In my (vastly limited) experience - the BMI scale is fine for average joe that spends the majority of his life on the sofa. The only reason its used across the board is just nobody has come up with a version catering for athletes yet and is supposed to be taken with the proverbial pinch of salt.

My BMI recently went into the healthy range. For someone who lifts this is not good news!

BMI is f**ked and has been since it ever came out!

At 6ft 4 and 136kg stone, apparently I'm an obese t**t and needs to be taken out and shot Grin

I train my ass off at the gym, lift hard and heavy and walk everywhere (probably cover 10-15miles a week easy)!

I'm happy, so f**k em all... Wink

The lass has a big deadlift, good on her... Like others have said; it's better than her sitting round, doing feck all and gaining more mass!!!

Women naturally have more fat than men, hormones the complete opposite way, and they often don't take the 'supplements' that the men do = not rippling with muscles, just really strong

I am in the process of cutting fat now.

This is going to sound harsh, but unless someone is doing very well in a strength sport and on the verge of breaking records, why be fat??

Nobody surely wants to be fat if they can be otherwise. I would rather be 90kg, total 550 and run 10k any given day. I have a 36 inch waist now and I would rather go back to 32 and be a little beta weakling who can run fast and have decent overall fitness.

Each to their own, but f**k being fat, unless you're hitting alpha weights and I certainly am not.

even if you are moving big weights it's pointless carrying excess fat.
imagine how much stronger you could be leaner at same bw?

I guess unless you're a SHW. I joined a gym to get in shape after a bad eye injury stopped me kickboxing. I don't know why I allowed myself to get fat. I didn't even get stronger. Just fatter!

.

This doesn't sound harsh, but it does seem bonkers to me. Why be a skinny 80kg if you could be a formidable 100kg? Id far rather be my current chunky 125kg than a lean 105kg.

Depends on the person. I definitely would rather be lean and athletic. I'm not competitive in strength sports, it's just a hobby and I enjoy trying to lift half heavy as much as I enjoy running. Competitive lifters will be different.

Would you not rather be a lean 125kg though?

No offence but that's a load of horses**t. Weight training and increased muscle mass greatly reduces the risk of type2 diabetes!!

I understand the angle you are coming from. However, I'd have to disagree with you to an a certain extent...but I respect your thinking and clearly you are not stupid.

As a biologist (a proper one, not just someone with a degree who gleans information from google) I would like to offer my perspective, and the reason I'd like to offer it is because I wouldn't like to think you are complacent about your health status (although I'm not saying you have anything to worry about either).

The positive correlation between being heavy and stroke and heart disease risk is absolutely real. Correlations don't necessarily show cause an effect, many confounding factors can influence the correlation (e.g. fat people may be more likely to smoke).

The appropriate question to ask is.... does the risk only apply to individuals who are heavy due to high body fat, or does it apply to those who are heavy due to large muscle mass? The discussion around that is a bit complicated, but in general the evidence does point to large amounts of muscle mass being a risk factor..and there are a variety of reasons for that as well including further confounding factors. However, there are clearly also some heath promoting factors of muscle as well.

So, it isn't a black and white issue...but it isn't safe to assume you are safe from health risk factors because your heavy weight is due to muscle mass.

You are right to point out that the BMI isn't gospel.

All this coming from someone who calls himself 'StevenFatty'
