I GUESS this applies mainly to bench press, given you can drop a pull or squat, although squat might be taken into account.

Do you guys ever do such things as trying for a max bench or squat without a spotter?
If so, have you had drastic results?

I mostly train on my own - there are occasions I've been forced to call over a 9 stone kid to spot me as I'm a long wolf in a council run gym.

I do and have squatted without a spot for max effort which was probably stupid given the rack I was in.

I want to hear horror stories!!!

Squatting in a rack isn't the same as squatting without spotters!

I never bench heavy without a spotter but...

I never squat heavy WITH a spotter except for the rare times when someone forces me to Unhappy and most of the time I don't squat in a rack either. Nothing bad has ever happened, I failed a squat once and I just took it back to the bottom and jumped forwards while letting go of the bar...

i do that thing where if i fail a bench i roll it onto my hips, sit up with it, grip it and stand up with it. bruises a little but it's perfectly safe for little weights.

this used to be a weekly occurance for me pretty much.

failed a squat once in the rack n lowered it the safeties but got stuck between the floor and the bar still lol.

worst fail iv had was wen i was working in a gym n i used to train wen i opened up as it was dead quiet so its wen i had the time and nobody was using any equipment so didnt need to wait etc.
anyway 1 day i was benching and not paying attention when i went to rack the bar i over shot the racks on 1 side, not realising i wasnt over the racks i went to drop it on n almost ripped my arm out. if id of let the bar go id of been crushed as the other side was still above me, luckily for me it was only a warm up weight (90kg i think) and just managed to pull it in back over to rack it. i swear if it had been 5-10kg heavier or if id of been tired i wudnt of made it n been seriously hurt.

nothing to do with no spotter just my fault for not paying attention, seen as it was a warm up i didnt think i had to focus 100%. lesson learnt even with light weights they can be dangerous

This is the bro-est of the bro of internet horror lifting stories and may be entirely fictional but I heard on more than on occasion of "some guy" who rolled his bench down his body when he got stuck, and ruptured some large artery somewhere

I bench on my own in a rack so just use the pins, same with squats. I need to learn to dump the bar from squats though.

I recall watching that video and reading the news article. At first I thought it was an out of proportion "In Russia" news but the video showed a deep compression when that weight dropped. I felt so bad man, so so bad after watching that.

Suicide grip too wasn't it?

I heard a story of a big body builder over in Keighley who'd been granted permission to use his gym out of hours early on a Sunday morning.

When the owner came in to open up he found the bloke under something like 200kg on the smith machine, dead. This would have been in the late 90's and I can't remember if the guy was crushed or had a heart attack

It's a pimp term for when you stuck your thing inside one of your hoes knowing full well that she had the clap.

"I just risked giving myself a spotty"
