Pagan has asked me to post this for him from his journal..

NORTHERN U105K QUALIFIER

Had a leisurely 2hr drive over to Lancaster and treated myself to a McDonalds breakfast. This is customary but normally I need to weigh in first at U90k comps.

While even after the biggest breakfast there was never any danger of me being over the 105k limit I did weigh in at 99.2K! Now this was fully clothed so I think/hope I'm about 96k naked and unfed. I should be able to make 90k without too many probs

MAX LOG

This was always going to be my worst event. I'm s**t at overhead and log in particular even at U90k so I knew I'd be right down the bottom and possibly dead last.My PB is 105k so the opening lift of 100k was very doable and I'd been doing it in training on a regular basis. Thankfully despite making a meal of the clean and feeling light headed I managed to 'ugly up' the opening lift.
I was in two minds about even bothering to try the next lift of 110k but magic happens at comps and you just never know... turns out I should have saved my energy as f**k all magic was seen in my logging today

100k lifted - 2nd last

108K x 4 SANDBAG LOADING

I'd managed all four very slowly the one time I tried it in training but it had nearly killed me so I was a bit nervous about this event despite it being the sort of thing I normally do well at. As I'd done so s**t at log I was up second and didn't get any chance to way up the pro's and cons of various techniques from watching others. Thankfully they went up fairly well and in retrospect I wish I'd attacked them a bit more quickly instead of worrying about gassing.

4 bags in ? Seconds - top 10?

CAR DEADLIFT

I find car deadlift much worse than conventional pulls but considering most of my competition were 300k+ deadlifters it was largely irrelevant.I got 8 reps in the end which TBH I was happy with and I couldn't have got another regardless of how I@d paced myself etc.

8reps - Top 15?

TYRE FLIP INTO 125Kx20M FARMERS WALK

Again my sort of event but I'd needed two pick ups on the farmers in training and in today's company's a decent placing was never going to be easy.

The tyre flips went well but despite Niall's insistence that people were losing time setting up for the farmers I couldn't get my drop in training out of my mind so I paused a second or two and re-chalked etc. As it was I never felt like dropping the farmers and maybe could have jumped straight in.

31 seconds? -top 6?

SLED DRAG

Everyone was getting stressed watching this event being set up as loaders were struggling to move the sled and we had a harness malfunction on one side.
Thankfully Mike Howarth blasted the full distance in the first heat and proved it could be done.
After a while it became apparent to me that everyone pulling on the side closest the crowd seemed to be doing better. Being the wiley old fox (c**t?) that I am I asked the lad I was going against if he had a preference of which side he took. I didn't tell him I had a coin in my pocket ready to flip for it had he expressed a preference. He said he wasn't bothered so I took full advantage!

If your reading mate , I do apologise for this and for not remembering your name but I think you beat in the overall comp anyway

Brutal event but I finished the distance with Jnr walking alongside shouting me on the full distance.

? seconds - top 10?

STONES

The running order of this event was based on your overall standing in the comp. I kept listening for my name as Ben called the order out and couldn't believe how many people he called before me. I thought I was as high as tenth from what I'd heard but Steve Baker collared me told me I was actually sixth! At U90K Stones is supposed to be my event but I knew that at U105k there were a lot of lads who could wipe the floor with me.

If I'm honest I did feel quite confident of maintaining my 6th place however ironically despite a decent enough run of four stones including a 160k to 48"? I didn't finish in the top 6 of this event.

4 stones in ? seconds - top 10?

Listening to the list of names called out before me in the final line up was surreal. I won't name names as it doesn't feel right but there were some lads who I'd looked up to all my time in strongman called out before me.

Part of me is proud and part of me feels a fraud as I can;t help feeling a unique series of freak events lead to this anomaly.

? points - 8th Overall!

Really pleased to see Robbo nail a well deserved win and do so in style by being the only person to load all 5 stones.

Apparently some guy called JC came second. I'm told he's usually crap and this was a real upset ...over the f**king moon for James, back to where he belongs and more tha deserved

Great comp and big thanks to Ben, Hixxy , JC , Niall and everyone else who helped put it on!

Sorry of this write up is going down hill fast but I'm trying to polish of these cans before my Chinese arrives!

Another great comp today Ben. You always put on a great show and I very much look forward to it every year.

I had a disastrous deadlift event (26th place!) and a couple of sub-par events. This, along with a couple of seconds here and there (in a very tight field), meant I missed out on qualification this year. No excuses - just not good enough.

Robbo dominated and won by a large margin - as we all knew he wouldWink

So pleased to see my main man JC smash it up and get second place nailed before stones! Consistency in a big field is what it's all about, and that's exactly what he did.

Will pop into everyone's journal who competed when I get a chance...

I am honestly gutted you didn't do yourself justice dude, there is no doubt in my mind that you are not the worst deadlifter in that field to deserve 0 points, and I can see how that deficit would make anything overall impossible to achieve. another notch on the blade, learn something new every time.
