Do you ever feel like you just cant be arsed with the whole work thinganymore and lifes too short to work all week just to pay bills and have a little bit left for fun?

Working is a mugs game, especially working for someone else, selling them your precious time to make them more money...I never saw the logic in that.
There are very very few employees who are rich, most of the rich people are employers.

Work till you make some money, then put the money to work for you.

I'm glad you just started this i've been having similar thoughts, and im only 21.

I work with my dad and he's trying to push our 2 man business but the more i think the more it depresses me i could be having to work 60 hour weeks to make it a success.

Sometimes i think these tribes that just hunt and smoke weed have the best way of living.

There are a lot of jobs where being an employee can earn a lot of money, it depends if you want to be a run of the mill normal person in a normal job or actually strive to be better.

Obviously you have a steady job and aren't struggling to pay bills.

When I was living with my parents, I was in my teens and doing 60-70hrs a week. I once went 60 days without a day off, then one day off then 50 more. I remember sitting on the bus at 5am in the dark, almost burst into tears thinking what the fk am I doing with my life. I've just started a new job and HAVE to in order to pay the bills.

Confucious once said "Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life." I loved my job but I still work. Changed jobs and just got a little lucky in the fact that they're paying for travel and food. On the flipside, I'll still barely be paying bills and will be moving in with my parents, plus the job is only for 2-3 months.

Life sucks, but I respect ANYBODY who works to pay bills, no matter what their job is. I don't have respect for people that are able to work and don't because they can scrounge off the government instead.

I guess it just depends what makes each of us happy.
Some people would be happy earning less but doing something they enjoy.
I've always beleived if you aren't happy, change it, we're only here once after all.

I'm a good example to be honest.
My company used to be quite big - £2,5m annual turnover - but I was stressed to f**k and not really happy. My bills were almost £20,000 a month, so I was constantly pushing myself and my staff to hit their targets.
Last year I got rid of all but one of my staff and let go of the fancy town centre premises, cutting my overheads to less than a quarter of what they used to be.
I'm nowhere near as busy but I am far less stressed and my quality of life is a hundred times better - my blood pressure has dropped from 178/100 to 122/78 !!!
I'm working an average of ten hours per week, very laid back, and the happiest I have ever been.

Are you still working in the chippy? I remembered you when I was typing out this post. I know people with TWO G.C.S.Es that have a healthy salary, and some who are well educated who work for a pittance.

i've worked there for the 7 years and was content on s**tty pay for a while but grew out of it. spent the last 3 years at uni to go into teaching for a more secure and better job. i still work there outside of term time though, gotta earn some pennies to spend on nights out!

I suppose that depends on your definition of "a lot of money".
My salesman earned about £40k, which many would consider a decent income, particularly in this area.
Certainly as an employee I never earned that - I have had some incredibly s**t jobs in my time, £2.44 per hour doing 12 hour shifts in a chocolate factory springs to mind !
At the end of the day no employer will pay an employee any more than he has to.
But to be honest I think I am the kind of person who would never be happy working for someone else.

How did you raise the money Dan to set up your business? I'm assuming it took some serious initial capital?

I currently own a business which my Mrs operates but it only required £1500 initial capital. (It's turnover is 320k PA Now though the profit conversion is ridiculously low Unhappy )

I'm looking to buy a second property at the moment too so I can rent out my current home.

I plan on being completely self employed by end of 2014. (Age 35)
