saw most of todays lifting at the unequiped ,got there a little late saw fruitbat,s 135 deadlift which looked very easy and met Jonnie from this site ,both of whom were looking good in their Sugden barbell t shirts ,made me wish I'd worn mine!

saw some good lifting there were some very strong deadlifts from some of the girls with 3 girls going over 165, some poor bas***d in the 75's managed a 237.5k deadlift which was a british record and then dropped it on the way down about 4 inches from the floor!
but the pick of the day for me was in the 100k's where a bloke from the Nw in apparently only his 2nd ever comp did a 270 squat and it was monstrously deep and relatively comfortable!

Kevin Jane from the farm powerlifting club decided to compete on the day (despite squatting up to 270 and deadlifting to 250 last night) and set a new 100k m2 British record deadlift at 267.5 which he made look a peice of piss ( it probably was apiece of piss as Ive seen him do 290 in the gymn)

On the down side I thought it was a shame that nowhere on the bwla website was the venue
adress published and it seemed like nothing had been done to promote the event. In fact it took me 20 minutes of wandering round the industrial unit before I found it and nowhere did I see any signs about powerlifting or British championships. Given that this was the national championships I thought it was a shame fewer than 50 people were spectating ,the atmosphere seemed a little muted for a lot of the day with little
encouragement for the lifters although this picked up significantly for the 100k boys.

all in all it was a pretty enjoyable day and has left me feeling fired up to train like mad so that in a couple of years I can be ther competing instead of spectating!

Interesting post Ed, some good points. I think it would be fair to say that there is far less emphasis on unequipped lifting with BWLA - there's no way they wouldn't have had a confirmed venue for the national equipped championships until merely weeks before the event.

I guess this just a reflection of what is more important on an international level though.

I wondered if this might have been the reason ,there was lots of talk among some of the
veteran lifters that a lot of the invites never got sent out and that no one could really be arsed to organise it properly!

Its a shame because if they want the sport to grow it's going to be unequipped that will draw new people in as most new people wont want to fork out on 3 different suits at £100a pop or whatever they cost!

I think powerlifting is a brilliant sport but up untill january of this year Id never even heard of it and only discovered it by accident whilst looking for strongmen sites on the internet!

aye, and four people came to me (since i was wearing sugden t-shirt) and said they read the forums time to time, that was good too!

Though certain folk did gave some stick on the mad routines that are common on our little site Grin

But it does seem like SB is a well known forum among strength athletes adn enthusiasts. And i think thats good because in my opinion this forum has done good work in bringing new folk into the sport(s).

I was there all day Saturday. Scrounged a lift up with Kevin who was looking after the weighing in for the morning session and then reffed all the ladies lifts, as did little Pete. Consequently I was there for 8:45AM and did not leave until after 6:30PM. I can reccomend the breakfast at the cafe downstairs though.

Saw Fruitbat and Jon in there SB tee's but they were wrapped up in the comp so I left them to it. I was the fat bald bloke in the ill fitting brown tee shirt. Thanks for the tea's Ed, I hope the missus did not give you too much of a hard time for staying late.

Kevin decided to lift at the very last minute, saying "I'll just do my openers" but this went out of the window when he failed his opening squat. then he said, "I think I'll go for the DeadLift record". Consequently, despite lifting in the 100's when he is really a 90 kilo lifter (he weighed in at 91) and completing a full training session the night before, he won the comp by over 100 kilos and set a new record in the process. In 5 weeks he will be in the Czech Republic for the masters, going for his first world title.

There really was some excellent squatting in the 100 kilo class, with the lad from Wigan (Boyhan?) going really deep with 270 kilos in only his second competition????
I thought that all the ladies did really well, although it was a shame that one girl opened her squat way to high and consequently bombed out, she looked very strong.

A long but enjoyable day. Pity I missed Sunday's lifting though.

I know EXACTLY who that'll be, we saw his first comp (in fact I was on the platform crew). He's a beast. Incredible potential.

I have been running around in a panic all day today because I have gone about claming my records wrong. It was only by chance I realised that one has to fill a form in and have the judges sign it. But even less did I realise until Jordana told me today, that there is a 48h deadline on it an I didnt have the address of the records registrar which i have got hold of just now. All seems ridiculously strict and complicated Confused I hope my records will still be accepted despite being 24h-48h late...

270 squat which looked comfortable 160 bench and opening deadlift of 260 dont know what total he finished with as I didnt see his last 2 deads but either way he's a monster
spoke to him briefly after his squat and he reckoned he was carrying a slight injury and there was more to come ,came across as an allright bloke!

Why has Iain's grand total got a line through it?
