I am pretty sure there are plenty others on here that get the same problem, but wonered if any have found practical ways round it.

Basically, as weights get heavier, I think to much about the weight, and fail the lift. A couple of kg less is often very easy, but my head wont let me put the effort in on the heavy one.

Last night was a prime example. I failed a max squat attempt, went down 11kg for an easy double, then decided to look away, and let my training partner (Thing) put whatever on the bar, and I would just go and lift it.

I didn't look at the weights, had no idea what I was lifting, and hit a very very easy PB that felt easily 30kg less than it was.

Why does this happen? I always lift better when I dont know what something weighs, and any ideas what I can do about it?

Im very often defeated by a deadlift before I even walk up to the bar.

I know some people use "positive visualisation" (or something similar), basically just imagining yourself succesfully performing the rep before you approach the bar. Ive been trying to do this recently, and im pretty sure Terry Hollands does this too.

I normally try to forget comp weights after I sign up for a comp as I seem to do better knowing I have to shift something heavy rather than the actual weight.

similarly i visualize making the lift.

in fact last july i was going for a 200kg deadlift, i failed it and a bloke came over who had worked in sport psychology. he said that i could definitely make the lift. and told me to leave the bar on the floor, for a few minutes and get away from it (not look at it, stand over it etc,) and to keep warmed up, to put any excuses out of my head and just visualize making the lift, then to go over and attack the lift fast. i did this and made the lift easy. so thats what i do now

Davy, i have went from easyish lift and adding not so much to the bar, to epic fail too many times. So much so that c**t maca has taken to sneaking 2.5's or 5's on the bar when im not looking and more often than not i get a pleasent surprise. Tho my body is weak my head is weaker!

Davy hopeful now that were going to be training together more mt tactic will be the same as Macca's Grin

out it like this i believed i could deadlift 200kgs again and i did and then 220 and then 230, and that all with the though of is the back going to go.
all you need to think is get it shifted from A to B and that its going to be easy. i dont think about the weights as much as i use to before i got Glass Back Syndrome.

so i think we'll be working on your approach

About the half the time, when I try to psych up, I psych myself out and end up defeated before I even start.
I try to calm down instead, sort of tell yourself it's done before you start, make it feel inevitable, then at the last second get a little bit angry.

Partials help.

A lot of it is getting accustomed to the idea of lifting heav(ier) than you have done in the past. You can get stuck in the mindset of 'these are my lifts' but set goals, get comfortable with the idea of lifting heavier numbers than you are now.

And yeah partials help a lot.
