Events Outside:

Arm Over Arm, P reg Vauxhall Astra over 25 metres:
Estimated starting weight 1300kg

Run 1 = Sub 20 secs
Run 2 Added 100kg = sub 20 secs
Run 3 Added 100kg = sub 20 secs
Run 4 Added 100kg = sub 20 secs

Car Pull:

Kept weight the same over same distance,

Run 1 = 15.17 secs
Up to now this just wasn't heavy enough so we loaded the car with every plate we could find downstairs and got to work.

Added weight in the region of 650kg. Still wasn't heavy enough.

Run 2 = sub 18 secs

Run 3 = I decided to double the distance and pull it for 50 metres. Still wasn't difficult and ended up sprinting the last 30metres. Didn't time it.

Upstairs:

Axle Cleans:
50kg x lots
70kg x 5
100kg x 8
100kg x 6

End. Good Session.

UK Strongman North Novice Competition. My first comp.

First off, I would just like to point out that although it's stated to be a "novice" competition, very few actual novices competed.

I was the youngest guy by about 10years and the smallest by at least 30kg.... Anyway, onto the events.

7.5tonne truck pull x 25 metres:

Really didn't know what to expect in this. I had been training with a sled tied to my lifting belt with no rope so a harness and rope was a little hard to get used to. I was out 6th and the fastest time up to then was 38 seconds and he was a BIG man. The whistle went and my puny 100kg bodyweight took about 5 seconds to get the thing moving but once it was i was flying! Probably in first place until i hit the slight uphill section and ground pretty much to a stop. It cost me, finished in 48 seconds.

5th Place

Atlas stones onto barrels, 20metres apart:

Now this was a rookie mistake, I completely forgot about warming up the tacky, but even when I did we were in the middle of a field with no microwave! I then had the ingenius idea of throwing it under the bonnet of my girlfriends running car but then my name was called! I plastered on what I could and went out for the first stone. Score to beat I think was 8 and I'd seen a lot of guys struggling to even lap the stones. First went up easy, then sprint to the second, dry tacky let me down as it slipped twice but I still got it up quick. Then back to the first stone, again easy. The second stone(or fourth rep) again slipped on me but I got it up. It went like this for the whole 75 seconds and I ended up with 10 stones which was good enough for 1st at the time. Should have been 14 at least with wet tacky. I know for next time.

2nd Place.

Axle Deadlift for reps. 230kg:

Now, I have been training partials for the last 8 weeks in preparation for a sidehandled van deadlift but they decided to change it last minute to an axle deadlift from the floor weighing an "estimated" 230kg. bo***cks was it 230kg. Reps to beat at this point was 4 with everybody else no repping. First went up easy but it shocked my incredibly cold body. Second went up, a bit of a grinder and I was losing my grip on the massive axle. Third went up just before my grip exploded. I went for a fourth but my tiny b**ch hands couldn't take it. Was currently in 2nd.

Would just like to point out that the MC actually said " We have ******* coming up in this event who we know is a great deadlifter!" Why is he doing a novice comp then ??

4th place.

100kg carry and hold for distance:

Was really looking forward to this event, especially after I saw the huge guys really struggle on the stones due to fitness. I had a sneaking suspicion I had this in the bag! Until I saw what we had to carry. It was a huge earth move/digger hook thing that picks up earth and considering I'd been training with a keg, it was unnearving. Anyway, I took my grip and the whistle went and wow it was so light! I couldn't believe it! I went 30 metres, round the blue barrel and back again to 60 metres where I nearly ended it all by rolling my ankle but I revovered and made it another 30metres and around the blue barrel again. It still felt light until it slipped and started to cut my genitals off! I had to drop it. Total distance 102 metres. I nailed it.

1st Place.

100kg axle for reps, floor to overhead:

I was s**tting myself for this event as I really struggle with getting a fixed axle to my shoulders. I was relieved to discover that the tyres and plates spun and was more like what I'd been training with. Unfortunately that took away my concentration from warming up my shoulders and it had become quite cold outside in this field and before I knew it my name had been called. Reps to beat was 5 by the goliath sized Dean Hall and I was convinced that I had at leat 8 in me, especially with a spinning axle. First rep to the belt, switch grip and up to the shoulders, easy. Then i press it out and my rotator cuff starts screaming! It's a good rep though. I start again, and again the clean was easy but my cold shoulders and triceps made the second rep a bit of a grinder but it was locked out. Third rep again was easy to the shoulders, but my shoulders were having none of it without a proper warm up. 2 reps, bitterly dissapointed and pissed! I could have won that event. 3rd place up to now. s**t.

4th overall

Medley: 180kg Duck Walk x 10 metres, ???kg tyre drag x 15 metres, 100kg Farmers x 25 metres:

Now, I was aiming for a top half finish in this competition at it was heavy for a novice comp and also was open with some HUGE men competing! It nearly floored me to learn I was SECOND PLACE going into the final event and knowing at this point that I had superior fitness and speed, that was a major confidence boost after my s**t storm overhead! My name was called and I realise that the handle for my duck walk was probably 3 inches lower than the dude next to me but the ref said it can't be changed. The whistle went and I was off in the lead, then the short length of the thing cracked my leg and I tripped. I regained composure And got it to the line where the ref shouts DROP! SO I do and go for the tyre, only for the ref to say my duck walk wasn't over the line so I throw it over. At this point I'm well behind because of that but i pull it back to the lead with what felt like an easy sled pull. Then I noticed the size of the farmers handles! f**k me, they were bigger than the axle! I pick them up none the less and they felt light enoughuntil my tiny b**ch hands gave way again on me and I dropped them about 15 metres in! I picked them up again and managed to finish within the time limit. Just. Dissapointed.

No Idea where I placed in that event. But I noticed a few guys wearing sticky gloves! If I knew this was allowed, I probably would have won the event. Novices eyy ?? Hmmm....

Overall I finished 4th out of 19 guys. I was 2 points from 3rd place and 3 points from 2nd place. Massively dissapointed.

A few rookie mistakes cost me second place but considering this was my first comp that was to be expected. Also, the level of competition was far beyond what I was expecting from a novice comp in terms of shear size of the guys! I really did feel like a little kid next to them and to place in amongst them only a few points from the top, again, is something I should probably be proud of.

All in all an educating but dissapointing exeperiance against a lot of guys who really weren't novices.
