Thanks for the interesting replies. Having someone sneak plates on is probably the way forward for me.

I have tried the visualisation stuff, but it doesn't work for me. I cant seem to do it. I will dream about the lift all week if I have a set goal for a session in mind, and always hit it in the dream, which makes the fail on the day more dissapointing.

I do agree that partials help confidence with the weight, and make the weight seem a smaller number.

Do you also find milestone numbers are often worse? I often find that a once I get a milestone lift out of the way then it goes up a bit quite quickly after that

I prefer background music, than headphones. Usually AC/DC or The Ramones. Really get's me fired up.

our gym has 3 s**t cds on a permanent loop so def not working. i pop mine in while im getting ready for lift, chalk, salts belt etc and then straight in do my reps and then ear phones out till next time

linkin park, chase and status, eminem, rocky and lost prophets providing the fire

being totally honest i am mentally very strong and confident, in fact i may be the opposite, my mind may be stronger than my body lol

100kg bench, 200kg deadlift, these 2 took 6month - 1yr to overcome. You cannot trick yourself into it, you have to believe in it through and through. Its not something that can be manufactured, you have to want it, be zoned and go for it.

Mental focus and belief plays a huge part

well there was a reason they called me Emo...

now, I dunno, I'm definately better, I think more than anything my expectations are higher, I used to just approach each lift the same way I approached comps, as though I was there to make up the numbers and have a nice time. I don't do that any more

alot of the time i used to add random weights to the bar , like 10 a couple of 1.25's then a few 2.5's and dnt count them , then add a 20 , next add another random array , helps loose count and just lift, had a few 4kg and 7.5kg plates.

that helped

then i stopped ... Roll-Eyes Roll-Eyes

Yeah that's cool, 2 questions.

What's the name of the welsh body builder who he was talking too? Think he lifts if the bw restricted class rather than the opens (if it's called that)

And does anyone know where the name europa comes from if it's been held in the USA? I may be missing something very obvious here

The mind is a funny thing.

When I used to do farmer's dead lifts they felt harder than picking up the same weight when doing a walk! I started telling myself porky pies about going for a walk after doing the pick-up!

Power cleans can sometimes feel easier if I'm pressing afterwards too!

building confidence with weight by doing partials, band assistance etc really helps me get past mental blocks. For example a 140kg bench used to scare me, and even unracking it I'd struggle with, now I've been doing 170kg board presses and I know 140 will go when I try it.
