necessary); 130x2x6 etc.
3) Take a step back and then go up again - 115x3x6; 120x3x6, 125x3x6

There's no particular reason not to go with 1) except that the progress has been so good I feel like I ought to continue with it and lay down some more basic strength before working up to a max.

By the way, anyone of us who were at the first Salford Muscletalk meet-up a couple of years ago might remember Chez (aka Mark) who used to be on MT and has recently joined Total Fitness in Wilmslow. Apparently he saw Robbie Savage there the other week - doing curls in the squat rack! Tongue

31/5/07

Squat
70x5, 100x5, 120x3, 140x5x8

Bench Press
60x5, 80x4, 100x3, 120x3x5

Deadlift
70x5, 110x3, 150x3, 185x5x3

Ow. Didn't finish deadlifts cos back was really sore. I don't think it's anything a couple of days rest won't fix - it was annoying not to get all the reps in on the last day though, especially as the squats were quite easy. Definitely another week in those if I wanted to do it, but I must restrain myself. Next time I'll go up to 150.

4/6/07

Squat
70x5, 100x3, 120x2, 140x1, 160x1x2

Pretty solid start to the singles. Should get easier the next couple of weeks.

Bench Press
60x5, 80x3, 100x3, 115x2, 125x2x6

Really good stuff. Could have had 3 reps on any of the sets - should be good for 130 for doubles next week.

DB OH Press
20s x 18, 13, 13

Pull-up
BW x 16, 16, 15

Starting light on the assistance and winding it up over the next 12 weeks. 5kg a week and I should be doing +55kg on the pull-ups 2 weeks out from the British.

+55 kg on chins will be pretty impressive!

Bet it feels weird doing that kind of low volume on squats after the last 4 weeks!
