Ok, write up time, even though feeling completely post-comp f**kupness as always Happy

First of all, huge thanks to all the helpers on the day, and involved in the set up of the comp - Bronco, Krypto, Jnr, Spug, Jono's brother, Fruity, Kathryn, Oak - and also to Jonathan and Kathryn for doing most of the organising and setting up of the comp. Big thanks to Stuart Murray for reffing it, and doing a great job as always, and also to the sponsors Riottraining, APT Prowriststraps, and InnerArmour, and to Ken for organising the sponsors. Cheers to all the competitors, some who travelled for pretty big distances, and also all the spectators.

Ok, first event, 100kg axle press - wasn't too confident, but went last so knew I needed to make a rep as quite a few had only made the clean. Clean was brutal, not settled into the comp at all, and struggled to it to shoulders. Once there, clean had taken too much out of me, and the press was no go.

Deadlift - was pretty sure I'd get 220 here, but the 200 felt tough, the 210 ok, but the 220 hardly moved. Took a lot out my lower back, and nailed last place here.

Yoke 320kg - was hoping for about 5m here, but got a decent run on the second pick up, and made just over 8m in total. Really happy with it, and was picked up a bit here after pretty s**tty first couple events. Got 9th I think.

Frame carry 280kg - brutal. Only made a few metres. Lower back fried, so multi pick ups were nasty, and so was walking Happy Last place.

Circus DB 50kg - aim was 1 rep really, but wasn't too confident after the axle. First go didn't lock, but made a rep second time round. Some fails, and some breathers, and made another rep. Happy with 2 reps, and should really have nailed more, but no complaints. 8th place.

Stone over yoke - played the tactical card, and went for the 115kg one. Nailed 3 reps, and was close to getting a 4th. Happy. 9th place.

Overall got 10th out of 11. Bit disappointed with the deadlift, but apart from that everything went to plan really. Comp ran smooth, and was good to see characters such as Craig, Will, Millsy, and Stephen again. Everyone did really well I thought, and impressive performances by all. Well deserved win by Ken, level headed and no weakness.

Now back to the lab to work on getting stronger, in all areas.... Grin

Full results will follow shortly, and also pics and vids.

Excellent competition today. Really good to meet some new people/see some I've not seen for a while and I aslo saw Brian there. I'm too knackered to do a full write up now but thanks to Fruity for posting the results. I'll give my write-up and video tomorrow. Overall very pleased with how it went, the Bull and Pete did very well too, but I'll let them tell you for themselves.

What are you talking about? I'm right as rain me. Training will carry on on Tuesday as normal and Strongman is already booked in for next Saturday with Joni and Pete. We don't mess around here you know, softness will not be tolerated. It's a tough school cock!

Thanks for coming everyone, and putting so much effort into your performances on the day. It is only the first comp we have organised, but it won't be the last 8)

Unit 20 Strength Challenge comp report
Saturday 3rd of Nov 2007

Firstly, thanks to the prganisers/promotors Jonathan, Kathryn and Brian, good job, must have been loads of work to put it all together.

Secondly thanks to the loaders and spotters and other helpers - they made the things run smooth, and to the ref Stuart Murray, his reffing style is calm, collected and clear.

And thanks to Oak for taking the vids of the Dungeon lifters events!

I think anyone who wanted to do this comp and didnt should kick themselves. It was great fun, the weights were heavy, distances short, event variation was good, equipment was top notch, great facilities - and the best sponsored goodie bag I have received so far (thanks to the sponsors riotraining, APT and Innerarmour).

It looked like good time was had by all and PBs were broken all over the place. No doubt everyone came out stronger from this comp.

ok, blow by blow:

Event 1: 100kg Axle, floor to overhead for reps, 120 seconds

Goal:
3 reps
Nailed: 4 reps, shared 4th place

Pressing felt easy, but the continental cleans killed me rep by rep until i had nothing left. Failed the fifth clean which would have given me extra points, but coundt finish it.

Lesson: get better with cleans, should do full cleans not continentals with this kind of weights.

Event 2: Max 15 inch deadlift, raising bar

Goal:
250-260
Nailed: 260kg, shared 5th place

Went 200, 230, 250 and 260. 260 was a real grinder so left it there. Very pleased to nail 260 after 250. Milsys slap helped by 5kg no doubt.

Lesson: get stronger

Event 3: 320kg yoke for 11m in 30 seconds

Goal:
to finish the distance in the given time
Nailed: 25.07 sec, 5th place

Cant complain, dropped the yoke 4 times, but managed to pick it up pretty much straight on and muscled it to the distance. Sometimes this is how my yoke goes. The next guy up, Mike, did 11 seconds so there was no way i could have beaten that time.

Lesson: more practice with yoke. Get those legs moving a bit faster as well.

Event 4: 280kg frame carry up a ramp in 30s

Goal:
finish the distance in the given time
Nailed: 11.02 sec, 6th place

Loved this event. The grip was strong, pick up was easy, and maybe suprised myself a bit there and lost some time. Mike was next one up again with about 8 seconds, which would be tough time for me to beat, so i am pleased. Weight could have been heavier, say 300kg.

Lesson: get faster, learn to shoot straight from the pickup.

Event 5: 50kg thick handle one-arm dumbel press

Goal:
1 rep
Nailed: 0, shared last place

Nothing but myself to blame here. Didnt put in the needed practise, and the technique was not there.

Lesson: dont be stupid.

Event 6: reps with 115 or 135kg stone (any reps with 135 beat 115kg reps)

Goal:
1 rep with 135
Nailed: 2 reps

Was really not sure if i should go for the 115 or 135, but then decided to go for the heavier one after much confusion and waffing around. Nailing that first rep was a great feeling. Second one was a bonus, but then my right hamstring cramped. Went for the third, lapped it, but the hamstring was not playing ball.

Overall placing:

Goal:
6th
Nailed: 6th

Very happy with how things went apart from the dumbell press. One point to the 5th guy, and the dumbell would have been the obvious place to get it, one rep would have been it. Or getting that clean on the axle to edge above Will for an extra point.

Our Dungeon crew did well, we were all happy about how things went not to mention kicking Unit 20 crews arse by a whiskar in overall placings if we calculate it in a way which is favourable to us Wink We also know what we need to focus on in the coming off season.

But I am also very happy that there are no comps for a while Happy

Video to follow maybe later today.

LOL, it was funny coming home last night, Joni got cramp in his groin and applied a liberal coating of deep heat which he managed to cover his spuds with. It seemed like agaony for a good 5 mins, he was trying to block out the pain,he said like farmers holds. Then a little grin appeared on his face, to which he said "it's actually quite nice nowGrin ".

Thanks to you all you guys, Jonathan, Brian, Fruity, Alex, Spug, Stuart and everyone else who helped on the day. It was a fantastic comp and everyone who was there thoroughly enjoyed it. Big respect you all you guys - thanks.

Now, where's my deep heat...
