I was training solo tonight and got slightly bored between sets, so much so that I decided that it would be a good idea to weigh all my weights.

I've got a set of £450 Seca scales that I've manged to acquire (and have tested against a recently calibrated set) and they are spot on - they weighed my Texas Power Bar at 20Kg exactly Cool

I was obviously expecting some variation, but I was quite surprised at just how much.

My 20kgs average at 20.4kg and my 15kgs at 15.3kgs. My 10's, 5's and 2.5's are all spot on.

So when I've got 245kg loaded on the bar it's actually 249.5ish Eek

I'm assuming that it's just as possible for weights to be under as well and this probably explains why weights can feel so different when I frequent different gyms - always thought it was just my my head.

Cheers

Macca

I've got four 25kg disks which were originally a 1 inch hole and have been drilled out to fit an Olympic bar and still weigh over 25kg?

Interesting. Wouldnt be suprised if the weights I use at the Sugden are far far worse!

Theres nothing worse than weights that weigh more than they should do. I remember a gym I trained at had these gold 20s that where known to be underweight at about 17.5kg. If I was having a bad day I would use them and enjoy the false sensation of strength. I dont know what it says about me but I am sure it isnt good Happy

Surely it's better your gym weights being heavy than light though!

Nothing worse than thinking you can lift something easy and find out you cant during a comp!

yeah, if all the weights we use when training are heavier than they should be then we are stronger than we think, which is good. I'm heavier than stated too. I think I'm about 5kg out.

20.4k is 45lbs exactly, possibly rebranded to just say "20kg" Macca.
Lifes too short.
Having said that, no idea if Sugden weights are what they say they are.

Milsy weighed his bodypower plates after everyone who used them nailed big pbs.

the 20s were ranging from 17.5 to 19.5 Grin

Short lived but ever so infamous muscletalk2 made a scoop out of it (scroll way down, its the first news item):

No chance Smalls - They just averaged out at that, went from 20.1 to 20.7

Yes I've done it in the past, we had our seca scales tested recently which were spot on and the tester said they only ever go wrong if they get dropped. On the face of it your weights aren't that bad (less than 2% out) as most of them are fairly rough cast there will always be a variation over ones which are turned all over. At least you know of the difference now and it's better they're over not under so at least on contest day the weights will appear slightly lighter for you.

With plates, manufacturers should always give a 'variance' which the retailer you buy from should also be able to tell you. up to about 500g either way for cheaper plates (20's) is ok imo, though I think about 2% is standard for decent 'cheap' plates. Calibrated plates will be much closer but will still have a variance rating. Anything over 1kg either way, and I wouldn't be happy using or selling them. We've got rubber coated 15's in the gym that are 16.5 and they just never get used.
