One important thing to remember is that the recommended figures quoted refer to lean bodyweight not total bodyweight. My lean weight is probably no more than 75k but I often consume up to 300g of protein. I do this because I am trying to gain muscle but I also think it helps with recovery from hard training.

aye dont forget that majority of these muscle comics revenue come from supplement companies and what ever makes folk buy their crap more, they will print it.

Thats why you never hear any real voices from the other side.

What matt said sounds solid to me, though i dont drink guiness.

company reps write articles in order to promote their products, large corporations own huge ranges of companies, from publishers to supplement companies etc. Pseudoscience is everywhere...I recently did a college report on this kind of mis-reporting - Newcastle University found organic fruit and veg. to have up to 40% more antioxidants in them, and so were better for you. The head guy of the Newcastle University organic farming project is also a director of tescos, who were promoting their organic range at the time. As well as all this, too many antioxidants are now being found to be as bad as none at all...so the claims made are simply a load of advertising bulls**t.

A while back, before I got into powerlfting, I tried massive amounts of protein daily. I have to say that I gained body mass quickly. My strength went up too. However, after discussion and debate with Paul R on here, I now think that it's difficult to say whether the results were due to (a) the increased protein or (b) the increased calories from protein (I might have got the same results from scarfing down carbs)or (c) retaining water.

I've cut back on protein intake since I was training for size and it doesn't seem to have affected my strength. I always get some whey + carbs down me after a workout, but apart from that, I'm relaxed about it.

This crazy f**ker I know. Used to eat double what I ate and had 10 protein shakes a day or so he said. I Said to him I considered this a waste of time and money and that his liver was going to be over taxed and he must never stop s**tting. He said he didn't care if he was sat in the s**thouse half the day so long as he got enough protein!Grin Roll-Eyes

bet i mind change after some whey protein ring sting.

after reading all the replies here i think anybody who starts weight training should just eat plenty and clean if there planning to do powerlifting or strongman. and if bodybuilding is there objective then a more structured diet would have to be considered.

Before I would add any protein I would make sure I add more veg to my food. This is where I think most guys go wrong, and as you've already said it's because the marketing focus is selling cheap protein for a big profit. Not so much profit to be made from veg I guess.

No matter how much protein you keep adding you are not going to be able to achieve anything with it apart from using it as energy, if you don't have all the other nutrients covered that helps with "binding up" the protein. Carbs and fats are better energy sources if that's the goal.

Guys, remember that there are 2.2lbs in 1kg, so 1g per lb is almost the same as 2g per kg...

Iain made a good point a while back saying that the body cant be in a muscle building state all the time, else everyone would be huge.

I guess by not having enough you are limiting progress however having more than what is required by the body wont produce more progress.
