Just heard about this unfortunate event at a crossfit comp;

http://www.crossfitinvictus.com/blog/our-thoughts-and-prayers-...
http://therxreview.com/kevin-ogar-suffers-serious-injury-at-oc...

Apparently Ogar dropped the bar on his back severing his spinal cord Eek
There is of course this 'possibility' anytime someone performs a snatch or heavy overhead lift. But something tells me that the event being a 3RM snatch from the floor has something to do with it.

Strongman tends to have a rep for being dangerous, but is it ever this dangerous?

Well I reckon that strongman has more of a chance of an injury like dropping a log on your head, although obviously it happened to a crossfitter which is so unlucky to do so much damage, or tearing a bicep but I think there's alot more risk of overuse injuries with crossfit from form breakdown during high rep stuff.

That was a bit of a freak accident!

Rock Tape wont fix that one.......too soon?

Crossfit isnt too bad in some ways but there are a few things which are just plain crazy, like atlas stone squats, where you have to shoulder a stone, roll it to the back of your neck and squat. What happens if you fall foward, going to be hard to get out of the way of that stone!

I think strongman is more dangerous simply due to the higher weights involved.
Simply going through Sugden and looking at all the past and present injury posts would confirm that.

The Kevin Ogar incident really is a freak accident. Pretty much like the Wayne Rainey Moto Gp crash, it was something that happens hundreds of times and in that one instance all the odds combined to give a s**t result.

Freak accident. But stupid, stupid programming for that CF competition and many others. Dumping a 100+kilo snatch is a split second decision, a matter of centimetres. When your mind and body are already toast from 7 grueling events, bad things can happen.

Agreed with the above, it was a freak accident.

From what I've read on the internet he is a decent and experienced weightlifter. It was on the first rep.

He dropped the bar behind him probably just clearing himself which hit a stack of plates behind him and then fired back into his lower back.

This is just what I've read from people who claim to have been there so very much a freak accident bit helped by the silly programming.

Doing a 3RM snatch is not in any way dangerous. I regularly do triples in my training. Doing a 3RM snatch when already fatigued, I feel, is asking for trouble. Movement patterns and reactions are likely to be impaired resulting in a bigger risk of injury.

However, this is a freak accident. I've dropped at least a couple of snatches directly onto my neck over the years, Matteus Steiner dropped 190+ on his neck at the last Olympics and still awalked away, Ben66 has done it.........probably hundreds of oly lifters have done it yet walked away unscathed. This guy very unfortunately just hit the jackpot on the reverse lottery.

Reading about him not having medical insurance makes me so thankful that we have the NHS.

Yea but people have already raised over $180k for him.

So the lesson is, save money by not getting insurance and others will pay for you when you get injured...

Get injured without insurance. Insurance will only pay out a certain amount. You'll get enough to retire with adequate marketing.

The guy is paraplegic for life now with a severed spine. To be fair I don't think $180k will cover his long term health care etc, so the guy is quite phucked....

here's the video - looks like the bar bounced off the plates behind him... Seems like a dangerous setup with the lack of space to dump etc

How much would spinal surgery cost? I wouldn't be surprised if this spunked half that money. Then time spent in hospital, physio costs, general care costs. I reckon that money would be gone within a few months. People are unlikely to donate time after time after time to cover ongoing lifelong costs.

Since American doesn't have a national health service in the way that we do, I would imagine their medical insurance provides cover in a more similar way to travel insurance policies provide medical expenses cover outside of the UK, rather than how private medical insurance plans provide it. This would likely mean that the cover has liability levels running into the £1,000,000's. It's unlikely that he could market his story this effectively.

In addition to this, he's unlikely to have any form of long term income protection cover in place so if he can't return to work he will have no discernible income, aside from state handouts, forever more. He will then have to rely on a minimum state pension since he won't have been able to make any voluntary personal pension payments.

Unless he manages so make a full recovery this guy is f**ked!!!

Saying you shouldn't bother with insurance or you could replace the need for insurance with clever marketing of a sad story is both ridiculous and crass.

Looking at the vid he's very unlucky. Doesn't look like a back breaking accident.
