Tuesday 17th July, Moss Side (am)
Getting out of bed f, f, f, f, 1.
Swimming 25 lengths, backstroke back, mostly breastroke out.
First time I've swum in 16, maybe 17 years. At the end of 10 lengths, I thought I was running out of steam, but it got easier from there. I was pausing briefly at the ends, mind .
I can still remember the backstroke, breaststroke somewhat less so. Front crawl not at all; the part of my brain used to synchronise breathing has atrophied. Still, I didn't drown. Some distance away from my old gold lifesaving award and five mile certificate, though...

I could swim before I could walk, actually. My family always did a lot of sailing, so all of us were taught to swim early and thoroughly .
Swimming in the ocean kicks the s**t out of pools, though. I have fond memories of swimming circles around the boat in the middle of the bay of Biscay .

Swimming has got to be one of the best types of cardio its actually enjoyable. I know what you mean about swimming in the sea, i was doing it in oz last year in choppy conditions and when i got out i felt like id been beaten up
Rick iv got questions about your coan bench program, how good have you found it? what kind of strength increases might i expect? Do you bench once or twice a week with it?
Cheers

Last year I started swimming again after about 5 years of not swimming, I found I'd lost the ability to hold my breath under water..

For Baz:
The hardest question is what kind of increases you might expect. In your case, iirc, you've done very little in the way of low-rep and singles work on the bench, so you should get rather a lot from what ends up as a peaking routine. The first time I did it, I went from 130 being an iffy attempt, missed it as often as I made it, to a 135 double on a day I was sick. I like it a lot.
You have one main bench day a week (total of six working sets over three exercises), and do two light sets of ten on a second day. Coan presses overhead on a third day; I've been doing that on the light bench day. In fact at the moment I pretty much have a two days upper, two days lower split, though I didn't intend that as such when I planned the routine.

Wednesday 18th July, Sugden
Coan bench, week 5.
Bench 20x8, 60x5, 80x3 (all paused), 100x1, 110x5x2 (first reps paused).
These were a bit all over the place, mostly I think because of the fat bar.
Close-grip Bench 100x5x2 (paused firsts). Easier.
Incline Bench 60x5, 92.5x5x2 (paused firsts). Very easy indeed.
Wide seated row 84x8, stack x10x2. Still nice and strict.
Narrow pulldowns 98x18x2. Not half bad.
Another decent session - and another reasonably quick one. Apart from the hovering bicep tendonitis and the sore knee, I'm rather happy with things at the moment.

I wish I could swim well. I mean I can swim, but I've always seemed to suffer with a negative buoyancy and spend as much of my time swimming upwards as I do swimming forwards. By the time I've done one length I'm knackered. I basically find swimming anaerobic!

I find it exactly the same neil. I used to be really floaty cause i was really fat with no real tone. Now i just sink like a rock. Kills my rear delts and lats. Rick20/07/07 @ 11:14
Thursday 19th July, Sugden, pm
Deadlift 60x5x2, 100x3, 140x2, 160x1, 170x1, 180x2x3.
Nice and solid and easyish, but not as much of a joke as they probably ought to be. Gonna push deads a little harder on the squat-free sessions from here on.
Friday 20th July, Moss Side, am
Swimming 35 lengths. Continuous except for pauses to find an empty lane to swim in (difficult since they accidentally started the absolute beginners class early. It's tough swimming lengths backstroke when there's a 60-year-old with a float blundering about trying to do *widths*).
Well pleased with this. I was going to do three nines and an eight, then as I got towards nine I thought, ah, two twelves and an eleven, and so on... never felt any need to rest.

Saturday 21st July, Sugden
Shoulders, Bench assistance, lats.
Standing Press 20x8, 40x5, 60x5, 70x3, 75x4 PB, 2, 0.
The 60s were great, the 70s rancid, the first set with 75 OK apart from greying out from lack of oxygen, and the rest poor. I'm stronger than this; we'll probably stay at 75 next week and try to get it right.
Bench 20x8, 60x5, 90x10x2. Got some ok speed today.
Narrow seated row 84x8, stack x10x2.
Wide pulldowns 98x8x2.
Not bad, not great. Knees feel good today, though (especially given that I spent 3+ hours in a seat at the Apollo last night!).
