(or any other kind of athlete) I've always been pretty keen on getting 4-5 days a week of strength training and then reaping the benefits in terms of feeling generally better on a daily basis, but recent issues such as a recurring shoulder and knee injury plus taking on more responsibility work-wise and other developments in personal life mean I have far less time to train. Perhaps time to look at a 3 day a week split or something.... Having a jacked back and a massive neck saved my life 8 days ago. Thats a fair old benefit lol

I felt the best when I was doing a lot of running last year. I've had more back issues since quitting but that might be related to the lifting.

(speaking from experience). In all seriousness though, I think it can actually cause mental issues. Out of all my lifting mates, the majority suffer with anxiety and panic disorders (myself included). Out of all my non-lifting friends, I can't say the same (probably not enough total friends for it to be scientifically 'statistically significant'). Not sure if it's from training ups causing down, or the drain it has if you commit to the training week in week out without fail. I'm sure others will share their thoughts on this (I would appreciate knowing if other people have this trend in their relevant groups...)

Member 6264, 208 posts | I've not lifted for a very long time and also had long periods of time off between training. I always feel great when I get back into it both mentally and physically and have stopped in the past from getting fed up of getting injured. Maybe the longer you lift the less beneficial it is with injury's and what not. Also I think on the mental side the longer you do something the more you expect from yourself which then puts pressure on yourself to perform. I'm not a competitive person and being s**t at something takes no pleasure out of an activity. On the flip side what are the benefits of not training?

There's possibly an element of people with 'issues' being more likely to be drawn to weight-training in the first place?

6:19.WTF Member 3359, 3677 posts SQ 250, BP 210, DL 295755.0 kgs @ 89kgs UnEq | For me training puts me in a far better physical and mental state. I look after myself more, eat cleaner, don't drink (as much) and just feel a lot better about myself. I've trained most of my life doing one thing or another and for me it's a lot better than the periods where I've not trained. As to your question Aaron, I guess it says a lot about the people I've grown up with but a lot of my none training peer group are basically physically f**ked. Overweight, back problems, self image problems, just very sedentary. As for mental issues, I see them in both groups, not one more than the other.
