Hi everyone, anyone torn their knee meniscus? Experiences?

I've done mine whilst working on Monday, doing a pistol squat of all things.

It sucks. Injuries always come just as everythings going well which hurts even more!

Yeah ive had a torn meniscus, first they thought it was soft tissue, x-ray saw some water on the knee so had a MRI which then they found it, but they cant apparently tell how bad it is until they operate on it. I had key hole surgery if its next to a blood supply they might staple it together which promotes healing on its on, if it has no blood supply they will trim away the tear or cut it out if its bigger. Recovery time isnt too bad i think i was training light 8 weeks after surgery no deadlifts or squats thought for quite awhile

Thanks for the responses Happy

Ryan - did you notice it go? What happened over the next few days/weeks post incident?

Obviously I won't get in for surgery or scans in the very near furture. I'm mostly concerned about not being able to work.

Injured knees are the worst !!

I had to stop everything when I ruptured my patella tendon and almost tore my ligaments !

Had several scans but nhs obviously ain't the best!

Try and push them so it call goes nice and smooth!

I had to weight over 3months for MRI results! It just made things worse!

Good luck with recovery mate!

Sorry to hear that.

I suffered from a bucket handle tear to my medial meniscus (diagnosed by a physio).

Couldn't squat for 4-5 months and even to this day I can't squat raw still.

Meniscus injuries are the worst because of the poor blood supply. I've been told they hardly heal completely.

You may wish you hadn't asked dude. Get to the docs ASAP and see how soon you can have it scanned or whatever. Hopefully it won't be as bad as others experiences.

I had a lateral tear on my right meniscus the pain went for the day to day stuff after about 3 weeks I never stopped working and I have a manual job. I caused mine by riding a broke push bike. I stopped squating and jerking overhead and training was fine I did sugdens strongest man 2 and lancasters comp with the tear. As for recovery I was back in the gym 2 days after op, running 2 weeks post op and pbing on deadlift 6weeks. Sorry if I have rambled on I haven't slept in a while. If you want shoot me a pm

i tore mine ...
basically i twisted it one night and thought it was just a 'niggle' so left it thought it would get better which it did, then once every month or so it would kinda flare up and go really really stiff so eventually six months later i decided to go to a sports physio to see if they could massage it back into good health. I must stress I had no idea at all that i had torn it until he said so. went to docs, got refered to hospital for an MRI scan, this was at the start of october and finally got it operated on on christmas eve.
I will be brutally honest with you cos they told me in two weeks it would all be over which is bulls**t and in the months afterwards where it still hurt i wandered whether maybe it hadnt gone right and it was gameover for my sports so its best i tell you my experience then u know what to expect. it took six months before it became unoticable. two weeks u can start bearing weight on it again but you will not get the same degree of flexion as u used to due to the pain. the reason being (i later found out) was that during the operation a very thin layer of skin which coats the bones around a joint becomes damaged and it takes 6 months to a year for it to heal back during which time you get bone rubbing on bone. hope this helps. best of luck!!

Very variable. Some tears can be left as they cause such few problems; others require intervention. MRI is unreliable - only surgery can show. I enjoyed watching my menicsi (intact, fortunately) on large monitors during op.

I've torn both it in both knees. Most recently I had my left knee operated on in March 2010. Unfortunately I only started squatting/deadlifting again in November 2010 because I had continued to try and squat and run with the tear up until the op. I ended up with all sort of problems with a wasted left leg and a right leg that didn't fully straighten fully with muscle problems.

If you do continue to use it. Do it sensibly! I didn't and I still have problems with my right leg (and a f**ked up squat where I still lean slightly to my right)

Do you have a road bike? Get some miles in before and after the op, it will really help!

Thanks for all the info guys. I have seen two other people today and had mixed news. As said above I was told that the severity of tears varies greatly and there is a chance that it will heal alone wihtout surgery, and even a chance that the tear is very small and the pain and lack of movement is due to muscle/soft tissue trauma.

I currently can't fully extend my leg and it hurts like hell during external rotation. So on crutches and trying to keep as much weight off it as possible.

I have been put forward to see a knee specialist in a few weeks but I hope to be up and back to normal (minus lower body training) by then anyway.

Next stop, learn how to bench without one leg in time for bodypower Happy

Martin - On what is the diagnosis based? There are so many things that can go wrong with knees (and so many 'false positives' for meniscus tears) that the symptoms alone reveal very little. Even pretty significant tears can be painless - really just irritating through clicking/popping/occasional locking. Manipulation and MRI can only give indications at best, even for experienced practitioners.

If it *is* a tear, chances of self-healing really aren't great - and age isn't on your side for this kind of resolution (or attempts at repair which don't involve some degree of excision).
