Reflection on yesterday... I didn't realise until I read Joni's post and watched the first 191 fail again that I'd hit the left support on the way up. That explains a lot. I got it past my normal sticking point and once I do that I can normally lock it. So really I just need to get further down the bench! If only everything in life was that simple!

Tonight's workout... It was supposed to be an exploratory session to see what I can do with one purple band, but it turned into one of the hardest bench workouts I've had in ages. I've a deep doms sensation in my arms that I don't remember ever having before, and it kicked in before I even left the gym.

All weights are plus one purple, which I reckon adds about 35 kilos at the top.

Bar for 10
40 for 5
60 for 5
70 for 5
80 for 5
90 for 5
100 for 5
110 for 5
120 for 5 (indescribably hard)
110 for 5
100 for 5
90 for 5
80 for 5
70 for 5

5 sets of facepulls and that was it. Stayed to do a bit of coaching with a few lads who were interested in the bands and to spot Dave Littler. He got the 130 he missed yesterday - after five heavy threes as well - Sod's law.

Everything is now geared towards 192.5 in Czech Republic, which will be followed by a well deserved restful December.

I think you would have on the second attempt if you'd got that far, too. You were pressing straight underneath the bar hook.

I'll blame the bench, then! Don't think I'd have got the third attempt with a forklift I was that shattered. Yet tonight I felt really strong in the gym. Nuts!

yes mate, you see suprisingly well what is going on when you have the front of the front row seats Grin

you were not the only one though, quite a few went to the pins with their presses. Dont know if the bench was in a position which encouraged staying high, or what?

Thanks, mate. The Czech Republic is the EPF European Masters Bench. The really interesting set up is 2 purples close and a black mini wide each side. A lad in the gym tonight did that plus 30 a side on the bar. I tried it and couldn't move it, but it was 20 minutes after I had finished my sets and my arms were just fried.

I'm going to be using one purple on my ME days. That gives "real" weight on the bar as well as some lockout focus. On DE days I'm using two purples and doing 10 sets of 3 - hopefully with an 80 kilo bar. That will allow me to fire it off the chest fast and murder the lock out at the top.

Do you prefer them over chains then Martin, because you've used them at Catt's haven't you?

Only one man's opinion, of course, but that opinion is that bands are vastly superior to chains. With chains you have only a single resistance curve (unless you use more than one set simultaneously) and they're not particularly portable if you train in more than one gym. You can set up bands to work any point in the stroke. For example, in yesterday's workout I did a set of 5 with 120 plus one band and that works more or less the whole movement - you still have to work to get 120 off the chest and you get the equivalent of 155ish at the top. You can also set up two bands and two minis with a 40 kilo bar and most gym goers couldn't move it. Or, and here's the beauty of bands, ANYTHING IN BETWEEN THESE TWO EXTREMES.

Plus you get the "accelerated gravity" effect with bands. Simplistically, on the down stroke the bands try to catapault the bar back to your chest, and working to prevent that happening gives you something similar (but not the same) as a negative rep. Whereas with chains the bar just gets lighter.

And the bands weigh next to nothing and fit easily into a gym bag. I'll have to take them over to Adders one day and you can all try them out and judge for yourself.

Cool, we have bands actually I've used them quite a lot just wanted to see what you thought about the chains.

Ok. Do you have normals and minis? Should've added for the benefit of anyone who doesn't know that bands are primarily an aid to equipped benching, not raw. Not to say the occasional band session is a bad thing for a raw lifter, of course.

We have mini-bands through to the green band which is just ridiculous tension - holding that thing at lockout was so hard. I agree they're designed better for the shirt but certainly beneficial to bringing up the triceps and speed for a raw lifter.

Today's workout. Felt really flat/sluggish and sickly.

5 sets of lat pulldowns
5 sets of seated t-bar rows
4 sets of machine side delt raises
a pathetic attempt at hammer curls
35 minutes cv - NEW OUTPUT PB - 581 calories. Sweated like a reporter with a gold leotard fetish but managed to keep going.

Bench tomorrow and if I don't feel any better I'll rest up until Monday.

But more important than any of that, the missing link arrived today...
