Ok so bit of a controversial topic. But just going from comps I have done, and other results of late... I notice there are some people who do not train traditional strongman events at all, and are better than others who devote their life to it.

Lads turned up to the Unit 20 first timers who hadn't touched a yoke or axle before but beat those who trained for months. And similar such instances can be found right across the board.

Now, common sense says training the events is very important, but are these people just freaks then, or what?

Comparing abilities at a first timers comp isnt really valid is it?

I think event practise definately helps, theres no doubt for the technical aspect but overall strength training should take up most of your time in the gym.

At a first timers/novice level you may be able to get away with it.
Once you step up to lift in your respective weight class then if you still choose to neglect events training you'll not get very far IMO.

Could you imagine Terry or Loz going to WSM without training the events beforehand, it just wouldn't happen.

I'd go as far as to say the opposite.

When I was training events often I was much better at them than my comparable gym lifts. (farmers, yoke, stones etc vs squat, deadlift etc)

Yes

Every guy I know who trains farmers/yoke regularly is good at them

Guys who dont train regularly, some are good, some not so

You will get better at something if you train it frequently

There's strongman strong, and there's strong.
Some people will always be good/great at certain events with minimal training, some people will never reach their level even with a lot of dedicated practise.
You shouldn't rush to try and get better too much at events without establishing a good base of allround strength and athleticism first (I did this), as that means minimal progress in all areas. Events should complement your allround strength training, and as you progress or competitions get closer focus more on certain events.
Most events are mirrored by certain gym lifts and are results of training those for the most part, there are some people who train ONLY events, and there are people who train certain events minimally and can still perform at a very good level, but they should be seen as the exceptions rather than the rule.
If I want to do a fast 300k yoke, I won't get there anytime soon by just trying to run with a 300k yoke. If I want to do a 140k log, I will certainly not get there by attempting a 140k log. So it makes sense to train events in a sensible manner rather than bashing your head against a brick wall where there is an obvious weakness.

First timers was just an example.... by no means exclusive like I said I have seen these happen right across the spectrum of comps.

I feel better training some events eg Farmers and Yoke improve By training(IMO) but I don't think you have to go mad every other week alternate one week yoke one farmers for instance.

Deffo! Really felt I would have done better today If I'd been nailing events. I cant really understand an argument against it to be honest. Practice makes perfect...

I'd use Macca as an example, if he got his arse in (on?) gear and trained events more instead of just squatting ( which he is pretty good at already)then I think he would smash U90k comps more so than he does alreadyGrin

As most people know I overtrain events and under train gym, but I think the odd high weights I can do on say farmers compared to my shot deadlift just shows that training events works, but don't do what I do and neglect the basics! Good all round spread but if your a strongman you need to train events no questions asked imo and yes Macca need to get to his local strongman centre (mine lol) and smash those events, then conquer the world : )
