Thanks, Rick. I've no idea what it's doing there either, I just typed the first thing that came into my head.

Friday

I'm 49 tomorrow, and man do I feel it. s**t session. TVs in gym turned up full blast in case I can't hear f**king autotuned popc**ts and f**king adverts for dogfood and short-term loans at APR 4 million percent.

Couldn't hold onto the bar for deadlifts with 202.5kg, had to resort to straps. Miscalculated the poundages on 5-3-1 program. Hurt my chest on bench press and could only get a s**tty six reps out of 132.5 - I was doing sets of five three weeks ago.

Never mind, I'm off to Paris in two days. I anticipate Parisians wilfully not understanding my broken French.

Deadlifts

Warm ups
150 X 5
170 X 3
202.5 X 3!
f**king straps
202.5 X 6

Stiff-legged deadlifts

120 X 6
130 X 6
130 X 6

Bench Press

Warm ups
90 X 5
110 x 3
132.5 X 6

Close grip bench press

100 X 7
105 X 7
105 X 6

That's what they do, unlike virtually everybody else in France in my experience who are nice to anybody who gives it a decent try...

Happy birthday!

Yes, my experience too, Rick, in the rest of France, they're lovely. It's that big city thing.

Another forum I'm on has this as their April challenge: pick a weight and squat 100 reps with it in an hour. Any variation, any combination of sets and reps. I fancied doing something a bit different, so I tried it. Decided to try 140kg. I'm sure there are plenty on here who could do this for 10 X 10, but I'm not one of them.

I chose full back squats. All were well below parallel - they actually got lower as time went on. I certainly couldn't have done it without a belt and knee sleeves. I'm gpoing to write all these out, just for the hell of it.

Squats

Started 11:22.

140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4
140 X 4

These ten sets took thirteen minutes. Break at 11:35 for five minutes. Fours were getting tough, so I went down to threes:

140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3
140 X 3

Another 16 minutes to do these ten. Halfway through, I was seriously doubting I would make it. Couldn't manage any more threes after this - had to go down to twos.

140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2
140 X 2

Finished at 12:15.

Verdict

It was not 53 minutes I would care to repeat. My neck is raw from the bar slipping on the sweat. I had problems driving home and I've just had to shuffle up the stairs on my arse, because I can't really walk. Everything hurts.

Pointless but weirdly satisfying.

You're going to have a very very sore weekend, I suspect Happy. Kudos for the insanity and for sticking with it.

Sunday

There have been two days of walking like a terminally damaged robot. The DOMS from that squat challenge have been spectacular.

Not a promising start to the workout, as before I even got to the gym, my hamstring went into spasm on the stairs in my house, and I had to be rescued by Mrs. T. Lower body work was out of the question, but I managed some bench press and standing press. Standing press was poor: two reps down from last cycle, but maybe it was because I did bench press first, instead of on a separate workout. If not, I'm going backwards on 5-3-1.

Pulldowns

75 X 5
80 X 5
85 X 5
90 X 5
95 X 4

Bench Press

Warm ups
90 X 5
107.5 X 5
122.5 X 10

Strict standing press

60 X 5
70 X 5
80 X 5

Thursday

Well, it's taken six days, but the DOMS from the squat challenge have finally disappeared. My back and hamstrings are still feeling vulnerable, however, so I missed any lower body work.

Pleased with my progress on pressing movements following a disappointing showing last session. I think 80 X 8 is probably a PB for me on strict press. I think it's probably down to a herculean effort on the last three reps, however, rather than my strength going up.

Top set on bench felt light as a feather today - which, to be fair, it is.

Strict overhead press

Warm ups
60 X 5
70 X 5
80 X 8

Bent over rows

Warm ups
97.5 X 5
97.5 X 5
97.5 X 5
97.5 X 5
97.5 X 5

Bench Press

Warm ups
90 X 5
107.5 X 5
122.5 X 10

Close grip bench press

105 X 7
105 X 5

Tuesday

Mediocre session. My strength doesn't seem to be going up on this program.

No lower body work since the squat challenge - this is partly due to the annoying opening times at the gym - shut for four days last week (and will be shut again on Friday and Monday).

I was hoping for 130 X 8 on bench and 82.5 X 8 on press - not to be on either.

Strict standing press

Warm ups
65 X 3
75 X 3
82.5 X 6

Bent over rows

Warm ups
100 X 5
100 X 5
100 X 5
100 X 5
100 X 5

Bench Press

Warm ups
100 X 3
115 X 3
130 X 7
