Not if there is a squat rack you can use instead, unless you are planning to do a comp with a fixed machine squat in it

I think it's better than not squatting at all but wouldn't recommend it if you have access to a squat/power rack

Born-again lifters often say that you'll get injured using the Smith machine or leg press. Is there any actual evidence of this? Are there ways to mitigate any ill effects of S-m squatting (fixed bar path and whatnot)?


I don't think I've ever used one myself, tbh.

Probably good to train for a machine squat in a comp as Davy said. I used one years ago when my knee was dodgy. By putting my feet out in front it avoided the pain. Otherwise, no.

I also did exactly this in the early stages of recovery from ACL surgery, but once i had some stability in the leg it was back to the rack
