Why not just not get fat in the first place?

Maybe that is due to the distance travelled decreasing as you get heavier in both squat and bench but not so in deadlift.

I can't see how another stone or two of functional muscle can make anyones deadlift go backwards though. Maybe a stone or two of belly might though...

Yeah I was going to say, extra weight just means the bar doesn't have to move as far on bench press! Bit like a board press....belly press? Some cheeky implants could reduce the ROM even further...

Yeah, that'd do the trick. I bet she'd have a great bench, so long as she could hold her breath long enough to make the lift. Breathing with those badboys must be pretty hard if you lying on your back.

17 stone and 5ft 6. yep i'm morbidly obese.

I think without my belly getting in the way when I was 11 stone deadlifting felt more comfortable but I am a lot stronger than when I was 11 stone. Swings and roundabouts with this one I think.

Interesting study, but it doesn't factor in the skill/speed/technique requirements of weightlifting. I can't see the same conclusions being drawn if the sample being studied was strongman-based (other than the biggest and tallest won't necessarily win).

I dropped (a little) weight (last year) and managed to increase my deadlift, the other 2 lifts stayed the same

I think it just assumes they all had solid technique since they were world champions Tongue

But yes, it's limited, I would like to see such a study done on say, just the squat or deadlift. There probably is one to be honest, I only read medical journals not sports ones.

squat and bench - being bigger generally implies bigger lifts.

deadlift - much more of a body mechanics dependent movement, so if your hands are small and arms short then you'll always struggle with this lift no matter how much muscle/fat you pack on.

its swings and roundabouts.

When i was 6 foot 7 i found pressing a struggle. I thought it would affect my deadlift, but its been consistantly s**t.

I then decided to give 5ft3 a try, sure, it did help with pressing, but shopping in supermarkets became a chore.
