I believe the 220kg bench, not quite so sure about that 350kg pull.

A few mates of mine at Uni played for Sale and all had stories of his lifting and my best mate has watched him bench 200kg in person in the Total Fitness in Wilmslow. Sale used it for a while. My mate was England U18 Captain at the time.

There was an interview in Rugby World where he talks of him training for powerlifting before rugby took over. Its also widely accepted that he's the strongest player in the premiership which isnt exaclty short of beasts.

TBh, having a big bench is no use what so ever for playing rugby...

But upper body strength is important. Pressing helps develop upper body strength.

Do you need 220kg of raw bench strength to play rugby? Probably not.

Completely agree about the need for upper body strength Iain, and benching does help that. However, I don't think that using the bench numbers as a proxy for all around upper body strngth is valid IMO. In 20+ years of playing rugby I have never used a bench pressing type movement on the pitch!!

ME!

Shot putters are proper athletes. The finnish shot putter put away monster lift numbers.

Lifting myths abound - if it ain't on the platform, I ain't interested.

There's loads of gear in rugby by the way - less since I retired of course.

no doubt, but there's a guy called Garrett Johnson at Oxford Uni who's a shot putter on team B USA with a 20.4m throw (for comparison purposes the guy who won the shot putt at this year's Olympics got 21.5 or thereabouts and the majority of competitors threw 20-21m ).

I've seen him bench press (in fact he's worked in with me several times) and I must say his benching isn't impressive. I can rep 120 better than he can and with better form and I weigh about 50kg less than him.

I've also seen him fall over with 200kg on his back attempting to squat it which is a pretty shabby for a 140kg Olympic standard shot putter.

I know this is just an individual example and some of you will respond with 'I've seen athlete X squat 200kg for 10reps on one leg..' but I've seen this guy's weights sessions and they're really not that impressive.

Just take what you read or hear about the weights room exploits of sportsmen and women with a pinch of salt is all I'm saying.

Its all about power/speed guys....The field events athletes "winter" train heavy but taper off for the rest of the year.Rugby players also.
For example ...Winter time. Heavy squats then tapering down to light squat jumps on/off boxes etc.So they do not maintain the consistancy powerlifters do.Sometimes when say they have an injury and for example cant run they sometimes step it up benching or some other lift and that is when very often a good lift is recorded.
As already stated a good few would be a threat to us all if they really got involved.

Shot putters tend to be very strong statically. My mate (who is a shot putter) has a strong bench & squat, and he informs me that Myerscough is a beast when it comes to the PL events!
