Last session of the year. An attempt on five threes with 150. I was not fully recovered from Friday, as I discovered when I started warming up...

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 4
125 for 3
150 for 3
150 for 3
150 for 3
150 for 2 (failed 3rd)
150 for 1 (failed 2nd)
140 for 2 (failed 3rd)
130 for 5
120 for 7
110 for 9
100 for 10.

Jesus, that was hard! Five threes just wasn't there, but the positive is that I don't have to up the weight next time.Grin After the warm up, every set was done to the absolute max. I didn't leave even one rep behind today. Can't remember 100 feeling that hard for years, so I obviously worked to complete muscle exhaustion. John WWW was one rep ahead of me on everything from the last 150 onwards (he did a pair on set 5), so from now on he's just WW I guess. Can't call him weaker when he's stronger than me! But he's still a wa**er. Found out why his bench had been sticking. The silly sod had been sneaking in for a shoulder workout in the morning and then training bench in the evening!

I didn't know you played, Martin. There are several of us who do here, I think - I believe Alex does and I'm almost sure Bryn does too. Bound to be plenty more too!

Big Jim is a guitar player i'm not musical. Photography, fishing, classic cars and occasionally golf are what I'm doing when I'm not in the gym.

Still a bloody good session, mate.

Bryn - for some reason I thought the Line 6 guitar amp that's been used for PA at the comps was yours.

Bloody hell! I don't post for two days and I'm nearly off the bottom of page 2! First session of the year tonight. Planned to go in and do a bit last night but I hadn't recovered from Monday's madness so stayed snug and warm instead.

Speed bench tonight. Warm up, then

100 for 3
102.5 for 3
105 for 3
107.5 for 3
110 for 3
112.5 for 3
115 for 3
117.5 for 3
120 for 3
122.5 for 3.

Two purple bands on and

40 for 5
60 for 5
80 for 3
85 for 3
90 for 3
95 for 3
100 for 3

and that was it. Trained with a new lifter that I knew from my martial arts days. He's not lifted a weight for two years and managed a triple with 80. Reckon he'll be strong as hell in six months. Watch this space! John WW was awesome tonight. He threw up a triple with 150 like Michelle Heaton on a night out. The lad's getting scary strong. I can't keep up!

Cheers Tom. I did every rep I went in to do, so that can't be bad, especially after new year. I didn't drink, but had a couple of really late nights and lie ins and it's amazing how much that throws your body clock out and leaves you feeling sluggish. Or was that the selection box that I ate on Tuesday? These last couple of band sets just blow my front delts to pieces, BUT the weight goes up 2.5 on everything next Thursday.

Thanks Tom. Trouble is that while you're right re drug free, I'm still a nobody in IPF terms. In the World Masters Bench, there were seven guys in the 100s over 200 kilos - and the Russians and Ukrainians weren't even there! I'm only the best of the sub-200 gang and to hold my head up in the IPF I've got to be a 200+ bencher. Hence the work (and hopefully the improvement) continues. Incidentally, my long term goal, before I even heard of drug free lifting, was to get the IPF M3 (Over 60s) title. So one of my little checkpoints is to lift more than the winner of the M3 title each year, and I managed that in 2007. If I can keep doing it, I'll get the title in eight years.

Also, Ian Kinghorn hits M2 in BWLA in 2009 and he's going to blow me away equipped if he maintains his standard. That's not negativity, just realism. Ian's done 245 before he broke his arm and he's back to 217.5 and rising already. But happily he doesn't plan to bench raw! That's another reason I really want the BWLA record in 2008, because it's going to be taken out of my reach in 2009.

Yeah, once he stopped shoulder pressing in the morning and then coming back the same evening to do bench, he started improving loads. Amazing that, isn't it? He might be moving up to the 125s, though. He's squatting and deading now and the legs are getting bigger and he seems attached to the power belly. Nice to see him getting closer to his bench potential, though, whatever the bodyweight.

Supposedly cardio, bench assistance and lats tonight.

Lat pulldowns - sets of 10 with 6, 8, 10, 11, 12.
Facepulls - sets of 10 with 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
Cardio 30 minutes for 478 calories.
End.

First cardio since late Nov/early Dec. Radiators on full blast. Was going well up to 25 minutes and then I just hit the wall in about 5 seconds. It was really weird, like all the energy had suddenly been sucked out of me (cue Little_A). Managed to keep going until the 30 minute programme ended, but had nothing left for the 5 minute cooldown, hence the sub-500 total. Literally had to sit down for five minutes, hardly had enough energy to take the lid off the shower gel, had to get a can of coke and a mars bar or I wouldn't have made it home!

Had planned to do horns and hammers after cardio. They will have to wait for another day!

On reflection I probably didn't fuel up enough, Tom. I was actually close to (my) record pace until the wall came along. And part of the answer is to do cardio last, I guess. Gonna go in today and do some shoulders and arms - on a full stomach.

s**t. I was on page 3 tonight! Of the training journal pages, I hasten to add, before anyone starts getting too excited by the thought of my shaven, oiled, pumped pecs...

Felt really tired tonight, had to force myself to go to the gym, everything was one big struggle...

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
125 for 3
145 for 5
145 for 5
145 for 5
140 for 5
135 for 5.

One band on and

100 for 5
110 for 5
120 for 4 (didn't even attempt the fifth)
110 for 5
100 for 5

Band off and 100 for 10 to finish.

Not done three fives with 145 before, so I guess that's a sort of pb. I find it difficult to accept I'm writing that because I felt flat the whole way through and couldn't stop yawning. It's a funny old game, this. Didn't quite make the top five with the bands but no big deal. I did two extra sets of five (140 and 135) because the others were on their five threes day and I was on my three fives. Not surprising that these ten extra reps robbed me of a fifth band rep on my heavy set, I guess.

John WW continues to impress. Five fives with 145, managed the fifth band rep on 120 that I missed, and finished after all that with 18 reps with 100.

Glad I forced myself in - hopefully will have more energy on Thursday.

Catts next Monday and a bit of shirt work...
