About time I started a log, I suppose.

Current numbers;

Bodyweight: 93kg

Squat: 200kg
Bench: 100kg
Deadlift: 220kg

You can see why the journal title makes sense now. For the majority of my lifting history, I was held back on my press gains due to a s**tty left shoulder. I eventually got round to having physio, and the problem stems from a tight left pec minor, which pulls my teres minor tight and then I get referred pain down the arm. This kept my bench below 70kg for a very long time, and I only really made any gains from about April onwards.

Misc. other notable things;

Squat 190kgx4
OHP 65kgx3
Prettiest Powerbelly 2013 (I may have made that up)

Goals:

My main goal is to get down to 83kg to compete this year, however I'm only short 25kg of a qualifying total to compete at the British at 93kg. There's more than 200kg in my squat, and I think simply getting better at benching and deadlift, technique-wise, should lend a few extra kg's.
I'm hesitant to set myself any solid tangible goals for the individual lifts, because I know if I do that will become my sole focus and I'll never get down to 83kg.

My intention is to try and log all my training sessions, and weigh in weekly too. For the start of the new year I'll be running Smolov Jr. for bench, alongside Magnusson/Ortmayer for Deadlift. Taking a deload on squats while I refine my technique and let my knees recover. For the Smolov portion I'll be eating at maintenance, then the defecit starts after that 3 week period. Although (as you'll see in the videos I'll post) my max is probably higher than the 220kg PB I put up in comp, I'll be using that as my training max to err on the cautious side.

I want to compete at least 3 times this year, and try to match or improve my total each time, whilst weighing in less each comp. The powerbelly needs to go!

Today was my first session in my new squat shoes, Adidas Powerlift 2's . Squats feel very solid, easier to make depth but I couldn't push the weight because my quad is still a bit iffy from Monday's 190kgx4.

Squat
warm up 2x5 empty bar,
60kgx5,
100kgx5
140kg 4x3

Bench Press
warm up 2x5 empty bar,
40kgx5,
60kgx5,
75kgx3
85kgx3, 80kg 3x3

Not sure if I should have kept my shoes on for bench or not. Felt tighter in my setup with them on, but it was harder to maintain and I found myself slipping up the bench more.

Dumbbell Incline Bench
14kgx8
21kg 4x12

Chest Supported Row
Empty Handles (about 10kgish?) x8
+10kg x8
+15kg 2x8
+20kg x8

Overhead Squat
10kg x 10

Using my vibrams or deadlift slippers I'd never been able to do an overhead squat without some difficulty, which I though was down to ankle flexibility. These were significantly easier in a heeled shoe. I might start working them in periodically, like on those days when I'm finished sooner that I expect, for shoulder stability.

Machine Shrug
100kg x10
140kg x10
180kg x10

Using this kind of machine with the handles set to low for shrugs, and high for presses

Machine 'Viking' Press
empty handles x 8
5kg x8
15kg x8

Taking some inspiration from WSM today for a bit of different assistance work. Leverages probably different to a proper Viking Press. I can feel it in my rear delts, but without the discomfort of a behind the neck press. Might keep this in regular assistance rotation.

Barbell Curl
25kgx8
20kgx8
15kgx8

Bit of time left over so decided to get my pump on.

I think you'll do great mate. There is more there in squat and dead and mag/ort is awesome. Smolov Jnr will help you press better. I think you have planned really well.

30/12/13

Today was the first day of Smolov Jr for bench. All sets went fine, minimal amount of assistance work (just light squats to keep ticking, and rows to balance the pressing) but I feel absolutely wiped out. I get the feeling I may be coming down with something. Not sure why but the things aching the most are my lower back and my quads, even though the squats were just around 50%.

Symptoms: Sore throat, slight shortness of breath, bit snotty, feeling fatigued and mardy.
Diagnosis: Probably the plague
Treatment: Hammering the First Defense spray, cheeseburgers, and Phish Food ice cream. Going to bed straight after WSM.

I'm hoping that this will go away in a few days and not affect my training, however Jo's had this for a week, starting with the sore throat and moving on to barking like a dog (so she's probably infected me). The First Defense should keep it from spreading to my nose, which is the worst part of a respiratory illness for me, as a blocked/runny/gay nose stops me from sleeping.

Overhead Squats
10kgx10

Quick mobility warm up, just f**king around while I waited for a rack to be free.

Squats
Warm up empty bar 2x5
60kg x5
110kg 3x5

Bench
Warm up empty bar 2x5
40kg x5
60kg 2x3
70kg 6x6

Chest Supported Row
empty handles x10
+10kg x10
+15kg 5x10

Up at 5am for work tomorrow but off to the panto with the service users, so not all bad.

Your face is a sign of weakness. 7 hours of fever dreams last night, not fun. Especially as they were about competing in strongman events but I was only allowed to use equipment that had been knitted.

f**king dying. I was 97kg on Sunday night, after about 2 solid weeks of gorging, just weighed in at 94kg. That's my usual 1.8kg overnight water loss, and 1.2kg of snot I think.

Training cancelled for the rest of the week. Will restart Smolov next tues.

7.1.14

Weight 92kg

Felt well enough to train today, nose is now clear, still coughing a bit but based on how heavy everything felt I'm not back to 100% strength. Feeling a bit tentative about starting Mag/Ort on thurs. I have however taken delivery of a f**kton of meat. Post workout rump steak today, awesome.

Squats
Warm up empty bar 2x5
40kg x5
60kg x5
80kgx3
110kg 3x5

More difficult than they should have been. Not sure if not used to squat shoes yet or effects of illness. My knees felt great, but my right quad still feels quite tight.

Overhead Squats
10kgx10
15kgx3

Bench
Warm up empty bar 2x5
40kg x5
60kg x3
70kg 6x6

These felt heavy as f**k

Chest Supported Row
empty handles x10
+10kg x10
+20kg 5x10

9.1.14

Whilst my left wrist was hurting all morning because I slept on my wrist/hand like a mong, my Titaniums pulled me through and bench press went fine, starting to feel like my strength is almost back to 100% too.

First Day of Mag/Ort today. That 8+ set is an absolute c**t. Had to get the Nose Tork out for it, and I'm either getting immune to it or at some point I've left it not fully airtight.

Bench Press
warm up
empty bar 2x5
40kg x5
60kg 2x3
75kg 7x5

Deadlift
60kg x5 (double overhand)
100kg x5 (D/O)
140kg x3 (Mixed Grip)
152.5kg 4x4 (MG)
175kg 2x2 (MG)
152.5kg x9 (MG)

On the 140kg set I had a crack to see if I could belt up for it, and see if I could get anything out of it. I couldn't even get down to bar, so that's a no go. Might invest in a deadlift belt at some point, but the powerbelly going might make wearing a normal belt more comfortable too. We'll see.

Nice session. Those MO workouts are hard work. Especially when the weight goes up but they work. I may have to get back on that at some point before April.

DO IT.

10.1.14

Squat
warm up empty bar 2x5
40kg x5
60kg x3
80kg x2
115kg 3x5

All warm up sets I did the last rep as a long pause.

Bench Press
warm up empty bar 2x5
40kg x5
60kg 2x3
70kg x2
80kg 8x4

Kept squat shoes on until 1st set at 60kg, then switched to deadlift slippers. Benching definitely better in flat shoes. Feeling much stronger than yesterday, but my rhomboids kept wanting to cramp.

Chin ups
BW 2x3. Squat shoes back on at this point so it's technically like +800g really.

Wide Grip Lat Pulldown
45kg 3x8

This session (for squats, until I ditched my ipod while benching), for whatever I reason, I mostly kept switching between these 2 songs;

I'm not quite sure what I'm doing with my life.

Team sesh over at Altered's. I like training at altered's as there's more stuff to f**k around with for 'assistance'.

Squat
warm up 2x5 empty bar
60kg x5
100kg x5
120kg 3x5
160kg
180kg

This is the heaviest I've tried since switching into my new shoes. Unfortunately the heel is making me shift my weight onto my toes under high load, but some form work should sort that.

Bench Press
warm up 2x5 empty bar
40kg x5
60kg x3
70kg x2
85kg 10x3

These felt fine. I tried to do as many paused as possible, but for most sets rep 3 was TnG. Rep 3 of set 9 was a grinder, yet set 10 was fine, oddly.

Clean and Jerk
20kg 1x clean, 2x power jerk
20kg 1x clean and power jerk
40kg 1x clean and power jerk

Log clean and press
27kg 1x clean, 2xpress
27kg 3x1 clean and press
47kg 1x clean and press

First go I've really had at log cleans. Pressing is a bit iffy, the 47kg was quite ground out.

'Sprint'

We had to run for the train - it wasn't easy after training, especially seeing as my quads turn most straight cut jeans into skinny jeans.
