Your squatting shows improvement from the first video, maby lots of stretching will help you get lower.

That is a nice home gym, get yourself a log and a sandbag and possibly some farmers and a few kegs, axle & a few stones then you have a realy nice gym!Grin

When i train at my friends house he only has the standard bar, the weights dont rotate like on a olympic bar its actualy like a mini axle. i lose about 10kg on my overhead lifting useing a standard bar. Deadlifting also bizarely is affected as well (plus when you hit 190kg on a standard bar it will bend like a bas***d).

That's a good idea, cos at the moment I can't honestly tell when I've made the depth. I shall start training with 'Brush Botty Box Squats' starting Saturday Grin

Next question, I'm 5'9" and not hideously out of proportion, what sort of height would you recommend, or just experiment until I have my thighs just beyond parallel?

I didn't even know olympic bars rotated, mine sure don't. In fact I've never even seen one for real, let alone used one.

Now I have another question. I don't think I'm far off trying 190/200 on a deadlift - perhaps a month or two - so what happens when one of these things breaks? Do they bend in half or snap? I guess what I'm asking is, am I going to lose my hands!? Happy

This is the one i made - 11.5 x 13.5 inches, mabie you can sit on the wifes head and take some sort of guage measurment, and go from there Grin

http://www.leyland25.freeserve.co.uk/gym/newbox.jpg

here is my 231kg deadlift with my standard plates - the bar bends - i think when they 'go' they just bend in the middle, no snapping*

*disclaimer should your chin be taken clean off.

edit: robs handywork is brought into question - i think the 'w's in the link cause it problems

replace the * with a w , if you have the energy or inclination

If you have some money to spend then a eliko bar or ivanko would rock.

I wish I did have the money to spare atm. Thanks for the advice though cos I will definitely be looking to get a good make when I have got the money.

Tuesday 29th Mai
DL: 90 x 6, 140 x 5, 160 x 5, 160 x 5, 170 x 4. 4-5mins rest between.
Widegrip chins: BW x 3 x 8. 2 mins rest between
BB rows: 58 x 3 x 8. 2mins rest between
BB curls: 34 x 3 x 8. 2mins rest between

Was pretty happy to get those 4 170kg deadlifts in at the end. Was going for 5 but the 4th was such a grind that I didn't attempt the 5th. Didn't plan on even trying to put in a set of 170s but was feeling frisky so figured why not!

Wednesday 30th May

Absolutely pissing it down outside and as much as I enjoy jogging around there's no way I'm doing it in that. So, on the elliptique bike thingy for 30mins. 1min jogging pace and then 1min balls to the wall pace. I was almost dead at the end. It's been a while since I've used the bike and while it isn't as 'hard' as running it's still a killer depending on how you approach it. Good stuff Happy

Cheers. Yeah I can do drizzle, but this stuff would have made my head bleed Wink

Thursday 31st May

Bench: 51 x 6, 61 x 5, 73 x 5 (cos I misloaded the bar) and then 83 x 5 x 5. 3mins rest between.
Dips: BW+8 x 8. 2mins rest between
DB press: 21 x 8 x 3. 2mins rest
Push downs: 25 x 8 x 3. 2mins rest

Making steady progress on the benching so happy enough with that. Also I've now incorporated a sneaky extra session of benching on a Sunday, so I'll start to log that too. Basically it's fewer reps with heavier weight just to mix it up a bit.

Friday 1st June

Ran a slow 9km at 5:46m/km pace. Feeling sluggish going round and have decided it must be because I'm not fueling enough beforehand. So starting on Monday I'm going to be eating some compote or similar before I go out to make sure I've got at least something in there working for me. Something's got to change because I'm feeling pretty s**t about my running atm.

Sunday 3rd June

Botty squats*: 91 x 5, 91 x 5 (see video), 121 x 5, 121 x 5, 121 x 5 (see video). 4mins between each set.
Leg curls: 50 x 3 x 8. 2mins rest
calf raises: 111 x 3 x 8. 2mins rest
leg raises: 3 x 8. 2mins rest
Bench press: 71 x 5, 87 x 3, 90 x 3, 94 x 2, 100kg x 1 PB!

* Botty squats are where the botty is meant to simply brush the box rather than rest on it. Not sure what else to call them and since the mighty boar referred to the botty just brushing the box I figured it was as good a name as any Happy

91 x 5 botty squats

121 x 5 botty squats

As you can see I ended up stacking 10 little pallets up to make the 'box'. It measures exactly 12" high and seems to put my thigh just under parallel. I missed it on one of those 121kg reps but then I'm still getting used to this.

Overall though I'm really happy with my workout today. I was feeling perky even at the end of my workout so attempted the 100kg bench and, even though I say so myself, it was a decent rep. I didn't exactly pause, but I didn't bounce it of the chest either. It was a nice steady rep without much of a grind, and it was a PB! Reckon I won't be long before I'm managing more on that.

They are bang on the money for me neil, using the box to guage depth rather than to sit on and temporarily 'take the load off' is what i usually did, and botty squats is what they are !

nice bench Pb to round off a good day

That squat form is massively improved from the last videos you put up, nice one! Well done on the 100 bench as well, nice little landmark.

Training is going very nicely mate, keep it up.
