big log clean = big stones?

I would say the log clean is the closest lift to stones without doing stones. training stones is a pain in the arse to thats what id do instead.

Barrel / sandbag loading or shouldering would be my choice if I didn't have access to stones and or didn't want to get up to my eyes in tacky.

it you wanna get better at stones... do stones and get stronger in the gym?

if you dont want to get tackied, use the collar of an old bar? and put some tape/material on your arms and it grips the rubber of the plates near enough as well as tacky on concrete.

Depends on you style of stone lifting, some guys use a long pull approach to lap the weight the resembles something similar to a stiff leg deadlift and others use a row movement where they hunch over the stone and pull it to the chest using their lats and arms and sit back with the weight.

You have a good point, so extra exercises for stones could be platform deads and grip work. what type of grip work would you say has a good carry over to stones?

Heavy wrist curls would maybe help?

To improve stone gripping strength.... practise lifting stones!!

Another idea... dare I say it... sometimes train without tacky? (I'm going to get flooded with bicep tear comments now!!)

Wayne I don't think tackyless stones is a bicep buster!

Iv done 160kg stone without tacky to 55inch!

If your technique isn't to sloppy I don't think your in danger!

I only train stones occasionally, but I trained without tacky for a long time and never felt any strain in my biceps.

I love stone lifting. Actually going to give a go at a 483lbs stone at a comp this Saturday (it's a bonus stone after the series).

Spend very little time doing heavy stones, maybe once every few months. Most of the time it's extension drills (load to 57", load to 65" and then 73" is one set) or speed singles/doubles (usually no tack). Sometimes go for heavy singles no tack too (385lbs my best so far and next stone up is 427lbs haha). Rarely do reps. Lowest platform I load to in training is 51.5" (we do have a 44" but it's rarely used, only for heavy series or getting used to a new heavy stone). I'll also do keg loading too. I like reps for these.

Most of my stone training is gym based. The bear hug plate lift for reps was great when I didn't have access to stones (went from 330lbs to 405lbs in 8 months). I did these for sets of 8 one motioning it. Most I did was 301lbs. Other good exercises have been safety squat bar goodmornings, safety squat bar back extensions, rack pulls against a lot of band tension (200-300lbs), cheat style wide grip rows, cheat style rear delt raises, box squats, zercher squats or rack lifts, 6" platform deadlifts, snatch grip deadlifts and stiff legged sumo deadlifts. Don't get much out of front squats (365lbs for 2 but I've done a 435lbs stone to 54").

EDIT: I am 6'7" so take my advice with a grain of salt haha.
