For any new guys to sugden who may not know but the only reason I got into strongman is because of this very sight. It's been a magical journey for me and I still never quite believe how far I have come in short space of time. I just wish this sight was full of the same enthusiasm and support it use to be.

My expectations for this comp was pretty simple. Pull 400 and don't finish last. The comp is six events not just a deadlift which ended up being one of reasons I finished where I did.....my intent was to try do more damage on the other five events.

Max deadlift.
Warmed up to 370 in the back, felt very pumped and ready for 400. When it went I was pleasantly surprised how easy it felt definitely strongest deadlift has ever been. So good improvement. I attempted 420 but definitely weren't with same focus n desire and I failed it at the knee.......
Near last

Yoke.
Six guys left. I had my work to do as finished near last on deadlift. Set off quick head to head with radz by 20m was good pace ahead but like I do on grass my footing went and I almost lost the yoke. Drifted to side but managed to get over line to what looked at the exact same time as radz but the stop clock sed differently.
Thor and Johannes were a second faster too
4th
But was Fukin close

Forward hold
Had trained this few times. Felt confident I could win. Again alongside radz and I was 0.5secs longer. Thor beat my time by few seconds. Good result
2nd place

Dumbel
Went out last against Thor. 5was the lead I just set out to do 6 and just managed to within the time limit. Really think I can improve loads on this too with more practice.
2nd place

Stones
My most dreaded event based on past performances. Scoreboard had me 1.5points ahead of radz. I was sat in third place overall.
He failed the 180. Barrels were quite high I thought.
Set out to do quick 4 and beat radz time but they felt easy so went on and did the 180 and beat felix in the process. 200 weren't essential and I wanted to save myself for loading.
3rd place

Loading medley
Everyone was tired. It was further than ever before too. 3.5points ahead of radz and we were head to head.
He asked what I'm like at running I just told him he was f**ked and he's no chance lol
I set off like a rocket on first keg and by 3rd implement had great lead. Hamstrings were going on last sandbag but finished in good time. Weren't quick for my standards but was enough to come second.
2nd place

Overall
3rd place

By the end of the competition I felt tired as we only had breakfast at 8am and bar the odd banana and snickers I'd not eaten all day.

It was an amazing day and I felt on all events I had improved loads and it was nice to see the amount of event training had paid off. I still feel like I have lots of improving to do I just need to remain injury free and I'm sure I can become more and more harder to beat.

I'm resting now. Training be minimal and I'm due to be a dad in just a few days.

I have qualified for wsm but do intend to challenge for Brits on 14th February. In four weeks time my training will commence for that competition and wsm...........nice long buildup which I'm really looking forward to

Thanks for reading

And thanks for the support.

Well done mate.

Great to read a good old fashioned Sugden write up too.

Will look forward to seeing it on TV.

All the best for the next few weeks and the new challenge and excitement they will bring.

Cool

I haven't posted for a while on sugden but I often come and look around.
Your post Hixxy is exactly why this site is worthwhile. A world class athlete sharing his experiences is great motivation for the likes of me. It's true that sometimes the forum can get a little negative but positive posts like yours keep me coming back. Keep up the good work Hixxy and all the very best with your new family! Jon.

I have a baby boy born 4weeks ago. My training has improved since he was born. Its the greatest feeling and when I train am buzzing and having a blast. Hopefully you keep improving. The rate your going, I see no reason that you can't become one of the very best on the planet.

Nice write up and good luck with your future comps and becoming a dad.

Well done, amazing progression in such a short time. I'm sure more success will follow and congratulations on the baby.
It's also quite hard to comprehend that a 400kg deadlift is now an opener and can leave someone down the placings.
