I do it for the challenge. Endurance sports used to be my thing, I started competing in Triathlon in 1989 and I was in the National squad by 1991, so it's frustrating to be so s**t and have no natural ability for Powerlifting but I got a real buzz from doing my first comp in 2008 and it will be worth it when I hit my targets, frustrating sometimes when progress is slow though!!!!!!

Started training at around 15-16, wanted to be a unit. Both my parents were prison officers so I started off going to family nights at the prison gym, benching the bar with just wooden discs on the end for weight.

Have lifted weights but not seriously ever since and got into strength training last year as I thought it would make my legs and back get a lot bigger, which it has. Will be competing this year as I think I am of at least an okay standard for a first timer, enough to have a go and not show myself up anyway!

I like Willsan wanted to be Arnie when I was a kid! But in my teens I started doing gymnastics. Awesome sport for all round fitness and strength. Maybe how oly lifting produces strong legs gymnastic develops good upper body strength (might explain the bench?). Anyway went to College to do sports science and a tutor there got me into powerlifting after asking me to join him for a few weight session. Just got hooked!!! 10yrs later Im still doing it Happy

My older brother started lifting weights at the gym with his mate and like any good younger brother I copied him after I realised I was weaker than a kitten I thought I better stick to it.

Then my brother got into powerlifting and once again like a good younger brother I copied him. After doing my first comp (BWLA NW 2008) I knew for sure this was the sport for me. Happy

Now I keep going because I love training and competing. Happy

I initially hit the gym to try and get a bit stronger for hockey, I then found that I rather liked lifting weights and watched a few videos of PL on youtube, decided I liked the look of it and competed within a month of starting going to the gym.

Two reasons. Watching WSM as a kid and secondly growing up looking at my old man whose a strong geezer.

I remember once looking at him when I was a kid, lift a bath tub on his shoulder thinking wow, I want to be as strong as him when I'm older. However, found out that that bath tub was plastic when I was older.

Confidence one for me. Seriously bullied all the way through Primary School and into Secondary School. Couldn't take it anymore. Started lifting, got stronger and bigger. Smacked a kid just once. Never got picked on again. But of course all the other reasons kicked in after I had got over the bullying problem.
